One thing to say about the W210 E55 is that without it, we wouldn't have an E39 M5. Back in those times, BMW was planning on the 540i as being its most powerful 5 series. Then Mercedes made this. BMW had to respond.

All good, then merc came back with the w211 e55 😉 much faster than e39 and even tho e60 puts out slightly more hp 475 vs 507, the m5 only puts down 380 ft/tq vs 517ft/tq out of e55. Straight up torque monster, not hard to push 600whp and over 600 ft/tq. Love my e60, but not much touches the w211 with m113k

I own a 99 E430 and a 00 E430. The "youngest" has 223K and since I bought it 6 years ago the only thing I did was replacing the ac compressor and regular maintenance (spark plugs, brakes, fluids...). I have driven from OK to Alaska and then California back home: 12k miles in one month, some days 600 miles and I never got tired of driving. That tells you how comfortable and reliable this car is. I´ve been looking for an E55 for a long time...basically 20 years...but never had the opportuniy...who knows! Thanks Alex for showing how great is the M113 and this W210 chasis!

I have a 2001 e320. No rust here in Vegas! But the sun here is really hard on the paint and interior. The interior is getting shaby. With 150k miles it runs great. It is a sport model so stiffer springs. Possibly stronger v6 engine? Have to constantly fix little things like window regulators, (why did they use rivets on them?) rubber boots on the mirrors and the base of the mono wiper. Even the antena cover was missing when I bought it 2 years ago. Engine is untouched. I bought some chrome 17" 7 spoke wheels off another car from G&G Autohouse here and new tires. May be my last car since I am now 71, so have to take care of it. Love driving this car!

My step father brought home a brand new 2001 E430 when I was a young chap. I’ve loved the W210 ever since, especially the E55. I used to steal my step dads car at 2am and go do doughnuts with my friends. Ahh the days of being an edgy teen. The car was eventually passed down to my step brother who absolutely trashed the thing and it still went 300K miles. They’re such solid cars. One of my favorite parts was the gauges; they’re old school enough to be reminiscent of the classic 80’s Mercedes font without making the interior feel dated.

Alex my folks used to own a facelift 2000 W210 E430. It wasn't a 55 but it was soo much fun. It produced 400nm of torque at 2,000rpm, all the way to 4,500 i think from memory. It had so much grunt everywhere that it could make you car sick if you were heavy on the throttle. Arguably the W210 is the last of the "real" old school Mercs. I miss that car.

Also I replaced the clutch fan with an electric one from a 2001 E320. Had mine to 200k miles and was still running the 1/4 mile at 13.7, not a world beater but it felt great. Our 2001 Silver (with black and grey seats...forget what they called that) Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG with 163k miles in "good" condition was recently totaled (rear-ended; very sad!) and the insurance paid out $11k for the E55! Values are truly going up. 163k miles didn't even matter. $11k represents "Retail" value or what they call "actual cash value" (which is based on a recent study of W210 E55's sold in our region....Southwest: Arizona, California, Nevada, etc,..). I was shocked to get so much because KBB, NADA, Edmunds tell a different value (about 60% of $11k they offered me), but shouldn't be because these AMG's are all very much sought after. Anyway, this E55 was truly the best overall automobile we have ever owned. It was clocked doing sub 5-second 0-60's many times. I laid 300 feet of rubber a few months back leaving a car wash. We had it for about 6 years. Paid $8200 for it with 97k miles on it in early 2015 and we spent about $4500 overall during those nearly 6 years on a few sets of tires, MOTOR MOUNTS/TRANS MOUNT (several sets) brake rotors/pads, fluids, filters, oil changes, and a throttle position sensor. I did all the work myself. Very easy car to work on. Parts galore out there. We even had an E320 4Matic one time and are considering getting another W210 E320 soon (since can't seem to find any decently prices E55's locally). We took it into the local dealership one time to get oil changed and checked out overall (this was early on) and they treated it like it was what it is...VERY RARE! We got a sweet ride comped to us for the day. Again, best car ever! Will truly miss it. BTW, there is the same year for sale in Virginia for $7500 with only 24k miles on it. Someone scoop that up! It looks MINT!

My first car, a Chevy Corsica I earned working at Taco Bell. It took me months to earn the $1100 of which my parents wanted to “borrow” to help my brother with some bills. I now have a W204 C63 P31 package and also an F-Type V8S. The F-Type is faster, shifts lightning quick, but there’s just something in the C63 that makes me want to hop in it over the Jag. They have similar hp but deliver it in such different ways. The F-Type is like a puppy. Everyone loves it, it’s full of energy and wants to tear things up at any time. The C63 is like a heavy weight boxer. It’s more athletic then anything in the room and so can dance around without tiring but also feels extremely strong and the punch it delivers is hard.

I just purchased a 02' E55 black on black, I've had many cars. I feel like a little kid with a toy. I've been looking at the market for these cars for a few months. About two months ago you could've bought a 4-5k cheap E55. Those cars are now 7-9k. Cars with under 60k miles are 25-30k.

One of the best ever! I'm in Chicagoland too and have a rust-free 2001 E55 with 207k miles... STILL a rocket, still strong as an ox.. It's a project that I've slowly been going through. Cali/Arizona original, never seen snow/salt... When can I bring it by so you can help me do some work to it? Will pay! Wanna do a rear dif on it for me or a timing chain? You have no videos of W210 repairs. Those are the two tough repairs that are last on my list..

Now I see why your automotive content is one of the few I can tolerate on here. We have very much in common. I never gave Merc’s a look when I was 16, and my first car was an L98 Corvettte. I then got into LC2 powered Grand National’s, but did have an opportunity to drive a Merc and really appreciated the engineering and quality of the vehicle. I thought to myself it was one of the best engineered and driving vehicles I had been in (a W124 300E) and knew one would be in my future. I then bought a 1992 LT5 ZR-1 ~1995 when I was at an age when I really didn’t need it, but wanted one since I heard of them (I was 19 at the time and just out of high school). Then a few years later sold it and got a 1997 C5 when it was released. Ironically I read the same Motor Trend article you posted at work and it peaked my interest. Having a soft spot for the W210 since I first saw one on the road in 1996, and started looking for one around 2002 to purchase, I could not find one with the options I wanted. I then noticed the E55 in 1999 had nearly all options standard, and that was a plus for me. I drove (alone no less) ~200 miles to look at one in Atlanta that was for sale, with no intent on purchasing that day. When I drove it and pulled out of the dealers parking lot onto the road and saw the flashing triangle without even trying, I had a feeling I may be driving it home. After getting a late lunch, I drove it back to the dealer and an hour later was one my way home, in an E55. I left my 5.0 Explorer at the dealer and said I will be back to pick it up in a week or two. Much like yourself, I have many Mercs now, and and still a 1987 Grand National. I purchased Star Diagnosis (now Xentry of course) several years ago and a subscription to it and diagnose and code/program control module for independents in the area, and has become a second job for me. These cars really have so much in common with American muscle and what appeals to me with domestic vehicles (front engine, RWD, and an engine that puts out too much power to put it all to the pavement) no wonder they are beginning to catch on to traditional American muscle car enthusiasts!

Hey Alex, great video on a rare AMG. Did you know that only 1,517 W209 CLK55 AMG coupes were imported into the US? That too is a rare, quick NA M113 AMG worthy of consideration. It was the F1 safety car in 2003. My favorite feature is the lack of a B pillar which allows an open airy expanse when the windows are rolled down. I'm on my second one, the first being totaled by an inattentive driver plowing into my SO....not her fault. Sadly, one less example, but the rarity goes up.
