The first verse and chorus, Johnny sings (approximately) an octave below Merle, then they change keys so Johnny can sing the melody higher, while Merle sings the high harmony (above Johnny). There's a female harmony too -- I guess the band is playing off-screen.

When they play the first verse and chorus, you can see their guitar fingering is in the key of G, but because they both have capos at the second fret, the song actually comes out in the key of A. As they start the second verse, Johnny starts fingering in the key of C, but due to the capos we're hearing key of D. In the first verse and chorus, Merle and Johnny both sing in the key of A (matching the capo'ed guitars), but John's vocal A is a full octave below Merle's vocal A. As the second verse begins, the two capo'ed guitars change to key of D. Johnny's vocal matches that guitar D by going up five half-steps higher than the A than he was singing earlier. In the final chorus, Johnny stays in that D and Merle joins in, but Merle sings the chorus in the key of F#, which is the harmony third above John's melody line in D. So even though Merle is singing a tight high harmony at this point, he's still singing well lower than he did (key of A) when he sang the melody in the first verse. It's all relative. And beautiful. If you want to see really beautiful harmony work, find when Lind Rondstadt was on Johnny' show. She and John sing "I Never Will Marry." In the parts where John sings lead, Linda sing a perfect high harmony that is stunningly beautiful.

Merle is the best
Thank you again Ali!! I really enjoy watching the videos too... I think it's very special to see these guys in their younger days... They are all getting old and passing on now!.. Have a very nice week!! :)
Daniel, what a great video. I really enjoyed seeing these great guys performing, and how young Johnny Cash looks here! Thanks for sharing my friend. Best wishes, Ali
Beautiful singing and a beautiful song what more could you ask for in a music video?
Jimmie was definitely the Daddy of them all.
i love both and i will put another singer with them....willie nelson.....i think they are the best....i started play guitar about 2 years ago and i can't stop singing their songs.....
Cheers
Thank you very much Michele!! :)
One of the songs that merle actually sounded better when he was in his elder years. I guess because with age he was able to put more emotion in a song about death
WOW I forgot how good JC was!
Thank you pal!!
Thank you Jack... I have always wondered if Merle ever really grew out of his mischief ways or if he just had enough money to make it go away?? lol!!
Thank you!! :)
Definitely not the first time they met.. "San Quentin is where Cash played his first-ever prison concert on January 1, 1958-a concert that helped set Merle Haggard, then a 20-year-old San Quentin inmate, on the path toward becoming a country music legend."
