The same happened as with quality on general. Especially with Mercedes. They used to be cars that were reliable and could be driven for ages. They took pride in being able to build a solid car. They still had buyers of new models. These days they build low quality stuff, doesn't last etc. There's no point in buying a new mercedes, bmw or audi, they are made to be leased. You lease it, don't worry if something breaks. Then some sucker buys it as used and gets to deal with the costs involved. Which is ironic considering the ultra green mindset of Germany these days. These are made to be single use, like Tesla etc. The green revolution has created more throw away stuff than ever existed. It is the same with powertools etc. It's all about make them last just long enough and sell them more stuff.

Cars used to have analog clocks in the center of dashboard, proudly displayed, and now in their place a useless selfie camera that will NEVER be used for Zoom calls, let’s be serious. It’s crazy to me that the most prominent thing on the dash is a selfie camera, just goes to show the target of this “new luxury”: influencers wannabes who will feel so cool to take a selfie with their mercedes. And as the cost of production decreases, by removing every button and every fine material, replaced by glossy plastic… the prices are skyrocketing.

The "4 banger" in my 240 Diesel was no longer viable at about 110,000 miles due to low compression in one cylinder. A factory rebuild engine shipped in a wire cage from Germany and installed by a Mercedes dealer lasted about 10,000 miles before it developed low compress in one cylinder. A second factory rebuilt engine allowed the car to make it to 220,000 miles but it was a rusted through wreck by then with the interior falling apart too. My first Benz was a 1972 280SE sedan that I bought while attending ASU. At the time, it was over 20 years old. What a tank. Fuel injected, 4 wheel independent suspension, beautiful wood interior and (thankfully) no leather, but the MB tex that even though it was a light beige and was almost as old as I was, looked brand new. Have no idea why I sold it, now almost 30 years later I'm thinking this would be PERFECT for my once monthly run between Charleston and Kennebunk. Will have to check it out! Question: Is the 4 cylinder up to the task of highway cruising, hours and hours at an indicated 75/80 or is the 3.0 six that much better? Can't wait to get into a quiet car for long road trips!

And again Benz killed with those looks, such a beauty. And also BMW killed 5-series too with the new gen 🐽

Why they even bother putting a steering wheel anymore? Just give me a slider to point the car where I want it to go.

Rest assured that some kind of yoke is in the works at the Daimler headquarters. Don't say that slider idea out loud...wouldn't want to give them any ideas.

I've seen brand new G-Wagens on delivery trailers that weren't polished. At all. They look like spraypainted old beater cars. Mercedes-Benz seems to only have quality control inspectors on duty every few days or so.

@@lawrencefearon6830 All good, it's sad to see where mercedes is nowadays. They have great looking product but the build quality just isn't there anymore. Which is crazy considering it was top notch in the 80's and 90's. Throttle house reviewed the new SL63 AMG and they even mention how bad the quality of the paint is... and that's a a car that starts at 109,000$!

In the UK, this is easily a petrolhead’s car. Not everyone wants a crossover or brashness, plus it delivers on everything a good daily should be. I hope it never gets discontinued.

@@ghuldorgrey I’m afraid I’m going to have to disagree. Not everyone can afford different tools for different jobs and I’d wager the E is an ‘everything’ car. The only area this can improve on is handling, but we know this isn’t part of the memo.
