Messerschmitt Bf109
The Military Aviation Museum's Bf-109 prepping for the 2016 Warbirds Over the Beach Airshow. This is actually a Spanish Hispano HA1112 Buchon restored with a Daimler-Benz DB 605 to an approximation of the Bf-109G-4. This was her first day of flying in the US. They didn't do a real fly-by, unfortunately.
3/27/3021 adding info for clarity: the Buchons were built in Spain in 1954 with surplus Rolls Royce Merlin engines. The plane had an intake under the propeller and the engine was upright, so the exhaust pipes sat higher in the nose. The nose of this aircraft was reconstructed for the DB 605 engine and to appear as a Bf-109. The engine for this conversion was from a Bf-110 that was interned by the Swiss after an emergency landing in Dubendorf, Switzerland in 1944.

Not quite true. The Spitfire’s agility paid off in the Battle of Britain especially over home turf where it only took 35 minutes to rearm and refuel.A very different story for the 109 which had to fly back and forth to France with only about 10 mins combat time. This was one of the reasons why the RAF’s Hurricanes were able able to take out Luftwaffe bombers so effectively while the Spitfires dealt with the 109’s.Later on in the war the FW 190 proved a serious worry to the RAF and it took quite while before later Spitfire marques could deal with it together with the superlative Mustang from the USAF.
Yes, amazing. After my 1st pilot license I saw a Spitfire at airport Münster-Osnabrück. It was also great and the old pilot looked in his overall exactly like pilots of WW2 !!!

@@goff9255 It was not a village. It was a house in farmland. The Messrschmidt 109 was not, as far as I know, a bomber. Of course there could have been the possibility of the fighter strafing civilians, but at the age of six I had no idea what was going on, except that it was more exciting than being stuck indoors. I would not have felt fear or a need to wave and ask the pilot not to shoot me. I do not know if there were instances of German fighter planes strafing civilians in England during the war; I have not heard of it. Bombing raids were carried out by bomber aircraft over London and other cities and occasionally the bombers would unload their remaining bombs on their way back to Germany if they saw a glimmer of light at night, There were strict blackout rules for all houses and cars.

There was an article about the restoration by Luigino Caliaro published in the July 2016 issue of Aeroplane magazine. It states that the "The fighter has been painted in the markings of 'Black 1', the personal Bf 109G-4 of Gruppenkommandeur Hptm Klaus Quaet-Faslem from I./JG 3 'Udet' stationed in Germany around mid-1943." I guess commander's choice, then? The article is interesting in that it notes the restoration is partially based on a recoved G-4 that crashed in Russia in 1943, flown by Feldwebel Viktor Petermann (#19257). As an aside, while the aircraft of an Iron Cross winner with 49 victories is more significant, I wish they would do some of these restorations as the original aircraft, especially when it was an actual combatant aircraft.
