Forward insights.
We don’t value musicians in this culture. That’s across the board. My daughter has a doctorate in bassoon performance. She teaches at 3 universities, several high schools and middle schools. She’s waiting tables during the summer so that she can afford to teach the rest of the year. Classical music has been undervalued for decades. I hate not having copies of albums these days. I should self correct.

That's because we don't value music in this society. Everything (especially music) has become commodified.

Spotify is going out like Blockbuster if they don’t switch their entire model and start paying artists. Either artists will go directly to consumer or a new platform will come!

You said it, Mr King. You was the first one reallly publicly saying you were going direct to consumer. I think we’re entering a stage where in a couple of years the streaming things will slowly become a novelty rather than the standard. Real musicians and real music fans have been pushing for this for a long time.
I’m in my 30s now and still kinda bummed about that MySpace thing. 😩😔 All of my first beats from 10th grade, gone. Physical is really where it’s at. 💯

Integrity is hard to find these days. Salute to you for having it and showing everyone how its done. Thank you.
I remember buying cds. It was just something about buying a new cd. Pulling out the booklet. Looking at the pictures. Reading the credits. One of the things I loved was looking up the samples of a song and going back and buying the original songs. So I had just as much old school r&b as rap music. Infact that was my favorite part of listening to rap. It introduced me to all kinds of music just from the sample. When they started the music streaming service I as a consumer refuse to comply. I said I'm not "renting" music. I rather buy and own it and listen when ever I want. Then the digital music I bought and thought I owned is now gone because Amazon decided to become a streaming service. This is why I refuse to buy anymore digital copies PERIOD! Over $1000 worth of digital music GONE! NEVER AGAIN!!

#Facts These streaming services are having folks "rent" music. It's crazy. With my new mixtape I did something different by putting it on EVEN instead of Spotify. I sold a few copies and made $70, equivalent to 20,000 streams on Spotify. Smh
I agree next time Im at Barnes and Nobles I'll just buy the CD. Or Vynal plus I love the connection from the artist like baby pics or song written on napkins and artisitc approach on there design for there album cover.
Kanye - DONDA 2 was straight to consumer back in 2022. It’s still not on streaming. Sway in the morning actually came up with it. Kanye said in 2022 Sway was right when he told Kanye back in 2013 that he should sell directly to the people. “How sway” was actually just self doubt. Plus I’m pretty sure mtv music is archived like every old site .

Physical copies are incredibly important to me. I don’t buy digital I’ll buy both if it comes down to it but I learned my lesson years ago w digital when my sons PS4 broke down and they said “oh sorry all those $80 games you purchased digitally are unrecoverable… our bad!” I’ve never purchased digital again on anything… music, computer games, movies, books ect. Then a month later they wiped my books from Amazon because the authors put out new cover art lol… Therefore they were considered new releases and I’d have to repurchase them… ridiculous! They will do anything to screw over their customers so they make more purchases. They count on you not realizing what is going on and second guessing yourself so you don’t call them out on their bad business practices. Physical is the way to go. I love your message/content. I wish more people were honest like this. Wishing you continued success!
You are on point bro! This is a great post coming a real man!
Why wouldn't an artist that has a decent following just have their own website where they stream their own songs? They should get enough traffic that advertisers pay them for space. They will probably make just as much or more than they do keeping it on Spotify.

I still have all of my families vinyl records and Albums dating back to1965; I also have quite a few CD's....I have very little downloaded music, and what I do have is burned onto a CD...I also have very few downloaded books...I've always liked my music and reading materials to be physical/hard copies...Because I knew more 20 years ago that anything digital could be deleted or wiped clean...I read in all genres and some of the oldest books I have now cost 5k and up for a physical copy...Why?.. Because they are no longer in print and will not be reprinted...That tells me everything I need to know....

Hey Curtis not sure if you’re gonna see this but I watched a video last week where you spoke about Tik-tok and how Universal was going to wage a war with Tik-tok over licensing. I wanted to respond back to that I disagree. I believe they are all working about I received backlash from Tik-tok after criticizing RCA Records. I’m no longer utilizing Tik-tok and now returning to KZread. All of my videos were censored after I did multiple reviews on how horrible the current G-Eazy album was and I believe you should do a second video that does a deep dive reexamination of censorship and how Tik-tok and the Majors are STILL working together.
Curtiss, i LOVE your shirt!!!!
When people actually have to buy music again, that may inspire cutting down or consuming the bull crap because I bet there’s a lot of stuff that people have a nurse streaming library that they would never pay for
These consumers will never feel the feeling of going to a record store and picking up that cassette tape. Read it from front to back. Or even finally getting that album rading the lyrics on the bus waiting to get back home to listen to the album.
Late Steve Albini believed in recording to analog tape and have analog tape masters is the only way to preserve music long term.
What is ya vocal chain now? shit sounds amazing
I’m conflicted with this topic because while I agree that streaming services have been a major issues when it comes to paying the artists for their artistry but I look at it as they help get your music out to those that can’t get to physical media. I really think both should be promoted evenly across both streaming services and physical media but I think that’s the responsibility of record companies or DIYers like yourself. I respect both hustles but fully agree that artists get screwed by all distributors besides themselves IMO. 🤷🏾👍🏾💯🔥
Funny thing is, the music is generating money, less of it goes to the artist as the music industry gets more controlled by non-musicians or people who only care about a bottom line
He flexin like a MUG😂💯
Okay, this is in hindsight. Time has given us, time to see how this would play out. Initially, we, in general, had little to no idea the repercussions of how damaging streaming would become to the musicians. There is no way an artist should be getting pennies for their blood, sweat and tears, and we on the tail end, the consumers and the streaming channels benefitting greatly, at their expense. I would have no problem going direct to consumer, if the musician could keep more money in their pockets. I also believe the artist, and those consumers that care, if they are in a position to do so, should ban together, to right this wrong, and address this. If you pull your music, what do they have to stream? Or am I missing the point of commercial streaming? What is it giving, other than profit for the streaming companies, and convenience to the consumer, that makes it the only choice? Why does it have to be the only choice? Musician should begin to exercise sovereignty and begin to distribute their own music, or definitely look for more options that make this more equitable for them. There should be a win/win situation for the streaming service and the musician. And it just doesn't seem to be. Musicians, I'm with you if you want to do different, to help level this playing field.
How can we go back to the original way of buying records CDs and get rid of screaming? We are already integrated into the System. I understand what you're saying what is the blueprint for everybody to get on board sir If we decide To go back And distributor Are music in the store we will need a better way. I hope you understand.
🎬
We should just do scoring for movies or dj...
I love live performances with real musicians, you can’t fake that. It’s a meter for quality.
Bro I need to go practice my shots at the gym

You can’t change the consumer’s behavior by giving worst, uncomfortable and more expensive conditions it’s totally unattractive, it’s nonsense , they forgot they went viral thanks to the streaming services, keep going that way people eventually will forget about them and somebody else will replace them, we are not even talking about big stars, the music world has changed, nobody has a real hit nowadays. You must be fast and be everywhere. It is even low Iq trying to go direct to consumer and not even touching the counterfeit risk.
nah that sink different i ain’t never seen that before😂
This hit me hard 😢 all that content gone no way
I miss buying albums and I’m barely 30.
Why that man waste all that fresh water foe😮
It isn’t just about payouts. Billboard rankings are based on the numbers from those platforms. That turns into promotion, advertisement and sales.
I can't live without music and only listen on Tidal. I hope Erykah and Lauryn are making bank off of my superfandom. I still buy CDs, last CD I got was Late Graduation.
I think he meant they stopped paying the domain name for the information to be released to the public. But the files still exist
I responded to his post this: "I honestly feel like all artist should focus on selling physical copies again. I still buy CD's of albums that I love to this day because of Apple getting rid of the itunes music/store and Blackground Records for not putting their music on streaming until recently.

I remember having all my original cds in the early 2000s man, that was the vibe. And you would think the streaming would pay them more because it's not the physical overhead... that's crazy but I'm here for it
What if the new norm was distributing a piece of work in the format of a ep. Then in the real world we have the physical copies with links to the attached with the E.p
This is what I say you ahead of ya time Curtis king you said this months ago and caught a lot bs for it. Just remember the first ain’t the first they are the original fam.

Rick Beato's lost his damn mind. Oh you mean back when record labels had all the control STILL ripping off the artist? I buy the record at a bands live show now plus merch and I usually leave a big tip. Not even for the music but for the physical copy with the bands artwork. He thinks no one buys records whatsoever and why is he all the sudden in his gym. Flexing them sinks and gyms.

so what should I just give up on releasing music and becoming a successful artist right now ??
20 times a day for a year ?!?
I must say tho curt! Kanye west been on this too and even sold those stem players with one of his previous releases….nipsey was also heavily on this ….your only angle here is that you didn’t wanna do it in conjunction with streaming you just pulled your music to make a statement….why not do both if ur fans are already paying for subscriptions…? Ween them off bro don’t cut them off…

Everyone should quit stuff em

25$ for about 7k streams? What do you think you´ll get when it´s played on radio with 7k listeners? Right - close to zero! Spotify as a company is a bad player. Streaming as a technology is not IMO.

Dude you wasn't the first
Well he is not an independent Artist, the Label is eating his money, I had made $30,000 from Just 15m streams, good money
0:12-0:21, That quote from @even_biz, *Curtis, you're an independent artist. Is this b.s. true for artists signed to major record labels or is it true for EVERY artist all aross the board indie or mainstream?*
Don't think is about lazy, in the sink dude analogy small artists would live in dark alley clubs that 50 people knew and since beginning of music as entertainment business coorporations or record labels had a say. Musicians keep saying "Is about the music" awesome dude, thats why NAPSTER was created, more people around the world could LISTEN to your song, great right? No. Because labels and artists without the commercialisation of music cannot profit. And is not about music, 100000000 songs could be made a day with A.I, are you going to pay the A.I even if it is a really good song? No, it does not matter, someone will make money for it. You yuys are so fkd up that yes, music still require a human to make it. Most of the times, time and energy. Should be about money? Shouldn't? In a perfect world, no. But in a pwrfect world you wouldn't be paying to drink water, which is a free resource. It could go to your house, or you could fetch for free, like it should. The ideia shouldnt even be questioned, if music is a medicine for the soul, yeah pay up. Felling good has to have a price.
