MEN IN BLACK: ALIEN ATTACK Tailor Alien Mockup

Ойын-сауық

All major theme park attractions have "mockups" during production, to help figure out particular effects, scenes, and sight-lines. For the finale of MIB, one of the three possible endings to the ride is the high-scoring "Tailor" alien, who is busy constructing your MIB suit (but isn't quite ready, exclaiming "it'll be ready next Wednesday!" -- which is actually my voice in the ride). In order to determine the proper design, movement and placement of the multi-tentacled character, we made a tabletop model that demonstrated its range of motion, lighting reveal (including the scrim wall that conceals it), and vehicle sight-lines, shared with Universal executives and with the character design vendor, Advanced Animations. I made this video on March 2nd 1999, and my technical & design team for the mockup were Production Designer Jimmy Pickering, Scenic Art Director Mary Lamm-Kaleta, Character Art Director Desiree Soto-Vaughn, Creature Designer Neville Page, Set Designer Erik Requejo, Facility Design Manager Jay Pecotte, Design Manager Mike Gordon, and Project Manager Jeff Smith.

Amazing to see something visualized to reality like this! I'm so used to seeing the real thing that it's hard to imagine when you were doing these tests it didn't actually exist yet!

Thanks for sharing this. Really glad you chose to document the process for creating this. Could tell everyone was getting punchy with the whole Pee Wee Herman riff.
