    The custom mode remembers your selected settings. Next time you turn on your detector it will bring up your custom settings. If you change other modes they will go back to factory settings. Nice unit. I have already modified my handle length by using a graphite driver shaft . Added 4". I'll post the video.

    I took my new Garrett Ace 400i out today on my British fields. Very impressed. A fun easy machine that hits targets very well. I had no trouble with the coil cover buddy, just take it easy, better to be tight than flimsy? I think the easy stow headphones are great very good quality and better than I expected. Iron audio is really helpful. I can understand why the machine is harder for you in Colorado soil but for the UK this is a very good machine that is very easy to use and it hits the small stuff. Arm cuff length, yes I can see what you mean, it's not very long, a few more inches would help. Very impressive machine overall in my opinion.

    Sorry just saw this one Keith. Glad to see the Ace 400i is working out for you. I had a great deal of fun with it while I had it, no doubt about it. It has a fun factor I never could place my finger on. Didn't open the headphones as it was a loaner and wanted to keep it new as possible for him. That being said, it would never be the detector for me personally. For the price there are just too many other detectors than surpass it with features I value (ground balance, all-metal etc) GL and HH

    I just purchased my very first metal detector. I decided to buy the Ace 400 and I was on line searching for a video that would explain how to use it. I found this video and in it I found the necessary tutorial for me to be able to understand its use and go out there and experience my very first metal detecting adventure. I love this kind of stuff. Thanks THGT for your very informative/explanatory video. I can't wait for this weather to bring sunny days and go and have fan. Best regards from California.

    Just received my Ace400 today. Before watching this I took it out to the back yard. I haven't detected for 8 or 10 years now and wanted to "feel it out" a bit. So, with several coins I went at it. What a disaster!! Dug up about 10 holes to find nothing and couldn't even find the coins I buried!!!! LOL...... This video has helped me out more than you can imagine. Thank you so much for the detailed information. I am also reading the users manual completely. I know Real Men never read the instructions, but in this case it's necessary. ;-) Thanks again.

    Thanks again for a very informative video THGT. I bought this detector for my wife or friends to use on hunts. Here in NW Kansas it works great in our soil, so not much mineralization to deal with. I had my wife watch the video with me and it made it very easy for her to understand how the detector works. I guess I'm not good at explaining LOL!

    In mineralized soils ID's go lower than usual so staying in Coin Mode isn't good ! ( I have a mineralized soil ) You need to be Custom mode, for example, with 3 or 4 notchs less ( iron notches ) and no more less. All more than 32-34 in ID's you need to hear it.

    Fad Del ? May I ask you if the 400 is water proof? I live in the Midwest/Chicago area so there will be NO salt water or under water hunting here. Water proof in the rain though? It will be my first machine, Im 53 so I don't want a kids guality machine either. I'm looking at a Garrett AT Max or a Garrett 400. Money is available for either, what are your thoughts? Hoping to hear from you. Thanks and Happy hunting. MJH

    I LOVE the old time Garett bell tone!!! This detector at its price range is awesome.. Personally I think it's crazy to go with the AT Pro when you compare to this machine... P.S. Most people do the air test in their reviews. I find them pretty much worthless in gauging real world performance...

  • @thehuntergt

    @thehuntergt

    6 жыл бұрын

    We all have our opinions. I like air tests to show the best case scenario. All soils are different from state to state making test beds less reliable for a generalized review like this. It barely went 4 inches in my Colorado soil...bit can go a few further in a state over.

    I would just like to provide some input about the modes. Yes, it is true that you can customise all the modes, however, the difference between the custom mode and the others is that in custom mode you customise it to what you want and it will remain like that even after you turn off the detector. In contrast, the other modes will just reset themselves to default when you turn on the detector again. So maybe think of the modes like this: 4 are short term custom modes 1 is permanent custom mode.

    Hey Hunter. I love the videos, great information and even better camera work. I've had my 400 for 5 weeks now and in my moderate Idaho desert/mountain soil it's a great performer. I did take it to the Oregon coast for a week and at half sensitivity it did as good as my BH & Fisher did. I have not found any gold jewelry with the 400 as of yet and I am curious what the 10K ring was hitting at?

  • @thehuntergt

    @thehuntergt

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Kerigan Martini Thanks Kerigan! You know...I'm just not sure what the 10K rang up as as far as ID. I do know it rings up in the foil range on the Land Ranger Pro...so I will guess it is similar on the Ace and in the foil range there as well. It "should" be right below nickels...so roughly 35-40 range would be my guess. Hollow circular objects like rings will hit VERY solid and should not waiver much in ID. So if you are ring hunting...look anywhere from 30-75 on the Ace and keep an eye out for ID's that lock and rarely travel no matter the angle you sweep. Best of luck.

    +TheHunterGT-Thanks for the info and encouragement, I'm relatively new to this & know just enough to be dangerous to landscaping. Do you know much about the BH Time Ranger? I got the 400 thinking it would be better than my BH, but after seeing what it didn't find in your backyard because of soil conditions, I am a bit concerned. You want nose heavy? put a 10" coil on a BH Time Ranger! LOL!

  • @thehuntergt

    @thehuntergt

    +Kerigan Martini Yeah, I am pretty familiar with all of the 6.6khz Bounty Hunter models. Just sold a SharpShooter 2 with the 8 inch coil a month back. Not quite as heavy as the Time Ranger but pretty hefty all the same. The Ace 400 is far superior than the TR...do not let my terrible soil fool you. 95% of the USA has better soil than me. You made a fine purchase and you should be thrilled with it compared to the TR. The TR is nothing to scoff at...but the Ace does beat it quite handily in most soils.

  • @thehuntergt

    @thehuntergt

    +johnny blaze This will never hit a 10 inch coin in Colorado soil...ever. The soil here eats beginner detectors like this for lunch. Same thing happend to the Land Ranger Pro...which is a better detector than the Ace 400. Air tests at 12 inches....then once outside 50-60% less due to high iron and lead content here. A fixed ground balance on the Ace 400 means it simply cannot handle rough soils. Simple as that. The "setting" that it needs is a ground grab or adjustable ground balance. So you are correct, it is a setting error, or lack of.

  • @thehuntergt

    @thehuntergt

    8 жыл бұрын

    Massachusetts will be mild to medium soil and should have no problem going much deeper than what you see here. Most people really seem to like the Ace 400 for good reason. It is my soil that is bad...not the Ace 400. It is a fine detector - just with a few faults that glare a bit more than normal in my terrible soil. I don't think you will be disappointed in the 400 at all. IMO it is right behind the AT Pro and it would not surprise me if Garrett has a new AT Pro out by years end to widen the gap again. The AT Pro won't be hitting a 10 inch in my soil either. Something to note.

I have an opportunity to pick up a used clean Garrett Ace 400 for $120. Is this a big move up or kind of a lateral move. Am I better off saving for a Macro Simplex (sp?) which everyone says is the best budget machine. I get to detect maybe 2x a year at beach 95% of time will be soil in eastern & central PA. Hi Dave. The Ace 400 is pretty far ahead of the T4 and TP. The gap there is bigger than the Ace 400 to Simplex gap is (performance wise - excluding waterproofing). Part of the magic of the simplex is you can get it wet. But if that does not concern you - the Ace 400 at $120 is a steal in my opinion.

    We just received ours today. Have been reading the book and your video was helpful. We just want the exercise metal detecting will give us in old age. So we are not that serious about hitting gold or anything. Just don't want to do all the digging and then get junk. Guess we still have a lot to learn! ... we have a really old White we used and it found two pennies, doesn't show what your digging so this Garrett should save our backs. We still need to get things to dig with and the hand pointer. We live in CA and are going to drive to Connecticut in spring. Wondering if you can tell us places we can dig without permission?? ... we are not staying in any one spot at a time. We lived in Nebraska and can think of thousands of places there. We put the headset around our necks and turned it up. Don't like the fact that we can't adjust the volume. Seems really loud in the house. Maybe better outside. I need to rest just thinking about this!!!!

    Hello Connie - glad you enjoyed the video. Sounds like you guys will have great fun. I am unfamiliar with Connecticut as I have never been that far east. Should be pretty easy to find the local laws and most are online nowadays. Just search them for the word metal detecting with "Crtl + F" on your keyboard. Parks and schools are usually good to go in most places - just be 100%. Save the schools for weekends when no kids are around. If you see an old farm or house and the owner outside - just be nice and ask. You will get told no plenty...but maybe a yes here and there. Best of luck!

    Great video very in depth... Subscribed...... Torn between the LR pro and the Ace...I live in Indiana trying to researcher our soil to see if its high in iron and lead but no luck yet USGS has no maps I could find .If you have a link that would be great. Is the reason the Ace would not pick up the 4 inch test because of your soil? or because it just has limitations ? I would like a machine to go at least 10 inches... sorry for the long comment and questions This will be my first detector so want to cover my bases for the money. .....price range $350 tops

    Yeah man I can grab ya a link. Getting ready to step out the door for a while so give until tonight or the morning. Bump this comment if I forget lol My terrible soil is the reason the Ace 400 did not find those coins. It is a capable machine in most soils. The LRPro does not fair dramatically better. It hits them at 4 inches but the ID is all over the place. As far as 10 inch coins...neither will it a 10 inch coin in good soil unless it like a silver dollar or large gold coin. A quarter at 8 inches in good soil is definitely doable however. I did do a Ace 400 vs LRP video....go check out my thoughts on them if you have time. IMO you should buy the LRP if torn between the 2...it is the superior machine. kzread.info/dash/bejne/o56gltCQmdnAfLg.html&ab_channel=TheHunterGT

    It has a fixed ground balance of 82....no All Metal mode...no volume adjust...a nose heavy coil...8.25 wide "blocks" for notch/disc...terrible in bad soil. Those are some pretty huge negatives for me...and most sensible detectorists. The Land Ranger Pro easily beats it on performance AND features for $240. A full $100 less than the Ace 400 at $340. The Teknetics T2 Classic can be found for $400 right now with a phone call. A mere $60 more than the Ace. It's not rocket science here. I personally would never buy one and seriously question anybody who does as their sole detector when there are MUCH better detectors in the price range. I look at it as a truck backup for somebody that already owns an AT Pro or (insert better detector here). Perhaps that explains my general negativity towards it. The owner who lent it to me does not like it either and is one hell of a detectorist. So to each their own...some love it...some do not. Thanks for watching all the same. Take care and best of luck with it. I also have other videos where I use the LRP...XP Deus...F44...Teknetics T2....Gold Bug. I might be much happier in those videos as I am using much better detectors in those videos. :)

    +cache mole Sweet. Good to know and glad it is working as intended. I really love the 60fps videos on KZread. So figured I needed one for my channel. Not a fan of the fisheye effect the GoPro type cameras gave me so I got this instead. So far so good other than dropping it on concrete.

    Thanks man I really appreciate that. I'd say the best way for you to duplicate the edge vs flat coin would be an air test. You will absolutely notice a difference. Just compound that difference with the fact it is in soil. Some on edge coins will also only give a signal one way...left to right...then right to left you get nothing. Always circle to see....if in doubt...dig it out!
