Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Review - Just Short of Greatness

Ойындар

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is a refreshing improvement on its predecessor (MGS4) that just falls short of greatness.

Bro, I remember when I was like 11, I could not get over the hard tourture button mash part of MGSPW with strangelove. I literally had to grow physically and stamina wise to be able to come back at 13 years old to actually be able to go throught with the unforgiving button mashing. Yeah I'll always remember that.

I always wondered if Kojima originally intended for Kazuhira to be George Kessler from Metal Gear 2, but went with Master Miller, since he was a more recognizable character who was already MGS1. George Kessler's backstory actually fits in more with Kazuhira's role in PW and V than Master Miller does.

How stupid do you and the idiots who liked your comment have to be to not know Miller's first appearance was Metal Gear 2, the very game you referenced? The answer: unfathomably stupid. Stupid beyond measure.

Conceptually I think this is the most innovative game since the original MGS (which itself took a ton from the previous two games). I think the execution could have been done much better, but I can appreciate what they were going for and it’s pretty impressive overall. I think the reason it’s so good has a lot to do with the constraints of the handheld. No one ever talks about that aspect of it besides criticizing it for being a pain in the ass to play. With the other Metal Gear games Kojima was given the freedom and budget to do basically anything current technology would allow him to. This was the first time since the MSX (and arguably the original PlayStation) that his team was heavily restricted in what they could create by technology and not suddenly being cut off by higher-ups at Konami midway through development. Because of that they likely went into the project with these limitations in mind and planned the game around it and I think the game ultimately benefited from it. Kojima tends to focus on style over substance in the main series console games but he wasn’t able to do that here and instead focused on making a good game rather than a good movie with gameplay in between. Again, many aspects could have been done better but I think it did a great job of translating the core Metal Gear experience from console to handheld. The game had a lot more scope and depth than I ever expected it to before release. I’m sure anyone would agree with me that the game could have been so much worse. I can think of so many portable iterations of console games that are almost unplayably bad.

Great review! Two small errors: 2:48 That is an M16 varient which I think you mistook for the M1911. That's a pretty piss poor choice against a tank though hahaha. Also you CAN do all the tanks, apcs and the helicopters (the last being the hardest) by sneaking and without being seen. It's actually the fastest way to complete most of them and far more tense which I realized too late myself. 6:03 There's a cycle option so you can tap the item and weapon buttons instead of holding it.

Cool review. You overlooked the fact that most people experienced the co-op via the ad hoc party on ps3. That allowed players to play with people across the country on their psp, not just locally. I did it all the time. Minus that, this is a pretty accurate review.

My general note on co-op was that the whole game was structured around it. I felt that was to Peace Walker's detriment, since it compromised the inventory options and boss battles. I didn't consider the Ad-Hoc Party approach since, back then, it felt like jumping through too many hoops to play a game I never felt a need to play with others. Thank you for the feedback!

I think Paz is one of the most interesting and most tragic characters in MGS, but the thing is all that is in tapes and she’s nothing more besides a typical cartoon villain in actual gameplay. Man Paz being a cartoon villain doesn’t even make sense because if you listen to the tapes she’s massively conflicted about the actions she’s doing. Hell there’s not even a hint of her being conflicted in the fight you have with her. Basically everything being exposition in tapes is a bad idea, especially if the characters don’t behave in the way the tapes suggest they would.

the game is clunky because the game is originally on the PSP. And you can compensate for that by running to safe areas before changing your weapons and equipment. You can also speed up nake by equipping naked/light camos. Also strike markers exist in the game. They are best for beating the boss mechs if you go to the boss battles with a rank 2 Carl Gustav. For people who actually poured time ranking their CGs you don't actually need then. Vehicle bosses can also be taken down by steath. It is actually the most enjoyable part of the vehicle battles. Sure, the vehicle pilots could spot you once he pops his head out but if you are patient enough you can knock him out without him seeing you.

Another very nice review! I can't understate it enough how much I love the editing of your videos. It's one of the most underrated aspects I think other reviewers could learn from! Though, your audio gains in this one were a bit off balance. Snake yelling "Bullshit!" could pass for a damn jumpscare. 'XD BUT! That aside, I was VERY impressed! And as always, I love your no-nonsense straight to the point approach. You make some really good points, and even the points we've heard a bunch before, you expand on and elaborate in ways no other reviewers do! For example, every other review of PW I've seen says the same thing. That the bosses are grindy and boring. But you're the first to actually expand on WHY them being grindy is even a negative, or why it's a downgrade from other MGS games. Because everyone else just says, "Human bosses good. Machines bad." You take the time to actually expand on WHY specific human bosses worked for mechanical reasons, not just because they're human beings. TBH though, like MGS4, I don't agree that the gunplay is any worse than any other MGS game. The enemy AI is as bad as MGS4, but in a combat situation, I had fun every time. And the wide expanse of weapons makes gunfights incredibly exciting, as you yourself showed when you were gunning down blokes with the minigun and shotgun. The game is easy but I don't think that's a bad thing because the game is meant to be experienced however you want it to be. It's like TPP in that regard. It CAN be cheesed, but that's why you have the tools to play in a way you can enjoy. :) I DO agree that Co-Op is pointless, but with the exception of PW's bosses, I don't think it impacted the actual campaign in a negative way. Coldman was a weak villain, and you're right to say that Paz and Zadornov were shoehorned at the end. So too was bringing back The Boss. However, the journey itself is so much fun that the bad villains and weak emotional crux never bothered me. All told, this is a VERY good review! And I really cannot wait to hear your thoughts on GZ and TPP! ^^

Great video! You make great content here, and I'm grateful I was introduced to your channel through your video on The Phantom Pain that popped up in my recommended tab. Unfortunately, I haven't finished watching it yet because I'm currently playing through the game, but I've got that bad boy saved in a playlist so I can enjoy it the moment I do. I'm a huge fan of the series and played all the games except Peace Walker, so it was nice here getting this bit of a recap. Although, I'm not surprised how little one needs the details of this game's plot to understand TTP. It's really bonkers just how batshit insane this game was, with all the goofy, funny shit that seemed mostly to serve as a more light-hearted entry in the series only to be followed up by some of the darkest shit I've ever seen. Seriously, does your boy Ko-jim-bob know how to open a game or does he know how to open a game?? HIs opening scenes may not have the most in the way of gameplay, but I feel this is made up for by just how creatively disturbing they can be. Just look at TTP and Death Stranding. I know the latter isn't part of the series but it's still a Ko-Jim-Bob production, which in turn allow me to produce a load in my pants after the shit is scared right outta me. Happens to everyone, I assume? Anyway, I could go on all day about all these games and equally as much on your vids! You do the games a great service, and from what I was able to watch of your TTP video you clearly got some serious skills in the field of Tactical Action Espionage!

I already have the RPCS3 emulator to play the OG demon souls but i dont even know if the older MGS got properly emulated and patched ? Too bad i have all these discs (MGS2, MGS4) but playing it on a dying PS3 at 25fps really is a hassle. I dont mind the 2000-2010 graphics, in fact, they are my favourites, i love the muddy textures, shitty anti-aliasing (or lack there of) and chunky 3D models, but the fact that it sink under 20fps every time something happens on the screen really is a pain

I love the Metal Gear Saga so much and I always find myself returning to it at times, I never get bored of it and it’s awesome story. I just wish Kojima would have stayed true to the accuracy of the technology, weapons, music, fashion and other things that were actually present to those time periods. I love how serious the series can be, but then I get thrown out of the fantasy of the story because something shows up in one of the games that everyone knows shouldn’t belong there in that point in time. Things such as A.I’s, nanotechnology, nanomachines, giant walking battle droids that look like transformers and hand held IPhone’s in the late 1970’s/early 1980’s 🤷🏻‍♂️. Some of the things even contradict some stuff in the entire saga, one example is in the original Metal Gear when we play as rookie “Solid Snake” sent in to infiltrate an enemy base called “Outer Heaven”, and they were armed with dangerous weapon called Metal Gear, it looked like an old fashioned walking tank that had the ability to fire a nuke from anywhere on the world map. Now compare the old fashioned original Metal Gear that rookie Solid Snake discovered in the Outer Heaven base and destroyed in year 1997/1999 I think (I actually forgot), compared to, back in the years of the 1970’s Peace Walker Metal Gear that had an A.I functioning it, then the 1980’s with Salalanthrpos, which was a literal giant humanoid looking Metal Gear. At the start of Big Boss’s journey in Snake Eater, Kojima was doing pretty good with the accuracy of the times with the Shagohod. Then he just had to give the fans some fan service, by having Granin be the man with the plan to work on futuristic looking Metal Gear’s, Metal Gear Rex and Metal Gear Ray along with Otacon’s Dad or Grandpa, but those Metal Gears shouldn’t even exist or be a thought way back in the 1960’s, because they were of 2000’s technology. Other than the inaccuracies of the things in certain time periods, the Metal Gear Saga is one of my favorite franchises of all time. “Long Live Solid Snake”

  • @DanSmeed

I think that can be explained by the fact that those different technologies had different backgrounds. For example Sahelanthropus was perhaps designed to be as powerful as possible and to be able to traverse different terrain. While Rex was designed to be powerful, but not as versatile. Rather, more durable. They also had different organizations and engineers behind them. Different agendas behind them. Also, if I'm not mistaken I think Sahelanthropus was erased from existence because Cipher had reasons to keep it a secret. So when Otacon designed Rex it's not like he went "Now allow me to top Sahelanthropus." Furthermore, perhaps we shouldn't think about the Metal Gears in the first two games (I mean the 1987 and 1990 ones) as canon, considering the limitations of game development during that time. I look at them more like they represent a story as a "in the big scheme of things" level. Like, if they remake those games they're going to be completely different, because now there's no need to limit the design to that extent. There's not going to be any Metal Gear standing still with Snake running around placing bombs... Or, it was just Kojima not caring about logic!

@@jerrym1218 I agree on your point about Granin though. Kinda ridiculous to think he would have designed Rex in what appears to be identical to the Rex from 41 years later. I dunno, perhaps Otacon time travelled mentally through the DNA of Big Boss and saw what he saw in 1964! I mean Kojima mean to tell us that Huey Emmerich took the exact design from Granin, then Otacon did the same from his dad. Very logical... Then why didn't he mention that to Solid? It's not like it suits the Otacon character to randomly take credit for others' work. More like he's usually informal, rational, intelligent, honest and just overall a good guy. The exact opposite of the type of person that would take credit that way. That's the type his evil fucking dad was. Not Hal.

By the way, I believe the Ray and the mech from ZOE in MGS3 is just Easter eggs. But the Rex is not, considering he's talking about it and he has documents about it on the table. I guess it's pretty much just fan service after all. I can't see any story reason for Granin to have designed Rex. Why couldn't Huey or Otacon have designed it from scratch? I can't see a reason to why they couldn't have. It's more about getting a reaction from the player I would say. To tie 3 together with MGS1.

The Philosophers had a lot of power to pull strings up to their liking, and of course later we know that they merged into becoming the Patriots, and that’s when their power climbed up to an even scarier level. I like talking about anything Metal Gear, everything about the story, it’s characters and locations are just fascinating to me, Kojima really created a great action spy thriller.

I don't agree with the characters except Coldman, this game had the most enjoyable and memorable cast in Metal Gear. And Huey was always a prick, not just in Metal Gear Solid 5. He steals someone else's work just to impress his colleagues. He's always been selfish and self-serving, and easily switches sides. He's always been a coward. And the rest of the cast is built up through cassette tapes so it you don't listen to them, you'll miss a lot of character moments. I don't know how many you did or didn't listen to or whose you listened to. Also, Chico was a child soldier but Big Boss wasn't hiring him in that scene where he rescues him, he was just trying to get him to come back to MSF where he would be safe, he even says in a casette tape that Chico didn't have to do anything at MSF and only the player will really make him do anything by putting him on a crew. Overall, I think the game is ok for as far as I have played into it, it's hard to come back to after playing Metal Gear Solid 5 but all Metal Gear games are. (Except Rising) Best characters in the series, not to much a fan of the comic bookish cutscenes but I understand the attempts to be like Portable Ops. Also, the game shouldn't have distanced itself from Portable Ops. But it's still amazing. Except for the Boss fights.

Not sure what gave you that impression. I played it day one and played its multiplayer for months back in college. I was just never a big fan because the overly busy control scheme caused my hands to cramp a lot.

I think Snake transforming into a bad guy in Peace Walker wasn’t done well. Why? Well there’s a few reasons so I’m going to list them off. 1. Snake doesn’t actually have any child soldiers in Peace Walker. Why do I say this? Chico just goes to Mother Base to be protected and Snake doesn’t send him out on combat missions. 2. Why would convincing your enemy to be your friend make you evil? Convincing terrorist, gang members, enemy soldiers to fight for you isn’t a bad thing. Really if convincing an enemy to fight for you is a bad thing then every government in the world is evil and almost every organization is. By the way the only options to deal with POVS is to either convince them to join you, kill them, let them go with valuable information, or toss them in a cage. 3. How is having a weapon to prevent governments from invading and taking you out a bad thing? Snake isn’t doing anything different from every government. Why do I say this? Well the so-called good governments of the world invades others, kills innocent people, infiltrate governments, make countries Into garbage, and tries to spread their beliefs.

I agree 100%. Too many people after playing MGSV don’t mind playing Venom because they claim this game showed the downfall of Big Boss into a villain. Have they even played the game? Every Kojima game, the protagonist is heroic and echoes the views of Kojima himself. In a tape in this game with Snake and Strangelove, he agrees with her and hopes nuclear retaliation doesn’t have to happen. And David Hayter conveys it poignantly with his voice. Like you said, Snake never used child soldiers. Chico wanted to fight too, if I can recall. Big Boss was never a villain in my eyes, he’s no different from Solid Snake actually. He was in a different time. And The Boss’s will never made much sense to me in practice. Big Boss never tried to understand her will, he intentionally wanted to do a different thing from her, by not laying down his gun, which is better to me than dying for a government who need your death to cover their backs. Sorry this comment was too long, but I’ve read too many reddit posts about Big Boss being a villain. It’s clear in Peace Walker he’s nowhere near close!

@@TheFoxCoops Those are all excellent points, which I agree with. Man for people to say that Big Boss is a villain in peace walker requires quite a bit of head cannon. What else does it require? People believing he’s evil, but the thing is stuff he did in PW doesn’t automatically make someone evil. What’s one truly evil thing BB does in PW? Not step in to take Chico away from his family and tell him that he shouldn’t fight? That’s just not getting too involved with something that is quite complex, like BB doing that would make conflict with the only ally he has in PW. Really I saw BB talking to Chico as him trying to toughen him up for what the kid is going to be involved in.

@@thegifting267 Same here, he is strengthening Chico's will. They are fighting a revolution. If anyone is responsible for Chico, it's Amanda, not Snake. You hear from Paz's tapes how playful Mother Base is with the football match. War was not something Chico could escape, and he himself decided to follow Paz into Camp Omega. Just like the children in MGSV that escape with Liquid, Miller tried and failed to give them a chance away from the gun. The people that view Big Boss as the villain seem to think he has the power to control everything around him. They accuse him of allowing the patients in the Cyprus hospital to die, but that was Zero's plan. I think Big Boss woke up two weeks before Venom. He was also in a 9-year-coma, and they think he will be battle-ready to take on XOF as well as an angry, burning Volgin in the hospital. They say Big Boss leaves everyone behind, including Miller and Venom. But if they paid attention to Ground Zeroes, Big Boss fought by his men to save Mother Base. They say Big Boss wanted to kill Paz. He asked Miller merely as a question, not a command. When you rescue Paz, he softly lays her head down and her on her side. When she falls from the helicopter, he attempts to stop her. The Big Boss I know is a compassionate man, and it aggravates me when Solid Snake is seen as more heroic above him. They're basically the same characters. Big Boss and Huey are basically darker versions in more turbulent times compared to Solid Snake and Otacon. I went on a tangent, but it had to be said. Big Boss with all his flaws is the hero in my eyes. He chose his own way. And The Boss's will means nothing. It's portrayed in some angelic way, but it means nothing when you take into account that war still continues as well as PMCs in Metal Gear Rising. So if anyone was ahead of the curve in foreseeing the future, it's Big Boss. And for those that say Venom Snake is different, he is essentially a more subdued and confused Big Boss, but he's still Big Boss in spirit. They argue that Venom seems to make different choices than the real Big Boss would, but he also would spare Huey and let him live.

@@TheFoxCoops But a child soldier doesn't not become a child just cause they choose to fight. You can still assign Chico to do work on motherbase and that means you utilize him as a child soldier. And the end credits scene that was shown on this video, dispoves that Big Boss was shown as a heroic protag. He slowly loses his morals thoughout this game, by building nukes and even saying that they have to terrorist if need be. Big Boss was only like solid snake in Snake Eater. After that, he became more and more like the thing he hated, a person who would use others as pawns like how the US used the boss. And, he became a dangerous and deluded idealist who thought he could hold a nuke as a private military company. The Boss's will was to make the world whole again, and Big Boss never accompolished that. He and Venom made the world worse with their war economy which we see the worst consequences of in Metal Gear Solid 4.

It's not complaining, and he shows a lot of love for the gameplay and seems fair to the stories even though he "doesn't care about them". That's more than I could say for some reviews that don't like certain aspects of a game. People like Angry Joe popularized and glamorized the "get overly angry at video games" type of content. I honestly hope this guy tackles more games like Red Dead Redemption 2. I love the game and I think this is one of those youtubers i could respectfully disagree with and not be angered by their video and its weird and mean spirited insults. Even if he does go a bit too mean toward Kojima like Kojima shot his dog or something.

Exactly. Except you do not have to kill anyone. Just shoot them up leaving them near dead, then stun rod them into a stun state. It makes it even more challenging. I like to purposefully not use the silencer and set off the first alarm status (green) and hide and sneak and shoot every one and stun them all while never going to (red) alert status. But the guy who made the video would never be able to near death all enemies and re enforcement without killing them then stun them, then tranq them to sleep. He would get shot the hell up.

Or just walk sneakily behind them hold them off on a place their buddies can see them and plant C4s on their butts. Seriously people always end up complaining about a gameplay loop they themselves got into. Saw it happen on MGSV and I saw it happen on Tears of the Kingdom. If the gameplay is boring in these games then it's because it's directly tied to your own imagination (or lack there off in the case of Tears of the Kingdom)
