Messerschmitt ME 262 - Legend Flyers - Test flights

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is the last replica 262 completed by the folks at Legend Flyers at Paine Field in Everett, Washington. The aircraft now resides at the Fighter Factory over in Virginia, where it is regularly flown.
The museum’s aircraft was reconstructed and first flown in 2011. It is painted as “White 3”, flown by Ens. Hans Guido Mutke of JG 7, the most successful Me-262 squadron during the war. Guido Mutke visited our museum several years ago, before he passed away.
The Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe / Sturmvogel (English: "Swallow"/ "Storm Bird") of Nazi Germany was the world's first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft. Design work started before World War II began, but engine problems and top-level interference kept the aircraft from operational status with the Luftwaffe until mid-1944. Heavily armed, it was faster than any Allied fighter, including the British jet-powered Gloster Meteor. One of the most advanced aviation designs in operational use during World War II, the Me 262 was used in a variety of roles, including light bomber, reconnaissance, and even experimental night fighter versions.
Me 262 pilots claimed a total of 542 Allied kills, although higher claims are sometimes made. The Allies countered its potential effectiveness in the air by attacking the aircraft on the ground and during takeoff and landing. Engine reliability problems, from the pioneering nature of its Junkers Jumo 004 axial-flow turbojet engines-the first ever placed in mass production-and attacks by Allied forces on fuel supplies during the deteriorating late-war situation also reduced the effectiveness of the aircraft as a fighting force. In the end, the Me 262 had a negligible impact on the course of the war as a result of its late introduction and the consequently small numbers put in operational service.
While German use of the aircraft ended with the close of the Second World War, a small number were operated by the Czechoslovak Air Force until 1951. Captured Me 262s were studied and flight tested by the major powers, and ultimately influenced the designs of a number of post-war aircraft such as the North American F-86 Sabre and Boeing B-47 Stratojet. A number of aircraft have survived on static display in museums, and there have also been several privately built flying reproductions.

TRULY! Where are those Czech 262s? Museums? And the one's taken to Russia? Bound to be some. A train load of engines went SOMEWHERE east. I has been said... TWO were flown to Switzerland Another to Sweden... ONE got to South America, by ship.. And two to Japan as parts...by sub... According to U-Boat people.. Interesting conjectures...

I don't know what Messerschmitt was on, but they were on top of their game. The wind tunnels are still in use today that were used to develop this aircraft! Seeing her at V1/V2 reminds me of when I take a flight Commercial in today's jets. Just astounding. Thanks for the photos. Inspiring!

Are you shure?

To think it was designed at the end of the 30's, Hitler didn't want it at the time because he thought the Me109 would do the job, if put earlier into production bombing runs would have been fewer and costlier. This was only one of many jet aircraft from Germany, the Horten HO 229 was another fine example.

Great video, about a great plane. You can see it's American because Europe, especially Germany does not allow the swatztika on anything, even in museums. There was a company making exact replicas with General Electric or Lycoming turbines. The original Jumo engines were very fragile. The Me262 is one of the most inspired designs. Cheers from the Pacific West Coast of Canada.

Thank god this superb aircraft was not available to the Luftwaffe until too late. This is a superb example Does it have the original engines. ? The benefit to the allies when they fell into their hands was immense, 262 did Not always have the advantage . I read a log entry from a spitfire pr 19 pilot who dodged an attack from a A262 by slowing rapidly dodging into a cloud and the jet massively overshot him. The jets wide turning circle enabled the Spit pilot to make good his escape.

I know Meteors were in service with the RAF before the wars end, but as far as I understand it , they were never deployed over seas , they were sometimes used to catch and shoot down V1 flying bombs.

They needed to be able to swap the engines very quickly as they had such a short service life, 20 to 25 hours. With them being located undergoing it was easy just to drop them down onto a cradle and lift replacements in. If you have them in the centerline of the wings you have a problem with the structural integrity, instead of having continuous strong single spars to hang the engine on you have to have ring spars around the engine, not good. Another point was that the axial flow engines that the Me262 had were of a small diameter than the English centrifugal jets so they could get away with it. Note also that the Boeing 737 looks virtually like an enlarged Me262 so I reckon Willy knew what he was doing.

I am 66 years old and still think it is an jaw dropping designed aircraft. It exudes menace, power and stunning looks at the same time. The South African Airforce Museum has on on display that I have seen. Wish some organisation would try to restore it. That is if it had not been sold for scrap by these savages. It was a great achievement and they built a total of five, with only four that are capable of flight. All five are sold to owners. Upgrades included modern engines (GE CJ 610), safer brakes and a few structural upgrades to correct an original flaw. They are approved by Messerschmitt in Germany and were assigned sequential serial numbers starting from the last factory example. They have a new type designation as Me-262A-1c , Me-262B-1c, or Me-262A/B-1c, sort of making them a new generation of Me-262. In the meantime, one and only one original Me-262 is being restored for short flights with original Jumo turbines that have been remanufactured using modern aerospace materials and techniques. The original restoration should be finishing up soon unless they encounter problems and cannot fly safely.

+HiWetcam Someone with the resources to rebuild two of those "crude" engines with new materials and metallurgy sure does. It took ten years to get them built, so hopefully they can do some short and careful flights soon. Wishing them success. twitter.com/paulgallen/status/570032209098182658?lang=en

I figure you're talking about the tan jet that scooted down the runway behind the 262, that looks like a Fouga Magister. Fighter/Ground attack, then trainer. Swiss made if I remember correctly. Some have finally made it to the U.S. I hope you haven't waited this long for a correct answer.

Because they always intended to make a limited number. That was in the original business plan. It is a new-build historic aircraft with a very small and wealthy customer base of museums or wealthy collectors. Modern collectors can put their money into many markets such as gold, real estate, art, antiquities but they don't want to lose equity. So making a limited number of these aircraft would keep their value up and attract the right types of investors who would buy such an aircraft. They made four airworthy and one static museum aircraft. It was still a difficult aircraft to sell because these collectors prefer historic aircraft with an actual wartime provenance and history. For example, the Flying Heritage Collection museum purchased an original Me-262 and is working on their own restoration.

The Texas Airplane Factory was their sub-contractor and did much of the work to copy and fabricate the parts. Then they had a labor dispute and the entire project was moved to Washington state to finish it.

Proper Nickel steel alloys would have made a MUCH better Jumo.. AP rounds had the priority on Swedish ore import.. And, of course, Adolf negated the planes value with his crack pot directives.. Thanking GOD he was INSANE with his hatreds and prejudices... We lost enough bombers as it was... Thanking GOD his henchmen were at each other's throats.... Thank God for IVAN! The Polish RAF guys! +375GTB The AAF test flew a captured Me-262 against a P-80, so there are probably notes out there. An Me-262 was lost during one comparison flight against a P-80 over Ohio, with the pilot having to bail out. Two miles South of Xenia, Ohio near highway 68.

    1. In Russia, Stalin wanted to modernize and issued orders to scrap all WW2 aircraft, including captured German planes for raw materials to build his new Soviet Air Force. This included raw materials from Soviet occupied territories. 2. In Germany, the Allies had organized demilitarization and scrapping. Some scrap dumps that were buried were excavated by scrap metal merchants in the 50's to rebuild the German economy. (Similar scrap metal merchants went through the South Pacific islands in the 50s to gather scrap war materials that was easy to get to.) 3. The British scrapped a number of their captured aircraft (such as their Ta-152 for example) 4. In the US, the AAF began scrapping captured aircraft by 1946-1947. General Hap Arnold had the wisdom to set aside examples of aircraft that were donated to the Smithsonian Museum. The Cold War was starting, and the Korean War was on the horizon and the jet era had begun. Back then, old piston aircraft were not that important.

soaringtractor That is correct, although a number of USAF Museum aircraft are actually "on loan" from the Smithsonian. It is a pity that the AAF scrapped other examples.

because germans finished all the reserve or rare metals and so they where forced to use worse alloy in the engine that resulted to have less life span compared to the allied ones. So it doesn't involve the validy of the Jumo Engine.
