Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes Review - Overpriced & Tone Deaf

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a really awesome opening mission that isn't worth its price of admission.

    I haven't played GZ but from the videos I've seen from the opening it really does look incredible. The opening of TTP, a game I finally got around to playing last year, really caught me WAY the fuck off guard. While I understand why not everyone liked it, I was blown away. The presentation was off the charts, the acting incredible, and the pacing was perfect as the escalation dialed with a surprise twist. First-time players unaware of the plot is lulled into tutorial mode while a doctor asks if "Snake" can look in normal or inverted. The game lets the doctor explain why Shrapnel Man (nickname I'm sure used outside his presence) grew a forehead extension while the player follows along in a relaxed state for a few more moments until being shocked out of as the game kicks in with horrific shit in what might be the most flashy tutorial in history. It had a huge impact on me that kept me thinking back on it for a few weeks or so. I'll never forget it, that's for sure.

    Camp Omega is a better open-world sandbox than Phantom Pain's Africa and Afghanistan. I never get bored of starting up Ground Zeroes and messing around in Camp Omega. I played Phantom Pain once, and never went back. Ground Zeroes has me coming back every few months for hours and hours of fun. Whether I feel like playing a stealth game, or shooter game, I can do either. I can even switch between the two genres seamlessly mid-mission by abandoning my tranq gun and driving a tank and Ground Zeroes just lets me do it. The perfect example of Quality > Quantity.

  • @jackhamm760

    @jackhamm760

    You can literally do all of that in TPP too and usually get more variety from the bad guys doing so too. Camp Omega has less variety taking place within its walls than OKB Zero does. And in both missions, tranq or tank are equally viable paths. So the quality vs quantity argument doesn't hold water if everything that made Camp Omega work applies to the outposts within Afghanistan and Africa.

    I hear your criticisms. But I will say that, yeah, the first mission took less than an hour my first time through. But then doing everything that I felt was fun to do with the game took me just over 16 hours, and that got me to 80% complete/95% PS4 Trophies. Then another 8.5 hours to fully complete it 100%/100%. Yeah, the last 8.5 weren't as fun as the previous 16 hours, but it was still engaging enough to keep me coming back to do it. As a prologue chapter, I thought it was a really fun time on a pretty cool map. TPP so far has been a lot more boring overall compared to GZ. But also, I got the Definitive Collection for like $4 last year, so I'm not as put off by its initial price tag.

    @@Janon743 Oh, I did. I 100%/100%'d that one too. Comparing the two experiences though, GZ vs TPP, GZ is a really tight fun experience. TPP is very bloated, but the gameplay and controls were definitely way more refined than they were in GZ. Took me like a week to fully complete GZ, but took me 2-3 months to fully complete TPP. Both are amazing games imho though. I definitely feel that I got my money's worth with them.

    Another excellent review! Once again, I love the way your perspective always manages to feel unique for games that are now several years old. My favorite being the bit about building intrigue and how much brevity exists throughout the cutscenes and dialogue. The editing is terrific, the audio levels are MUCH better than last time. And all of the Skull Face commercials had me in stitches. 'XD TBH, I agree 150% on the subject of the taboo being mishandled myself. I've said it a number of times that there are right ways to handle uncomfortable subjects and imagery in a series that isn't known for having that kind of imagery, and there are wrong ways. GZ's approach was the latter. In a different IP, that wouldn't be a big deal, but in a game where you play as a bloke called "Big Boss," it feels out of left field and needlessly gruesome. I would probably still rate GZ higher, if only because even the best games don't get replayed as much as GZ, but it IS my least favorite MGS game by far. It doesn't feel like Metal Gear at all, and being controversial isn't the same as being mature. So I think I agree with you a LOT more here than I did with PW or MGS4. Now, I'm VERY eager to see what your TPP review will look like. Keep up the fantastic work! :D

    I agree with most of what you said but in regards to the "tone deafness" I have some issues. I don't see why intense violence always needs a plot justification. The bomb removal scene is here to set the tone, to portray the ruthlessness of the world that this game is set in. Yes I know the previous games where very silly but it's not fair to sin this game for what past games did. I prefer to look at the MGSV experience as it's own unique identity that happens to fall within the MGS cannon. Kojima wanted to make this type of game, perhaps MGSV being a brand new IP would have eliminated these problems but as long as you just ignore the rest of the series silliness and treat the game for what it is, GZ itself is actually consistent in tone. No cyborg ninjas and cartoony voices etc but the dreary nature of war all throughput the game. Now TPP does reintroduce weird shit again but damn do I think it's handled a lot better but that'd be a topic for another day. Having said all that, there actually is a story purpose for this scene: the PTSD side plot for Venom in The Phantom Pain. Not only did he fail to find the other bomb but he also experienced the brutality of it all which is more than enough to fuck ones brain up pretty bad. While the actual side missions surrounding the that side-plot in TTP are repetitive BS, the Paz hallucinations are some of the best moments in TTP and this scene sets that up.

    I've actually been asked this a few times before. It's difficult to explain without seeming like I'm cherrypicking, but I'll do my best. The first and most obvious note is that, unfortunately, Ground Zeroes *is* an MGS game. In contrast to say, Batman, or a comic book series that's spanned decades and had hundreds of different writers and artists at the helms for all manner of disconnected storylines, MGS is a singular IP that for twenty eight years, was written by the same guy, with help from a few others on the side. But ultimately, the tone, the world, it's all been the same established, goofy universe. MGS was not now or ever a dark, gritty world. It was certainly dark and dealt with a lot of real world issues, but the world itself was B-movie schlock. So for GZ to be a part of this world yet feel so gritty and ugly is jarring in and of itself. But more so than that is the fact that GZ *is* still inherently silly. This is a game where you play as a guy with a mullet and an eyepatch who calls himself "Big Boss." The main villain is a paramilitary commander who looks like a zombie and dresses like a cowboy. That is inherently silly and fitting with the world of MGS. But then, the zombie cowboy does all this over the top, terrible stuff to people, like real, Fincher-esque nightmare fuel. There's no sense of ownership or tone here. A game being an MGS game means, by default, one expects a giant nuclear robot to emerge down the line as well. And giant nuclear robots, as with everything else in MGS, are goofy. They fit with mullet men in eyepatches and zombie cowboys, not excessively graphic gore or subjecting listeners to rape. That's why, if you're in a series not renown for *any* of this, then there needs to be an actual reason to actually subject players to this sort of thing. And at least thus far, none of the reasons I've ever heard have held up under scrutiny. For example, I've heard many say that the surgery and the rape establish a brutal tone. But then, so does literally everything else GZ does. The atmosphere, the way POW's all have bolts in their ankles, the way you can witness prisoners being executed, the overall conditions of the place, and the tapes themselves all do a great job of showcasing just what sort of hell Camp Omega is. So the rest just ends up becoming redundant and excessive, and does so without any payoff. Similarly, for Kiefersnake's trauma in V, there's nothing really suggesting that ripping Paz open was any more traumatic than the mere fact that he failed to save her and failed to prevent that bomb from going off in the first place. It's the catalyst that essentially ruined his life and changed everything forever. After all, he's a medic who has likely seen all sorts of horrible things in his time, and he's actually older than Big Boss by a few years, so experience wouldn't play a role either. There's nothing that indicates *necessity* and unfortunately, when dealing with a very specific and particular series, you do ultimately need a reason to go with such a drastic tone shift. Like I said in the video, you can go dark but still have a sense of identity. The problem is that establishing identity is next to impossible when GZ is so criminally brief. Had this game possessed an actual three-act storyline where we see these characters within an actual journey, then it's possible the tone could've been established in a way that GZ still feels like an MGS game the way V does despite itself. But as is, with how short the disc is, the end result just feels like a snippet of something that just doesn't resemble MGS. *If* it didn't have Metal Gear in the title, if the protagonist wasn't Big Boss and if the main villain didn't dress like a cowboy or call himself "Skull Face," then this would all be par the course. But unfortunately, IP does matter, because with that IP comes a consistent tone, world and expectancy. And trying to do all the dark and dirty stuff just doesn't jive with zombies in ten gallon hats and a Snake Plisskin-esque character voiced by Jack Bauer. Hopefully this term paper makes some degree of sense lol.

I din't play GZ, but I did see various bits revealing him that just left me with an uneasy first impression that lasted until I finally played TTP. Ya ever get that feelin' where it's as if an individual you only just laid eyes on is somehow threatening, or as though there were something about their demeanor that feels off-putting? Well, I've had many gut feelings in my time but never did I think a fellow human had meant to bring harm upon me and mine after a mere look of their general appearance! Good video but I disagree with the part of this review regarding the storyline and it seems as if you’ve missed some vital parts of the storyline that may alleviate some of your personal issues. For instance; Paz actually does have an entire subplot in the game which is wrapped up pretty neatly all things considered. The only issue is that you have to go to the medical bay to trigger a cutscene in order to progress this storyline. Biggest issue with MGSV and GZ as a whole for me is the fact that too much of the story is hidden away behind cassette tapes and optional cutscenes. That’s the true mistake of the final games imo.

    The two scenes you mention are still absolutely horrific and tone deaf even 8 years after release. (The same goes for lots of Quiet's scenes in V -- especially the attempted rape.) I don't know what Kojima was thinking. It strides into fetishistic gore territory (it was actually even censored in Japan). For what reason? Why go so dark if there isn't a point. ("Bad man is reaaaally bad" is not a valid reason -- that's how a 12 year old thinks. It's straight up poor writing: ANYONE can write something horrific. It takes no skill whatsoever. Adding layers of depth and meaning is what's hard.)

For all his grandiloquence about the horrors of war you see in the games he totally and absolutely disregards misgyny and sometimes seems to enjoy torturing women. And as a piece of history: Kojima intended to make MGSV an episodic game but this was met with a huge backlash (and rightfully) from the community and he ended up reverting to making a full game in MGSV The Phantom Pain, though remanants of the idea linger in the game: this is why at the start and end of each of the main misions you get to see the credits rolling)

After Kojima dropped the ball on MGS4 big time, and since this was almost 6 or 7 years later, I kind of lost interest in playing later on in the series any further. Everyone I know who's played this, also doesn't like it. I seriously think Kojima should have stopped after MGS3: Snake Eater. The first three games were good. (MGS1, 2 & 3), My ratings. MGS1 - 7/10 MGS2 - 7/10 (Although, there weren't enough boss fights) MGS3 - 8.5/10 And then it was rapidly going downhill after that.. MGS4 - 3/10 (He shouldn't have made this game, and at this point, for me, this is what killed any further interest in the series) I guess it's a good thing, I didn't waste my time on playing MGSV: GZ, and in a way I'm kind of glad the franchise is dead. Its time to move on to something else.

Check his channel's stats in socialblade, his views and subscriber count is still up. Growing a channel is a slow grind, not instantaneous.

    @@uncanny-hector-1906 I believe I originally made that comment at like 2:00 in the morning so I was rather delirious. Plus I really don't care what you think on a stupid metal gear solid post on somebody's failing channel. You win. 😁

    But you cared enough to post a comment on a "failing channel" and reply to me so that means you do care, lmao 🤣
