@@frogglen6350 I liked the very end (the wedding is pure cringe and hack writing) but I wasn't really happy to see any of the old characters back as they were. I can't think of a single character who was enhanced by MGS 4's writing, unless people just like the aesthetic of Raiden (I thought making him Grey Fox was a massive middle finger to MGS 2 fans personally). Geez even characters like Para-Medic get retconned into being villains despite her EXPLICITLY SAYING she was completely against cloning in MGS 3.

This is a great review, and your focus on the War Economy (MIC) aspect of the setting/story, and point about that being the most relevant idea in the entire game, backed up with solid numbers etc, was fantastic, and an avenue of criticism I haven't heard anyone else level so clearly and, politically speaking, bravely, in other critiques of this MGS4. You're making great content, I bet these will start getting a lot more views within the next year.

REALLY great review, mate! The editing is REALLY good here (lost it at the constant cuts to JD 'XD) and you manage to say a lot of interesting talking points I hadn't considered! I think I agree more on this than your MGS3 one but there's still some things I don't fully agree with. The biggest point being the action. I don't think the action is nearly as "toothless" as you think it is, or any worse than MGS2 or MGS3 TBH. Enemies are slow to react but the combination of over the shoulder gunplay and switching to lockon, side jumping away from bullets and shooting back has always been very fun IMHO. Even when you talked about it being too slow, you show a clip of you punching through a bunch of PMC's, getting knocked to the ground and gunning down blokes from the ground. That looked pretty fun to me. :P I also dunno if I fully agree about the cutscenes. Sure, there's WAY too much bloody exposition and I think you make some really good points about Meryl, Raiden, Naomi, FoxDie and Big Boss. But I also don't remember being frustrated or bored when I play through MGS4. I thought it struck a nice balance of character moments with exposition, as well as having a bit more humor than MGS3, which you yourself showcased. I'd probably rate MGS4 higher than you (and certainly didn't seem to hate MGO2 the way you did 'XD) but I think this was a VERY good review! Might be my favorite of all the ones you've done so far! Nice work! Can't wait to see your next one! :D

That’s fair. I know many enjoyed the combat and if you did, good on you. It was harder for me to enjoy when movement was so sluggish and enemies felt so unreactive. Part of why MGS3’s action worked a lot better for me was the immediacy of it. Guards went down much quicker and you could actively run and gun, which made getting outta tight jams feel a lot more satisfying even if gunplay was a bit archaic. Either way, thanks for the thoughtful feedback, dawg!

I've been watching your reviews in reverse order and I expected you to be a lot harsher on mgs4. As someone who has played most of the metal gear games numerous times and mgs4 at least 26 times, I'm agreeing with most of this. One thing you forgot to mention is Big Boss just stood there as Snake was putting the gun in his mouth despite saying he has respect for him and wants him to live the rest of his life in peace. Things I disagree with are the psyche meter and some of the fanservice (key note some). The psyche meter and stress percentage help encourage the player to want to stay stealthy. Being in alert causes stress to go up, and when your stress is high your psyche goes down causing you to have worse aim and chance for Snake to screw up his rolls. In terms of fanservice I feel Act 4 does it well by having a location known to fans become a more decrepit and dreary place with good atmosphere. And the final fight despite breaking from good game design of testing all the players abilities, does fanservice in a way that doesn't seem patronizing and more like a celebration of the series with these 2 old guys beating each other up to the tune of previous games soundtracks while using the health bars of said games. I think there are other instances of good fanservice but to be fair I haven't play the game since I pretty much went pc only which was a while ago so my memory on it isn't the best. I just wanted to mention the ones I do know. With all that said and done, I'm looking forward to watching your other videos.

What a breath of fresh air. Your reviews are far from the usual Supperbunnyhop esque "the first 3 games are holy perfection and all else is literally Satan" nonsense. MGS4 is an incredibly flawed game and so are the rest but darn is it rare to see someone give all the games equally just treatment. Kojima suffers from Tetsuya Nomura's problem: they have good ideas for a story but they aren't writers and they don't allow writers to actually make the stories well structured, adjust the pacing, turning them into something cohesive and intelligible by removing padding, repeated elements and prioritizing relevant messages over others that arent adding anything to what they are really trying to say.

It depends on what matters most to you, the player. I'm a very gameplay-centric individual. The stories for these games do not dictate how much I like or dislike them because I'm not going to be re-watching cutscenes I already know the outcome of. If I'm replaying a game, it's purely for the gameplay. The reason MGS4 underwhelms me is because the gameplay lost me after act 2. Nothing from that point on is remotely as fun for me. I don't enjoy tailing missions. I greatly dislike railshooters. And the lions share of act 4 doesn't feature conventional human guards except during Wolf's boss fight. So, there's nothing that has me hooked to keep playing after Octopus' encounter. Whereas, with V, I enjoy virtually every mission. Unlike MGS4, it remains a consistent stealth action video game from near-start to finish. Most of its missions remain highly open-ended, all mostly taking place in really well designed outposts. And I simply had more fun engaging with enemy soldiers, both in the stealth and combat sequences of V than in 4. That's just me, of course. Consistent game design matters to me. It's why I've always enjoyed the Big Boss games a lot more than the Solid Snake games. They tend to stay stealth action games, whereas the Solid Snake games often dip too heavily in set pieces that I tend not to enjoy.

@@RobertEdwinHouse9 It will ultimately depend on how much stock one puts into the writing of these games. I'm in the minority, but I don't particularly care for the writing in any of those games or any of the ones that came after. I've always maintained that every game has good ideas, great moments, something to say, and memorable characters, but that the collective whole has never lived up to those moments for me. I admire Kojima's commitment to his vision and to having a desire to actually share a message through an interactive medium, but a big part of why I don't think he's especially good at conveying those themes is because so much of his writing is conveyed through characters literally spelling everything out in one-sided exposition dumps. Whatever the message or theme, to me, that will never be good writing because that's the least interesting and least inventive way someone can relay a point. As such, MGS4's story didn't really ruin much of anything for me. I endured it all, it had its moments, but those moments aside, I found it to be mostly hogwash. And that's about how I saw every other games writing, so it's more or less no better or worse than any other game. It has its own unique weaknesses, and its own endearing qualities. The only thing that MGS4 genuinely ruined about MGS2, in my opinion, was the Patriots themselves. Their founders didn't need to be the MGS3 codec team. And their ineptitude during MGS4 with Ocelot taking them for a ride completely undermined the calculating force they were portrayed as in that final call with Computer Colonel. But otherwise, what was relevant about MGS2 still holds up, and makes it interesting to ponder over. But it's still something I feel had better ideas than actual execution.

Writing is showing AND telling. Showing rather than telling works in most cases but it's subjective and doesn't apply to all movies and games, etc. I do agree that MGS4 is somewhat messy from a writing perspective. If it were a movie it'd get more flak.

  • @KeivReviewsThings

    @KeivReviewsThings

Subjective though it may be, one has to consider what audiences respond most positively towards. Typically speaking, the vast majority of people prefer when a story is conveyed with as little exposition as one can manage. If something can be conveyed visually, then it *should* be conveyed visually. Simply talking about a subject isn't interesting for the vast majority of people, especially when these scenes are so one-sided, nor is it doing the point trying to be conveyed justice. There are so many different ways one can explore themes, plot points and everything in between. And those options only grow the more you consider the medium and the role interactivity can play. Writers owe it to both themselves *and* their audiences to convey their plots in the most interesting and creative ways possible. Simply sitting the players down and talking *at* them for several minutes on end, relaying quite a great deal of very dry information all at once simply isn't that. That, too, is merely my subjective point of view, but I would argue it's a point of view that would, in a broader sense, resonate better with audiences, regardless of the medium.

i can see people who was into this series not really liking this game because it covers a lot of stuff that fans already know. but see it from my point of view and others like me. mgs4 was my first ever mg game. this thing felt hand made for me. every time it talked about someone there would be a 5 to 10 min cut scene or audio talking about who this person was what they did what color their eyes are how they like their eggs cooked so i was never lost. had this game just kept moving a long i would have been so lost. like liquid ocelot two bad guys in one that would completely lose anyone new to these games had the cutscenes and talking parts not went over both characters and their back stories. i loved that the game let you play it however you wanted. and even through it was talked up more than it was actually in the game but you could stress snake out so much he would vomit. it only happened once but crazy amount of detail. i felt the game was very well balanced. seemed like for every part of the game that seemed dialog every there would be a big action part or a part that if you wanted to play stealthy took your full concentration. i loved the octocamo. if i had to manually change outfits like mg3 makes you over and over i would have quit the name in anger and frustration all to stay hidden. the replaying part of the mission from mg1 was really cool to me and to go back to it years later and to pilot rex. MAN that was fun. the only thing after i beat the game that i wished they would have added in was let you play as raiden. that robot ninja looked awesome. the irony when i found out how everything hated playing as normal raiden in mg2 was a bit funny. to see a character that everyone hated playing being turned into a character we all wished we could have played as. when i saw the early demos of the raiden game that got canceled i was pissed. then saw it was coming out but they changed everything i hated. the early demos of slicing a bad guy into 100 pieces while in slow mo was epic. sad to see it get turned into what it became. raiden is clearly a cursed character. but anyone if you never played any metal gear game and you are reading this mgs4 you won’t be disappointed. it will definitely make you want to play more. the irony is is player this then V and all the others. what a weird experience..

Hell i rarely even after my 12th playthrough did i even use the syringe in MGS4 i instead just used the cardboard box and stayed in the shadows to lower his stress, and there are songs in both mgs3 and 4 that increase stamina and psyche. You'd have to play like an absolute moron to be so bothered by those mechanics. But you are right about the enemies being less of a threat as the series progress. Even in MGS5 i've found that most enemies while they are more capable of hittin you from afar, they just aren't that smart anymore, they are too slow to clear an area, and don't even react to an empty gun having its trigger pulled when you hold them up. Also the CQC fight with The Boss is more about timing than anything else. It's not that hard once you get a hang of it.

MGS4 may have been the most streamlined and flawed game in the series but i still enjoyed it none the less. Unpopular opinion i actually prefer it more than MGS3 this may piss some people off but i really cared about Solid Snake and his story over than Big Boss because he as a whole feels like a more grounded character who experienced the horrors of War even as a child that a normal human could relate to while Big Boss in the other hand purposely feels like a tryhard immoral badass Super Soldier that a Call of Duty Fanboy craves for who's under 12 years old. And gameplay wise the controls and mechanics in 3 are clunky and outdated that felt like cinder blocks straped to your feet compared to modern third person controls. 3's lack of the radar from the first two games doesn't make it any easy to track down enemies like it used to. I'm not saying MGS3 is a bad game by any means it certainly has it's shines but to me it hasn't age well compared to this game. MGS4 from my perspective fit's as a good conclusion for the series to end here cause there were satisfying moments enough to at least put Snake's whole deep story to rest.

I know this is far removed from the purpose of this video, but the reason nations like Europe are able to have those sprawling welfare states is due in large part to America’s massive military working as a defender. It’s no surprise that said welfare states in Europe only arose after the inception of NATO and other such structures. As for the United States’ massive military spending, the United States is currently the world’s global hegemon. If you were to look at nations like Britain during the 19th century, you’d see them as the largest military spender in their day as well. Let’s say hypothetically that China were to usurp The United States as a global hegemon, it’s almost guaranteed that they’d be the largest military on earth to protect their status. Every superpower does this so rival states see the idea of trying to rail against their established order through means of war as unappealing at best and a guaranteed disaster at worst. I do believe that we should have universal healthcare, however. It’s honestly quite strange to me that The United States’ healthcare industry is the largest single sector in the country, and yet we lack universal healthcare.

MGS4 felt a lot to me like a 1st person/3rd person shooter hybrid first and a Metal Gear game second. But the weapons and gadgets were cool and a lot of fun to mess with. I did greatly enjoy Acts 1 and 2. I draw a similar conclusion to the game than you did, but I think I liked it a little bit more than you. I hate giving numbered scores, but I would probably give the game a 7/10. There's a lot of good and it rises above a lot of it' contemporary rivals s but there is a severe lack of focus in both the plot and the game design. I feel that some of the lack of refinement or streamlining of things in the level design department comes from pressure from SCE to make a game that would sell PlayStations 3 and b) to rival Call of Duty. All of that being said, I still replay the game annually and it was the game that made me want to get a PS3.

I agree with some parts and I can see why everyone doesn't like this game, especially older fans. Still, I'm one of those who followed the franchise from MGS1 and I totally enjoyed 4 when it came out. It might be too much sometimes with all the info in long cutscenes. I feel it's the exact opposite. A lot of Longtime/Older fans loved MGS4, more than those that disliked it. Because it's literally MGS, long info dump cutscenes, conspiracies, action, stealth, it had everything and more that made up a MGS game. I feel it's more of the younger/newer fans that played MGSV, saw the cassette tapes and thought that's how all the dialogue should work and are coming in claiming "Older fans disliked MGS4." when I honestly haven't met one long time fan of the series dislike 4, because it's an epic conclusion to this awesome story(unless you wanna consider MGR canon lol). Maybe the only complaint I heard from older fans was they disliked how Snake aged, and the mustache lol. But later accepted the reasoning why he aged. cause nanomachines son lol

Obama and Bush certainly had major rolls in this war and Clinton and Bush Sr. can be said to have influenced things also. You don’t have to like Trump but not even mentioning any other president who had a hand in this situation is totally biased. P.S. I Still liked the video and gave you a thumbs up. This is just my criticism which we all know is worth 2 cents.

I was referring to the military industrial complex as an entity itself, because it's seeped across multiple conflicts, not just Afghanistan, hence why I didn't directly say Afghanistan. And at the time of recording that track, Trump had just escalated tensions with Iran over an unmanned drone being shot down. That's why I used him as an example; to show that eleven years on (at time of recording), not much had changed.

I blamed him for accelerating military spending in a way no president before him ever did ($740 billion a year), and for nearly starting an armed conflict against Iran over them shooting down unmanned military hardware that cost us $22 million. Those were the only points I made in that 40 second segment because it tied directly to MGS4. Anything else would've been a tangent, and I typically cut the fat if it has nothing to do with the points I'm trying to make.

I only spent 40 seconds talking about real military spending because it was related to the topic of review. The point was about the U.S. over-inflating military spending instead of using those billions to solve problems domestically. That I used that very brief moment to also dunk on your civilly liable rapist was simply because he happened to be president at the time. Personally, I don't think it's healthy to get so defensive over politicians. Especially when that defensiveness flies in the face of basic reality. Then again, Jonestown happened, so what do I know?

I clicked on this to see a Metal Gear Solid 4 Review not to learn about why socialism is good. Other than that the vid is a pretty good look at MGS4. However its funny how everything has to be political with some people even when its not relevant to the topic at hand. The defense budget has been high for many past presidents, it was even pretty high under Obama when he made cuts. Not really a one president issue but yea use Trump like a punching bag like almost everyone does nowadays very original.

I'm not shy about my politics. I am, indeed, a very progressive liberal who despises Trump with every fiber of my being. That said, if you watch my reviews, I've never brought up politics, Trump or my utter hatred of him and all conservative politicians in any other review. I don't associate every awful thing in the world to Trump, and even the stuff I do, unless it's relevant to the video, I won't mention it because I like keeping things to the point. I did so here because Trump is perpetuating a very real problem, which was relevant to MGS4: the war economy, or as we call is, the military industrial complex. When Kojima wrote MGS4, we were in the middle of the Iraq War, so it would've been timely to address Bush over Trump. However, it felt appropriate because over twelve years on, the problem has only gotten worse. Obama didn't do nearly enough to cut military spending, and Trump has persistently hiked up the defense budget with each passing year, including his $750 billion package to the Pentagon, and often used misinformation to justify inflating our military budget, like claiming we didn't have ordinance or bullets when his own generals were saying that was exaggeration. I mentioned Medicare-For-All because the lack of it, especially in these times, stems entirely on the question of, "Where's the money for that?" And the answer is, "That money is being pissed into the Defense Industry." It has only gotten more and more expensive under "Orange Bad Man," and he's using the very excuses Eisenhower warned this nation about in his farewell speech. We've already seen manufacturers inflate the costs of weapons and gear assembly; charging thousands for what costs dollars to assemble. It's a self perpetuating money maker for the defense industry, and continues to be relevant to the subject. That's the danger of the military industrial complex. War means profit, and even if we're not constantly at war, "peace" means having the biggest stick, so there's constantly an excuse to piss more and more cash into this amoral war machine, even if we, the people, suffer as a result. And while I don't think MGS has ever been well written, it's at least more engaging if the subject matter Kojima's *trying* to explore is more immediately relevant to us than systems and nanomachines. As is, MGS4, to me, was very boring and tedious, storywise, because the subject matter Kojima was droning on about was not the least bit interesting. I tolerated MGS2's cutscenes because there were degrees of truth and relevance to the exposition dumps. With something as dry and insufferably wordy as "the system," I, and many other people, tend to tune out because the information isn't the least bit engaging. On a final note, you call something like Universal Healthcare socialism, even though none of the other developed, allied nations who have adopted this healthcare system are socialist nations. But M4A is no more socialist than social security or food stamps. It's a social support program, one designed to ensure that a person doesn't have to decide between paying rent and getting essential treatments. I don't believe anyone, be it you, or any republicans, *honestly* think that people deserve to die if they can't afford treatment. But that's exactly what's happening here, in the wealthiest nation on the planet, and the MiC is a big part of that. Cost of living is only getting more and more egregious, people have more and more expenses constantly looming on their shoulders, especially if they have kids. And consider this: even if you have insurance, getting treated for something like COVID-19 costs close to $10k if your conditions require hospitalization. That's *with* insurance. For the millions of Americans who don't have insurance, the costs are just a little over $37k. And if someone can't afford health insurance, the odds of them being able to afford that kind of treatment are slim to none. I can only speak for myself, but I simply cannot stand by any system that leaves people to rot. And I don't think it's something that should be dismissed just because establishment talking heads want to scare people off with the word "socialism," as if providing basic healthcare to Americans will be the fall of democracy as we know it.
