Mercedes Benz EQS SUV - Is this big Benz a blinder or a blunder?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It was inevitable that Mercedes-Benz would make a large, luxurious, all-electric SUV, after all, it already makes the GLS and G-Class. But instead of electrifying one of those, it has added a third to its line-up. And this one is spun from the EQS saloon platform making it a proper, ground-up EV. But do we need it? After all, the company has been quite successful electrifying their combustion engined cars, so did they really need to add yet another, large, heavy SIV into their repertoire? The only way to find out was to put the new EQS SUV through the road test that actual car buyers trust when it comes to buying their next electric car - the AutoEV one.
AutoEV - all electric, all independent.

Great comprehensive review as usual Bryan. Whilst I’m not in the market for a £130k+ car (gulp!) I do agree it’s a bit disappointing to see MB producing something like this. I know you’re not a Tesla fan but in terms of weight, efficiency and technology this is a long way behind and I do hope MB start catching up soon. We need the legacy makers to produce something different that starts moving EV’s on from these huge SUV’s (and TBH this ones a bit ugly too!).

Thanks again for watching and continuing to support the channel Ian. I just wish they would be brave and give us a car that moves teh game on. As I said in the review, a company with the engineering might of Mercedes-Benz should be taking on the likes of Tesla and showing them how a legacy manufacturer can turn the tide and do something revolutionary. This isn't that car. I just didn't quite see the point of it. I used to sell Mercedes back in 1999 and the then new A-Class was that car, despite some shortcomings. If they could do it then, why not now with EV power?

looks better than the sedan version, I think they are just making what people want, but I don't know why people want them

Chris Harris once made a very interesting comment about how manufacturers need to be more brave and produce cars that dictate to customers what they should be buying. They did it years ago and thats how we ended up with cars such as the Ford Mustang, the Mini, the Renault Espace and others. Nowadays its just SUV after SUV after SUV. And this is coming from a man who drives an SUV!!!!

Great review - good information and neutral helicopter overview but why doesn't anyone ever mention the onboard charging speed? For some reason the only versions which have 22kw AC charging are the non Line models. Every Renault Zoe has 22kw charging so it can't be that difficult to include. A Zoe is 30k new (for about 5 mins then its 15k) for cars costing more than 90k 22kw should be standard to future proof them.

maybe, just maybe, someone could think about "doing an estate car" with the benefits of base weight & aerodynamics over an SUV and, due to the lack of oversized wheels, equivalent space. a lighter/more efficient vehicle can go further on a smaller battery, so even save on the cost/weight of the battery too. Maybe in a few years time

A modern-day, first generation A-Class with EV power. Big on the inside, compact externals with lots of tech and a range of up to 250 miles with fast charging capability. There, I've said it! That's what the world needs!

@@AutoEV Sorry disagree it’s like the buses less people use them so put up the fares so even less can afford to use them. These cars are great but only a few can afford them, improve the more affordable and sell more! Maybe I’m being naive but that’s just my opinion.

@@paulhammond5599 its not the market for now - the ICE cars are still much cheaper to produce, EV´s are hold back especially by the huge heavy and expensive battery back - all need to be developed still, that costly. So its trickling down from the larger higher priced models. Even out of china there are not coming those cheaper models yet. So you are not wrong, but it will take still a while. Like VW will deliver the ID2 in 2025? I also put my money that the battery technology will be lightweight(er) - 2025 half the weight same capacity.

It didn't feel like one inside either. It was ok, but like I said, the Genesis GV70 I drove a few eeks back felt much more special inside, and it was £40k less. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

Another unnecessary bloated 3 tonne luxo-barge as you say - BUT - at least it’s bland looks won’t be terrifying children into therapy the way that the BMW iXs have in our village.
