I have owned one of these cars in Hong Kong for last 5 years It is the best car I’ve ever owned factoring in performance and reliability - if I had to sell this vs my 996 Turbo it would be the Porsche that’s how good it is Some points from owners view - rust is a problem yes mine has minimal on inner arches -aircon - often leaks fails due to age - dash out job 15+ hours if not just pipes eg condenser - suspension bushes wear with age replaced mine really tightened up handling but not cheap - gearbox is bulletproof but slow changes so better change manually - engine needs revving to get most out of it eg really starts moving at 3k rpm - yes torque means power lower down but the engine really sings responds better beyond 3k - exhaust resonator x pipe secondary car delete - much better sound like c63 Here in Hong Kong low miles examples are rust free as no snow salt and cheap - mine was 40k miles 4k gbp - even now at 70k miles worth 5k gbp max

As an owner for 6 years of a very clean Obsidian Black 1998 E55 (also UK car), I can confirm your opinion on the suspension feeling almost 'adaptive' to be true! 😀 When you start to push it really feels like it's become more harder. Just for info, AMG also modified the gearboxes on these, and they have an AMG ECU for the box too which is why it always feels like it's in the right gear 👍 Mine has the few known mods which takes them to about 375 bhp and is delimited. These cars do 160mph in 4th gear! Then change to 5th and do 180! absolutely phenomenal for a 24 year old 5 seater saloon car. Thanks for uploading :) Always nice to see some W210 E55 reviews 💪

I have a 99 obsidian black e55. Great cars, what mods did you do? I just purchase an 01 clk55 to go with it. Same motor and tranny as the w210. Cheers

I have this E55 AMG '97 since already 4 months(Germany) and i can tell say this is the best car i've ever owned i use it daily too

Great review! Really makes me want to search one out. I have owned a W210 E430 for the past 14 1/2 years and I absolutely love it; it's a joy to drive. It has many of the attributes of the E55 just maybe a bit toned down; 275 hp vs. 350. But it has great comfort, acceleration and handling and, if you can't find (or afford) an E55, it's a very good alternative and less expensive to maintain than an E55.

Believe it or not the 55 motor in the w210 is almost indestructible. I’ve seen guys track them with 250,000 miles. If you want a w210 now is the time to buy as they are climbing in value.

Great review! I think you nailed it on the head about the personality of the car and it's just such a complete package indeed. For 354hp you wouldn't think it goes as well as it does. Proud owner of the E55 since August last year, I wish I had gotten one earlier...

@@embajadoresboy4535 It certainly sounds like you've never driven one of the 600hp 4.0 turbo cars. You most certainly aren't outrunning them with a non-K M113 car. They are significantly faster on the straights.

Thanks for an awesome review. Although I agree with everything, what stood out most to me is the seats being comfy as I’m slightly heavy set and the suspension which seems to be the perfect ride height, yet stays planted during mild curves.

love My '99 E55 AMG!!!

Bought a facelift 2000 E55 a year and half ago and have since fallen in love with Mercedes. After owning a 2003 e39 540iA msport then a 2000 Lexus ls400, I find the E55 to be a supreme compromise when it comes to being comfortable, incredible build quality, relative performance, and overall ease of ownership. Got 180,000 miles now (I’ve put on 18000) and it’s absolutely wonderful. More solid than the bmw or lexus and a little more fun. Just needs an lsd. The e39 and ls (surprisingly) are also much better suited for shorter people as they are much easier to see over the dash and hood. Nonetheless it’s a wondrous all-around machine. Love the review and content. Cheers

HSG Automotive from what I’ve been told it’s more lazy and laid back than the 55. I was hoping to get one last time I changed my car but I couldn’t find any examples I would of been happy with in my area at the time.

How can you even doubt it? You hear 5.5 V8 in a great quality Benz, that receit is undeniable. To have thrust at any rpm, that's what big torque gives you

I have an estate, great car, I find the suspension almost perfectly suited except when the road changes camber, the car itself doesn't seem to care but from a comfort point of view the roll stiffness can feel a bit high, it can throw your head from left to right a bit more than I'd like. Having said that I wouldn't give up the ability to stay fairly flat through the corners to keep my head still and I've not driven a saloon so it may have something to do with the self levelling rear on mine.

Could be, in either form its an outstanding car for sure. With plenty of character too, which some of the more Chrysler-era AMG's fall short on

This and the CLK 55 AMG W208 is one of the coolest cars built in history

I took the car out last week for its first good spin since I bought it, Drove approximately 1700km in five days, it never skipped a beat, Really nice in long spins. Should have left wife and kids at home, are we there yet, Are we there yet Are we there yet. I enjoyed my little driving holiday ha ha.

They aren't that thirsty... I have had 4 different s210 estates from e240 through e320 and now have an e55 estate. In town the 240 was 16mpg and the 55 is 13.4mpg and on the long trip the 240 about 28mpg and the 55 is 24mpg.

i got 36 mpg in my 215 cl500, but my lighter clk430 cant do so good on the same run

I haven't cross referenced prices for this era tbh, but considering it's age I would suspect it's a lot cheaper than most of it's newer incarnations

I have bought lots of parts for mine in the last two years and they are very cheap. Control arm with bushes in £75. The only truly amg parts are the anti roll bars and the front springs and brakes, but even they are not crazy, although I found it hard to get replacement front springs so went for the nearest bilsteins for 40quid each instead of 350, and the car rides perfectly, and besides both originals had broken in the Same place so maybe they were a bit flawed... Still drove about on the broken springs for years and it drove ok!

This is my dream car I see them for 7-10k but I’m nervous to sell my pretty reliably gs300 towards one cause they are older and probably will need 2-5k of work after purchasing

My advice is to get the best one possible, I bought the car in the video, I haven't spent any money whatsoever on it because it is in perfect condition, Brings a smile to my face every time I drive it, not recommend as a daily driver hard on fuel as noted in video, also in Ireland road tax for this size of engine is €550.00p per quarter .

I love to read these kinda comments wen im watching these review videos n at first thought maybe a little too good to be true so I started watching all of them n reading comments n I haven't found anybody complaining or saying somebody Bad about this. And I just bought my first ever mercedes n its a 2002 E55 AMG (W210) but in my time I drove CLK, C ,E,S,ML, classes But never AMG AND I JUST LOVE THIS CAR. I'm never selling it im gonna Floss it out n keep it cos i have found my one true love n I drove EVO'S,STI'S,,BMW'S,American muscle, Trucks etc. all of em have plus n minuses some I wouldn't mind having at all but this Benz right here is just Perfect. Power , Comfort,looks,style etc. I can't believe I been missing out but honestly the only reason cos i could never even afford only dream about it lol So enjoy yo AMG its gonna be a classic Rare AF O.G car cos it already is try finding one in great shape looks n mechanicly wit low to medium miles is M.I.P.

I'm lucky to get 20mpg out of mine in daily use although it will do 25-26mpg on a long run if I keep to the speed limit.

Not sure what’s so shocking. They are a great car outside of not being available in manual and a few rust issues. I’ve had a 99 w210 amg for six years

@@HSGAutomotive I have a 99, 2004 and 2006 E55’s the w211’s are much faster but they also have the air suspension and more electronics. Still good cars though. I have an 05 clk55 and just bought an 01 clk55 and am gonna sell the 05 as the 01 is much more comfortable

I think the current Dodge Challenger/Charger/Chrysler 300c uses the very same platform this car uses🤔

E430 is cool nearly the same ;) even more relax more comfy cheap tires 235/45 vs 265/35 more economic and way cheaper to insure in some countries and is ULEZ free in uk :D best MB youngtimer for london

Maybe i am a bit older than you guys, i do admit this is a beautiful car, but no comparison to a E500 124 or there is also an A.M.G version, very big difference in the build quality

I agree that the w124 is a very strong and well put together car In my opinion they feel like a older style car completely, nothing wrong with that if it's what you are looking for, The w210 e55 is also very well put together and solid in my opinion, rust problems aside, Would like it to have a slightly softer ride, If I owned it 20 years ago my opinion on the harsh ride would be different I am sure.

I will not argue w124 has better build quality as I also got one (a 300ce). But, in terms of driving, 210 amg is 100% more refined compare to 500e

Mine doesn't have a sunroof, many people prefer that especially as these have climate control, the original owner of mine ordered it in Germany because he couldn't get one without the sunroof in the UK at the time apparently.

That leather interior looks really bad tbh. Black colour would look much better.
