It kind of makes sense. If this thing stumbled upon a rock on Mars while running, it would just make a never before seen twist and stand back up in a matter of second. Old Atlas would just fall down and he would likely have trouble getting back up. The only bad thing about the new robot is that it looks like Trevor Henderson's Siren Head monster possessed by yet another even stronger demon that took over its body.
@mkhopper
14 күн бұрын
I have been saying this for years. I'll never understand why robots are made to mimic humans, with two arms, two legs, head, torso, etc. That automatically gives them the same disadvantages that humans have. With this model however, it looks like the engineers are finally seeing past that flaw by giving the unit these dynamic joints.

This might be unsettling but it's great marketing as well. They’ve put years into making this model, they probably have stress tested just like the older Atlas model to some degree. It’s just only now we get to see it. They probably will show stress tests of it shortly knowing how they like to show their progress. I’m just intrigued by how slim it is and how humanoid it is. By far this is the most advanced robot I’ve ever seen in a real world scenario. I mean just look at how fast it walks, and knowing the older Atlas this thing can probably run and do parkour. Also the hand style on it is similar to the Atlas grippers from the very last few that we’re using them in a demo to move loaded strut springs. I’m quite sure it’s strong.

OK, but all jokes aside this is absolutely one of the most technically astounding humanoid robots. The absolute technical mastery for it too stand up like that while maintaining balance and not falling over is next level engineering and programming. People may be able to successfully replicate their little dog bots but this is something entirely different. I’m curious to see its agility and capacity for maintaining balance.

@@variancewithin Well, I mean, given that the institute was literally located _directly_ under the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Boston Dynamics is in fact a spin off of MIT itself, you are in no way wrong about the connection. I think that may in fact be _the point._ At least in regards to the institute, I don't think our iteration of MIT/BD is anything like vault-tec.
