I always thought that my W202 gear- shifter was a bit clunky..now I know why..the bush in the drop-arm to the selector spindle was missing! So for two-and-a-half quid (say 4 bucks) and Mr. Fupas' technical wizardry....it's all hunky-dory. Thanks.

Thanks for this - after watching your video I checked and found that there was no longer a bushing on mine (26 year old C250). Shortly after buying the car last year I found that the ignition wouldn't crank unless I jiggled the shifter. I fitted a short length of 15mm copper pipe over 4 O rings on the shaft. This may not last long, but for now I'm pleased that the key works straight away every time.

I just wanted to send out a big thank you to fupabox, This vid gave me the info I needed when i broke the shifter unit. PS it can be opened and r&r'd, although reassembly is tricky. by the way all I found was kids sweets under the consol. but I did fix the winter/summer switch whilst putting it back together. result. PPs don't do it 6.3 engines need uprated running gear, the engine is only 30% of the equation.

Thanks soo much sir....so there's only one bushin....folks say there's one in the bottom under transmission...but you make it seems as though theres only "1" and it can be entered from top as well as bottom for the gear shift. berntd The one that attached directly to the shifter can easily be done from inside, I did my son's c230k in about 10 minutes from the drivers seat...honestly I have never had the rear one go bad except on my R129, and it couldn't be reached from above..but it had a longer shift rod to the transmission .. unfortunately , I'm not sure..

Have you replaced the other shifter bushing? towards the engine.. I tried that but there is not enough room to work with..

i did take apart console replaced bushing today easy fix. but still not starting pulled codes nothing stating neutral switch or brake light swicth have it coming in mail so guess i can take apart and check switch in working order.i did replace battery 10 years old and hit starter with hammer not even a click thanks for response.

sounds like your transmission is slipping ,improper fluid level, or sloppy linkages ... Is the shifter tight and firm between gears , or does it have a lot of play ? if it can wiggle around a lot, then the linkage bushings are gone and moving the gear lever isn't moving the linkage on the transmission properly.. Check the fluid level, engine running for about 15 minutes.. smell it to see if it smells burned.

Love your videos, Mr. Fupabox. You mention an adjustment to the transmission that lines everything up with park...is this hard to do? Any tips?

Hi there great videos you do really helpful. I have a c36 amg w202 sometimes when I select drive I notice the D doesn't light up and the car won't up shift or down shift but if I wiggle the gear knob about the light comes on and it works. Do you think this may be the bushing. any feedback would be greatly appreciated:)

+jimbobmedog It is very possible it's the bushing...also possibly a gunked up contact inside the shifter housing..a spilled coffee or pop/juice with sugar in it , can gum them up..

Great video thanks. New Question... I have a 2001 w210 e430 and the back-up (reverse lights) do not illuminate. The bulbs and fuse are ok. Is there a reverse switch to be replaced or is internal to the shifter module? Thanks.

There may be no problem at all..did you replace a reverse bulb ? if so you may need to unhook the negative battery cable for a few minutes to reset a fault code.. If you have a bulb failure warning on long enough , it sometimes needs resetting through the dealer scan tool, or battery unhook sometimes works. there is a reverse switch on the shifter ..right side in the rear once the shifter is removed

I've never heard a computer fault that would disable a bulb. The bulbs are good. I took them both out and tested them on the bench. I think its the switch.

the canbus system will shut off power to a blown bulb after it detects it is not working (it does this to prevent shorts and possible fires) usually turning the car off then on resets them. In the case of power door locks and some other systems including the license lights on my w203.. a code reader reset is required to enable that system to be re-energized. Sounds silly but true. The worst thing I found you can do ,is to replace a blown bulb while that circuit is on ( I'm used to doing that so I can see the new bulb is good..but the w203 didn't appreciate it...it caused a lot of panel removal and wire testing (no power to wires which now made no sense) I plugged in the canbus diagnostics and cleared the code just for the hell of it ..problem gone ) Here's the essence of the problem. Newer Mercedes are too smart for their own good. The SAM unit can detect a blown bulb and then repurpose another bulb to do the duty of the blown one..so a tail light becomes a brake light etc. In order to do that it removes power from the faulty circuit (again to prevent shorts or fire etc.) When the car is restarted it will attempt to activate that circuit normally .. if the bulb has been replaced with the car off and all is good in Benzland, it will work as it should .. If it detects the non working bulb again ,it will cut power and re-assign the circuit. I'm not 100% certain replacing the license bulb with the car off and re-starting would have cleared everything because I don't recall restarting and then checking for power at the wire. I did jump straight to WTF mode and pulled out the code reader. In the case of power door locks, I can say with certainty that they will be disabled after several failed attempts to operate. And from my experience ,only a code reset will return them to functioning after the repair . for info on automatic bulb substitution see page 285 here www.mbusa.com/vcm/MB/DigitalAssets/pdfmb/ownersmanual/2001_c240_c320.pdf all that being said ..it is possibly the reverse switch

jfyi, the front linkage one can be seen right under the car if you follow that rod/plate towards the engine. I can barely fit my hand in there, stops at the wrist

I have a 1997 c280 without the key being in the ignition and foot on the brake I'm able to shift into any gear. Any help that I'm able to get would be appreciated thank you.

+Carlos Marques There is an electronic/solenoid lock on the side of the shifter.. the smallest plug (2 wires I think) on the right rear side of the shifter, under the console cover..it may be unplugged

okay bushin was change from top/inside.....however clip came off (looks like flat steel horse shoe) my park is in neutral-my reverse is in drive...went to have car towed and put on lift...the guy said you have another bushin on bottom that needs replacing as well...talk to me FUPABOX is there another bushing-does this car have 2 bushing for transmission area???

Could this be my problem on my 99 ml320 seems to stay stuck in first gear but when I drove it earlier is was shifting up fine but not down shifting because the take off is extremely slow for about a half hour till it went back into first and stayed there

+trevor shaw Sounds like the transmission is going into the "safe" mode or "limp home mode " there is a problem with something in the transmission itself, not the bushing..check fluid level first

Thank you so much for that link. My car isn't worth a lot, but I still enjoy driving it. My repair philosophy is do whatever you can to avoid paying the dealer. When my driver side mirror quit working because of cracked plastic and gears, I thought at first I would just buy a new one. They wanted about $400! So I took it apart and fixed it with paperclips and JB Weld. If I was more tech savvy, I would have recorded the procedure and gave it you for appreciation. Thanks again

On this one the bushing was toast , and there was no where to get a real replacement .. It actually was fine for another 100k km .. the bushes can keep it from shifting out of park, but a bad brake light switch can also cause this.

i have a 1998 c230 and when i insert the key to start it beeps but the key wouldn't turn to start the car but i can shit the gear from park all the way to 1 without starting the car . could you please help me or know what the problem could be.please

So, this is a desperado commenting on an almost 10 year old video, but desperate times, desperate measures and all. My daughters 2000 C280 has survived a LOT of trauma, lol. I have "unstuck" the e-shifter with electronic cleaner, MAF cleaner etc. more than once, it's 100% functional when liberal cleaner applied - assumption is gummed up contacts from spilled soda. You said LED replacements were not worth the work. So finally the question: Think it's worth pulling the shifter for a better bench cleaning and partial disassembly? These are not cheap and I want to try and make it reliable. So far cleaner spray fixes it 100% of the time over a half dozen failures to release the interlock solenoid. The miracle is if you read comments, AND see this, AND feel like replying AND have info to share. I am crossing fingers/toes/body parts not meant to cross. 😜😜

I would pull it and dis assemble as far as you feel comfortable . lube and clean everything .

no voltage going to starter for ignition so ordered today a neutral safety switch. so its inside shifter box looked under car near transmission just rod going to it.

2002 c240I replaced the radio. disassembled the center console, installed radio and reassembled the console. everything went perfect without any problems. The very next stop I made was at a gas station. I pulled into a parking spot and tried to put the car in park, but it would not go above neutral. I put it in neutral and applied the parking break. I was not able to take the keys out of the car, as they can not be removed without the car being a park. when I tried to put the car in reverse to leave I discovered that I couldn't do that either. I had to put the car in neutral and push the car out of the parking spot in order to leave the gas station. The car is functioning perfectly in every way, except I cannot get the shifter to engage in reverse or park, it will only go into neutral and drive. I have been told that it is likely a very simple fix replacing a clasp on the linkage of the shifter. My problem is that I cannot get sufficient room beneath the car using my ramps, and it is impossible to use jackstands with this vehicle, because the only place you can jack it up is using special groovs made that work only with the Jack provided, therefore you cannot put it on jack stands. Is this issue known to anyone out there? If so can you offer detailed instructions on how to repair it? Pictures would be great. Thank you.

+Jeremiah Day the shift shaft bushing should be able to be accessed in the same way as on this video..essentially, with minor differences due to console design.. I always replace them from inside the car, much cleaner, and gives you the chance to thoroughly clean anything that may have spilled on the console over the years

+Jeremiah Day The other possibility is the shift interlock wiring plug, that plugs into the shifter..may have come loose

I'm having an issue getting into the "manual gears". It will not let me move left from drive to drop down to gears 1-4. It's like it's disabled or blocked off, i get zero action from the shifter like its hitting a barrier... Any info on why, if & how I can repair this would be greatly appropriated. Hoping it's not a major overhaul as i have no intension of remanufacturing the shifter box unless it's a simple fix inside or something stuck or needing lubrication or something of the sort. It's not that i ever used them, maybe once in 10 years, stuck in a bad snow storm but would like to fix it for peace or mind as i have repaired almost all the little glitches, mechanical and electrical this model has... I had the same problem. Just resolved it. I took apart shift knob "box". Everything was lubricated, but couldnt shift to manual gears. Something just like blocking. Problem was only bushing/nave not in its place. Plastic one, with grooves in sides. Thats all. I hope it will help for someone.

Do you know if you have to replace the whole thing? Or, you can change any bulb?

the bulbs are LEDs that are soldered to an electronic panel..they could be replaced, but it would be a lot of work

Hey, my gear shift is very lose. Whenever i put it into drive you can't tell whether its in gear or not unless you look. Is that common or is there some kind of adjustment i can do to make it a bit more exact when shifting? i have a 96 C280

sounds like one of the 2 (or both) plastic bushings is worn .they are only a couple dollars each..1 on each end of the rod connecting the shifter to the transmission

cool job :) I was wondering about the gear lights because mine doesn't shine brighter in the R, N, and 3 ..... illuminates, just doesn't get brighter when shifted into those positions like the others do when selected .......though shifts fine ..... have you encountered this before?

there are little led diodes in the circuit board under the position indicator...prob. burned out...fixable , but a real pain to get to..5 speed auto or 4 speed ?

Hi there I have a 1999 w210 e320 and have been trying to replace my shift module. Underneath the "1" position on the base of the module there are 3 electrical connectors. I got the top one out, but there are 2 others on the bottom that I haven't been able to take off. I can't see or feel any release tabs and I don't want to break it. Do you know how to take off those connectors so I can change the module?

you'll have to trace the wire back from the starter through the harness . Mid 1990s Mercedes had issues with deteriorating engine compartment wiring

I have a 2009 c300 and it has problems going into gear. .if I wiggle it around it will slide into gear. .once I get it into gear is pretty much fine for the day. .but once I don't drive it for a while it's hard to get back into gear any suggestions on east this could be.

tanya lovett It sounds like the bushing is deteriorated, or even gone from the shifter linkage. The part is about $3, and is a very similar repair to the one in the video ( except I made my own bushing as a temp. fix in this video) your center console is a bit different to remove...most people will change them from under the car, which requires no removal of anything, just the inconvenience of crawling under and jacking up the car

the shifter won't move out of first gear if the battery is dead.. there is an electronic lock.. charge the battery with the negative battery cable removed and the key out of the ignition.. make sure the key is not in the ignition when the negative cable is reconnected

HELLO. URGENT PLEASE CAN YOU HELP ME. I’ve got the same car. I pressed on the foot break hard and I SNAPPED the thick cable underneath that drags the mechanical neutral switch 🤯 I don’t need to repair it. I just need to find a way to permanently pull on the cable under the steering column or in the selector WITHOUT taking apart and taking apart - I see lots of people asking how to take the push bolt lock 🔒 out of the selector- but there must be lots of people like me who got a perfect selector just broken cable. Thankful

usually stuck in park is due to a faulty brake light switch . The switch will unlock the shifter once the pedal is pressed .

Hi names Jason - I have a 2000 c280 sport and couldn't get into the trunk due to a dead battery,after doing the usual of charging it and everything still couldn't get in even after hooking up a new battery outside the car,now i can't even turn the key in the ignition. Jason Blakely did you try the key in the trunk lock ? I'm assuming you did, and like most it was prob stuck... spray wd40 up in it and push the metal key in and out a few times every day until it unsticks.. If it isn't stuck , but the trunk sill won't open , it is likely there is something not allowing the white button on the trunk lid to close.. this is the signal for the light to go on in the trunk, to light up the red led on the trunk button on the console (is yours lit up ?) and to diengage the button from opening the trunk. So that little white push pin button on the trunk lid can cause a major problem.. I know I had a suitcase strap block it from closing and had to remove the rear seats in my CLK to get into the trunk. There is a positive power post in the engine bay on the passenger side on top of the wheel.. it is under a small rectangular black cap .. negative is obviously any good solid chassis connection. I think the key needs to be resynced . Will your other doors lock/ unlock with the remote ?

+Andy Yousif If everything in the shifter feels normal, it isn't rattling around or anything . Will it shift into neutral park or reverse ? if so,then your transmission has gone into limp mode.. it has detected an issue and to protect the transmission from further damage it is locked in low gear. Is there an ABS oe ESP light on ? check engine light ? or will the shifter simply not move out of the first gear position.. If it is stuck in that position and can not move forward at all.. then something has fallen down inside the mechanism and is blocking it

Thanks for the reply, I can shift to R N or D, but once in D, I can only go to N, and the only way I can go back to P is if I move the car forward a food or 2. Also my digital disply on dash is blank, it usually displys the position of the gear for example D. Also when in D, I should be able to move the stick to left for gear # 3, 2 & 1, this function is gone.

sounds like either the transmission control module.. or the electrical connector to the transmission (big cable at the front of the oil pan ) has a leaking seal and the connector is contaminated by fluid.. Best to have the transmission codes read by a mechanic with a mercedes "star" scanner though, just to be sure before replacing anything.. although you can check the electrical plug to see if there is any fluid in the connection when you unplug the round connector to the front of the transmission.. once unplugged, any sign of fluid would likely be your problem.. replacing it is about a $20 part and a 15 minute job if it is leaking here is a good video showing replacement of the connector kzread.info/dash/bejne/g6qr2sd8qZvegrQ.html

I encountered the same problem recently..and figured out an easy fix. pop the trim piece that covers the top of the shifter gate off..then find a thin square of rubber that will fit over the hole..glue it over the hole.. Since it is rubber you can push it aside if you need to manually release the shifter, but it will bounce back

+jaeski33 check all the electrical connections on the shifter unit..if one comes off it can get stuck in limp mode as it will think there is a transmission problem ..will it go into park or reverse ?

+fupabox Yes, it goes into Park & Reverse fine. I have better success when i shift into standard mode instead of regular "D" drive mode.

+fupabox from the gear shifter? I changed it from inside the car and sprayed the connectors with dialectic cleaner. I will check them to see if they're secure.

sounds like the shifter shaft bushings that connect the transmission to the shifter are worn out,, unless I'm reading your post wrong.. the car would go into reverse no matter what gear you put it in, and now it won't go out of park ?

yes exactly!! I did an ATF fluid drain and after I put everything back together the shifter was really hard then after it went into reverse, all gears (R, N, D, 3 and 2) are giving me reverse.

Jorge Alamilla Make sure that you didn't over or under fill the transmission.. they are very sensitive to fluid level.. The transmission is electronically shifted except for park reverse nuetral and drive, so the only thing that can keep it in reverse is the shift linkage.. the bushings are available at any benz dealer for around $2

you have to do it from under the car ... very little room, but doable with a lot of swearing involved

just attach the electrical connections to it and press the brake pedal ..that will release the shifter . Later models have a small flap at the bottom of the shift pattern to insert a small screwdriver or ignition key and release the lock

+Edesio Mandelli the interlock between the brake pedal and shifter isn't working..which transmission do you have ? your e320 can have 2 different automatic transmissions in 1996 ..do you have the W/S switch ?

Hello, my Mercedes c280 (w202) automatic. When accelerating thoroughly, when I stop I try to place reverse and park and not shift speed. However if you move in D, 3 and 2.
