Mercedes-Benz is ditching EVs?!? What the CEO says is coming next...

Спорт

In a shocking move that stunned the automotive world, Mercedes-Benz just scrapped their $47 billion electric vehicle program and announced a return to combustion engines. This huge reversal comes only two years after the luxury brand boldly committed to phasing out all gas-powered cars by 2030.
So why did Mercedes suddenly abandon ship right as the electric era was gaining momentum? Well, turns out the regulatory winds pushing them towards EVs... have died down.
It all started when ambitious government mandates essentially forced automakers like Mercedes to embrace electric-only fleets or face crippling fines. Mercedes took the bait and made a big public pledge to go all-in on EVs, despite electric sales only making up 11% of current demand.

Read Consumers Report or Edmonds, Mercedes vehicles in North America are NOT dependable and unnecessarily expensive to repair. What they build in Alabama is Junk.

Not quite correct, Merc has decided to cut back on making as many EVs not stop making them, they expect sales to be over 50% for EVs, so there not stopping making them.

They lie to you. Ignore their range statistics, and just take 100 miles off what the manufacturers say and you won't be far out.

I am also a Mercedes driver and I would like to go electric. My problem is that I need a sporty car. The sportiness of my car is measured by its ability to transport sports gear, such as skis, mountain bike or fat bike to the trails. Since I don't want to be locked in my home town, that car needs to be economical, so estate car on stilts (SUV) is bad answer. E-Class estate carries full suspension MTB or fat bike easily. Now which Mercedes EV does the same for the same money as well maintained E-class with good service history? Please give me a truly spacious energy effocient EV estate and I am happy to go electric. Glad to see that BMW and Volkswagen have already woken up to reality of active people. i5 and ID.7 look like viable candidates for practical and energy-efficient car. Why doesn't Mercedes even try to offer an electric alternative of its best ever model?

Now proven that full EV's are impossible to live with under normal circumstances. All right if charging at home and just doing local runs with returning home at night to charge. The moment goes away from reliable charging, it becomes a nightmare of slow, broken or just plain busy charging stations where it takes hours to even part charge. Plug in Hybrids, or standard Hybrids have proved that this is the answer. If all vehicles Hybrids, fuel usage, and therefore green house gas emissions would be cut by up to 75%, and this would be a great improvement in the short term, eg to 2035, than we currently have.

Not really. It has been shown that people who buy plug-in-hybrids rarely charge them (even if they can do so at home). They only buy them because they have great tax incentives.

A few points that never gets looked at when we talk about cars. 1. The entire world is in turmoil since 2008 and intesified negatively downwards even more since COVID-19. 2. I always felt that electricity production around the world is currently not sufficient & even more so, not sustainable in it current form at present to deal with the demands at the moment. 3. Political will / let me rephrase this; The political ideas of the day is not the will / need of the very people for why politics exists, but for those in politics lining their private pockets with hard earned cash of the people. We the people are being dictated to by the politicians, whom actually work for us / reversal of roles and power and less than 10% of humanity globally knows, understand and actually realises this. 4. The world is not ready for electrification. 12 years in the making of Mercedes Ben's existence & even so that of the Porsche history ( I might be out on the 12 years ) both dabled in electric power trains however Governments pushed this ideas to the side in favour of fossil fuel taxation. 5. Currently charging an EV is quite expensive in light of what the actual vehicle cost since electricity producers all over the world has increased the costs drastically. The people can't afford it to run their lives at the moment yet charge a vehicle... 6. The only way EV would make sense is when they cost the people either the same as what they intend to replace or at least cost no more than 30% of the current refilling with what fossil fuels cost. Then the EV idea is viable, sustainable and will have impact. 7. Building EV is costly and only the super rich can afford them and if you really investigate I recon the carbon footprint if the the same but bigger. 8. A combination of power trains sounds more viable. The transition period to the "green" idea has to be important but can't be rushed. 9. The Electrification is / has been for political personal gain and not for the planet, open your eyes... 10. Electrification of all public transportation would have been my 1st step where Governments assist / subsidise auto makers to push the EV idea and it realization of it, however Governments are only in it to make money and gain more power and control. 11. WELL DONE MB for waking up, I think the way they have evolved the petrol engine over the years is magnificent. Look at the AMG's with big V6's & V8's and compare with the new 4 in line AMG, what an incredible achievement. Yet I think the road / evolution of that of the diesel engine can still be exploited to its full potential achieving beter results / engines than that of petrol. 12. Don't forget about the hydrogen idea. 13. If I had to comment 10 years ago on this very same subject, I would be repeating myself now. 14. I have a 2008 W204 diesel and I love her and think the base engine can be developed still. She will out live me as long as their is diesel and mechanical care. 15,,,,, Follow the money, if you don't see it in your & your neighbours accounts & in your friends & families acvounts but know more money leave than comming in; know what's been happening is not for your benefit at all ! Don't picture me as a die hard petrol head ( diesel monkey LoL ) , I like innovation and progress but not when 90% of the cost of it comes out of my labour. Save motoring .

True, but only for you folks with almost free fuel. For us who have to pay, shaving off two thirds of the fuel bill is meaningful saving. EV provides just that for us who can charge the car at home.

Lack of EV technology and poor suppliers chains that caused the failure. Battery swap is the next generation of EV markets.
