MEN COLLECTING DOLLS + TIPS FOR DEALING WITH HATERS

Ойын-сауық

I have had a lot of male young adults reach out to me about how they should handle people who criticize them for collecting dolls because they are men. In this video, I address how I feel about this + give you tips and tricks for dealing with people who want to criticize you. Remember, never give up on your dreams. Do not let anyone live your life for you. The most important opinion is YOURS!
To all the boys out there: NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DOLLS.
No matter what you do, there will always be people out there who want to criticize. In my experience, it usually means I am doing something right! The only opinion that matters is your own.
What anyone says about you has everything to do about them and nothing about you.
Keep creating magic. Haters like Nellie Oleson gonna hate, but you’re going to keep doing extraordinary things.
AMEN!

Collecting is a personal experience. If you love something and it makes you happy then do not feel ashamed or bad about it. If people don't understand, that is is their hang up and not yours. I am a male who has been collecting dolls since the 90's and I have never felt the need to explain why I like the hobby. I enjoy it and I love it! That is it. It gives me satisfaction and brings me a lot of joy. To all the men out there be proud and embrace who you are and what you love. This is what makes the world go around.

Well said Rachel, I grew up in the 80’s and loved dolls before I could speak! I was always made to feel ashamed of it, I was even taken to the doctor to see why I liked “girls toys”.As an adult I collect dolls and sew and make for dolls and it’s only been the last five years or so I felt even semi comfortable saying I had this hobby. I actually found it harder than coming out as gay! Thank you for raising awareness for all the men and boys who find magic in dolls. 😊

Thank you Rachel for discussing this topic. I live in the Netherlands, where you are free to be yourself. But unfortunately there is often a negative reaction when I say that I collect antique dolls. And I always have to defend myself that I collect dolls and not play with them ... because that would go too far for some. Greetings Mark

Thank you for this video Rachel ! Even as a 63 year old fairly recent doll collector I have had to deal with the haters. More haters than supporters. I have been told that I am crazy !! Dolls are creepy !! Why are you wasting your money !! Let me tell you something......dolls absolutely are LOVE. They bring joy and smiles into my life everyday !! . I even got very creative on how I display my collection. I have an adorable 400 sq ft. apartment and all my dolls are with me. Yet.....if a guest comes over...they don't see a one !! I use bins under my bed for clothes. My closet and one built in shelf is for my doll museum. Lovingly displayed so I can enjoy each and every one and I don't have to deal with judgement and criticism when people come over. The only piece missing is my Grandmother's vintage dolls house which would take up 1/2 my space so it is in storage til I am ready to move into a larger place. For all the doll lovers and collectors....no matter what gender race age....we are all part of a very special group full of LOVE !! I stand with you and am proud of you ! ❤❤❤

I truly agree completely with your statement Rachel. No matter your age, gender, sexual orientation, you should collect whatever you like and what makes you happy. To me dolls are beautiful works of art. I've been collecting dolls for years n love displaying them as if I would display porcelain figurines. There are people who are very insecure, unhappy, and jealous and love to put people down to make themselves feel good. I call them a bunch of kill joys. They don't want you to suceed in your businesses or careers. I say life is very short and you should collect whatever makes you happy and live your life to the fullest.

Great video!💕💗💕💗💕💗 I'm a Doll Collector. I also like to restore dolls, especially rerooting and repairing hair and styling. I am also a Brony. I remember when the very first line of ponies came out and Butterscotch is my all time favorite💗💗💗 Doll Collecting is a fun hobby. Taking care of them to me means alot because they are like my babies. I've never had the opportunity to become a parent but this is close enough. They just being joy, peace, and happiness and a sense of magic that Ive always carried with me since I was young,....so long ago, Lol! Im pushin 50. But my Doll Collection, and that also includes my precious Teddy Bears have kept me young at heart. And its my world. My magical world that nobody can take away from me. Because I believe some guys don't have to follow that rule of conventional society and do whats expected of men and only do manly things. Its just ridiculous. I say follow your heart💕💗💕💗💕💗💕💗

Thank you for the great video Rachel :-) I´m a male collector, I´ve been collecting dolls since I was about 40 years old, so that is about 13 years. The most important advice for young collecters, is to remember as Rachels say, that people, who are happy with themselves and their lives, don´t have the need to critizise other people, only unhappy and jealous people do. If you live at home and don´t get support from ypur family, try to find people that support you. Maybe you have a family member somewhere that will understand you, and let you be you. Focus on the day you will be able to get your own place to live, where you can do as you please. Until then find groups and friends online, that support you. On Facebook, there are groups focused on, and with male doll collectors. When things are tough and seems unbearable, remember that it will not last forever, and at some point you will be able to leave those haters behind, Take care. Hi from Thomas

I enjoy do photography/taking pictures. I wish I started when I was younger. Never too late to enjoy things that bring me happiness. Thank you for this message! It's very heart-warming. I bought Star Wars dolls by Hasbro 2-3 years ago and my cousin said that's weird. That put me and off I return them to the store. Im a 23 tears old muslim male collecting dolls. At first my family did not understand why i collected doll but with times they understood. I collect dolls because i love miniature dresses and makeover. My relative would criticise me or my colleague will give me that judgy looks. But tbh as a queen myself, i would ignored them and brush it off. I just told them “my money, my problem. If do not like do not befriend with me”. No human can stop me from collecting dolls especially in singapore as mostly are close minded. It really help. They will leave me alone. Im proud taking picture of dolls in public. Of course some will give me that looks but i bron with a thick skin and elatic heart. I hope my experience help some men who are still scared to collect dolls. Do not be scared. As long as you do not hurt people its find. Its a hobby. Ask the people who criticise you, “what are your hobby? If they says anything etc, tell them back that same goes to you. Dolls is an art. We appreciate the most minute details. I mostly collect dolls for make over and sew my own dress and post picture. Dolls are mini human to me. A perfect mannequin. Thats makes me collecting dolls.

I love this video. Thank you for posting this Rachel. I made my first repro Bru in 1995 at the age of 15 and have been collecting antique porcelain dolls for years. I've never paid attention to the haters and it's paid off for me in my business as a knitwear designer. You have a HUGE male following and I appreciate all that you do. :-)

Hi Rachel, it’s Jeff B. Your fb friend. Liked this video. The discrimination and stigma comes from inside the doll community also. I collected dolls for years by myself. I had bought some issues of Doll News. So I contacted the UFDC to possibly join a local club. After months went by with no contract from a potential club. I called UFDC again. I eventually got into a club. Three years in I was nominated for club VP. On a field trip with my club I learned something that really deeply upset me. A handful of the members never wanted me in the club. They used club funds to do a criminal background check on me. One even said they would trust me around their kids because I might harm them. It’s ugly that this happened. Those people left the club after I became VP. I’m not bitter about it. I want that to be known. It just shocked me to my core that there are such hateful people even in our doll world. I’m still in the club. My happiness and success I smear in their faces. lol

My wife and I started collecting dolls 2 years ago. I am 53 and I am proud of our doll community we have for support and love of dolls. When I am out by myself I get alot of strange looks when I am looking at dolls. All I can do is laugh cause they don't understand the happiness inside of me when I am doing something I love. Let them have their opinions, first off your opinion of dolls is the onyone that matters. We all need to follow deep inside what makes each individual happy. When I was a teen I used to help my mom make the dolls and put them together while she crocheted the outfits. It was one of the best times and memories with my mom no one will ever take away. Enjoy what you love and don't let anyone take that from you. Love yourself and love your dolls.

And Michael just stepped In and give you good and kind advice. But you are right about the haters. They unfortunately will always with us. We just need to focus on our own path, toughen ourselves up a bit, and be kind as we travel down that path. And there is no opinion better then our own!!! 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

I'm a 28 year old heterosexual male and I've always been a sucker for cute dolls and stuffed animals. Though I have little interest in collecting either, I can't tell you how many times I've felt my heart melt when I see one. And I really don't care what other people think. I don't feel a need to follow strict gender roles, and I wish more people felt the same way. Just realize that haters gonna hate and ignore them. "You have to be yourself. Stay true to who and what you are, and if people still like you, that's great. If they don't, that's their problem." -Sting

Thank you! I collect anime ball jointed dolls and anime cotton dolls. A lot of my peers have made fun of my hobby. Feeling emasculated was definitely a struggle for me at first but after a while, I just said "to hell with what people think". There are many worse and more dangerous hobbies out there. just keep in mind that as long as collecting dolls makes you happy, nothing else should matter. Never feel ashamed to do what brings you joy

It's human nature to collect things, be it dolls, soft toys, miniature cars, ornaments, cards etc etc the list is endless. Just because the odd few view you as a square peg in a round hole, doesn't mean you having to squeeze yourself into that hole to please another's perception of what you should be doing. Often the basis of this harsh criticism and bullying is simply jealousy. The best thing I've found over the years is to lead by example. I've always loved dolls, when I got older, I began to collect BJDs, I love the flexibility these dolls give me. I found a whole new community relating to these dolls, I learnt so much from other BJD collectors that now I can make my dolls eyes, do my own re-stringing, make wigs, and clothing, do face ups and simple mods and repaires. You can follow other collectors dolls, share yours through Instagram or You Tube. It's important to find your people. No matter what you collect, there are other people who also do it. Often you will find that reaching out to the community for advise and support, will help you though the bad times, and teach you to cope with the idiots who think they can bully you. I have quite a few Internet friends, we laugh, cry, share, give or take advise and help by simply being there. As you get older, you develop the abilities you need to defend what you want to do in life. Until then, fellow collectors, regardless of age, sex, race or religion will always, being willing to help. There will always be that small percentage of people who hate to see others happy. My advice is learn quickly to disregard what they say, treat it with the contempt it deserves, and quite often, they will eventually leave you alone. You will often find Doll Collectors, collect many different kinds of dolls, as I do.

Dear Rachel - I stumbled on this Video - and you are SUCH a lovely kind person with a BIG heart. I wish I’d met people like you in my life, but sadly I never did. I’m afraid as a child I could never do or be what I really wanted; I never counted - still don’t. I look back, and I have always been unwanted, unloved, and alone. I have always loved and cared about people - but never had any of it in return. I’m on nobody’s list, in nobody’s thoughts; I feel I’ve just been ‘’in the way’. Tears were rolling down my cheeks earlier tonight, because I was looking back and thinking just how clearly and just how much it has been so obvious that I’ve never really counted to anyone. So I’m glad people like you are out there that would never do to others, what the world and people have done to me. I should never have been born really. God Bless you for your kindness to others. xx

Being male collectors can have its challenges. İf you are paying your way through life then y"our" income is your "business" what one spends their money on. İ earn my way. Yes yes yes you're an inspiration.❤❤❤❤.

I'm 56 so I have had dolls like ornament since I was 10 or 11. All the time in my home are at least two dolls in some part of my living room even when I was married (3 times) . Still when I go to one of those Antiques store I look for dolls. I don't keep all dolls with me sometimes mostly women ask me for a doll I give it. And some friends (mostly women) come to me with a doll as a gift 😂. Don't worry about people opinions just I want to say , People like us there are not too much We are so special in fact I don't only collect dolls I talk to them 😂

Great video. Boys are parents too whether it is doll children or not. My son is a great dad and my sons had dolls, stuffed toys and lots of toys. Isn't the creative director for Barbie Will Farrell? LOL Someone posted a Golly Woggle doll on a Facebook doll group and there was so much controversy and horrible comments and slurs back and forth. Sad a doll can make people such angry - haters. Watching your videos about Jonathan Green made me wish I could find such a wonderful man. My younger brother and I love dolls but our middle brother threw out my younger brother's big Raggedy Ann and Andy and my mom's composition doll she had from her childhood. I bought a composition doll similar to my mom"s right after our mom passed. My younger brother likes shopping with me for dolls and toys. Our middle brother watched too many Chuckie movies I think and I think he's afraid of dolls possibly. There's no opinion more important than my own. And also what you said dolls are LOVE. There is a couple on KZread and the guy wears makeup and wonderful flamboyant clothes and was never attracted to men and I think was a virgin. He met a young lady who had only slept with woman but she is now in a relationship with him. They are a beautiful happy couple. It is good society is changing because why should men and women only be able to dress or have personalities defined according to what society says is acceptable for one sex or another. I had to wear dresses to school in 1960s but we moved to a more modern town in the late 1960s and then a girl asked me why do you only wear dresses and being able to wear pants was great especially for the jungle gyms, hot metal slides, etc. The world does change.

Wow, your comment is a rich tapestry of doll love and social commentary! It's amazing to hear about the doll journeys in your family and how toys can reflect societal change. The world is indeed evolving, and it's exciting to see the boundaries of traditional gender roles blur. Isn't it fantastic that the world of dolls offers a little microcosm of that larger transformation? Dolls truly are LOVE, and they offer something for everyone. Thanks for sharing your perspective! 🎀❤️ Warmest wishes, Rachel 🌟

Absolutely, embracing what brings you joy is so important, no matter your age or gender. For someone in your position, here are a few tips: Start Small: Share your passion with close friends or family members who you know are open-minded. Their support can provide a confidence boost. Online Communities: Sometimes it's easier to find like-minded people online. Platforms like KZread, Facebook Groups, or even Reddit can be great spaces to share your passion openly. Educate: If met with skepticism, calmly explain what doll collecting means to you. The more people understand it, the less judgmental they'll be. Own It: Confidence is key. The more assured you are about your own interests, the less room it leaves for others to question it. You're Not Alone: Remember, you are part of a broader, vibrant community that's enriched by its diversity. Every member brings something special to the table, and that includes you! Keep being you and loving what you love! 🌟 Best, Rachel and the VDC & Turn of the Century Doll Shop Team

Thank you, Rachel, for another inspiring video. I'm not sure if you'll get to this post since it's from an older video, but I appreciate the encouragement. You mainly refer to the younger male collectors, but I am an older male collector. I didn't start until after I retired from teaching (30+ years). I am now 61 and have collected a large number of Annette Himstedts, Philip Heaths and other similar artist dolls. They make me happy and are nice to come home to (although Lilly, my cat, is #1). At first I was a bit concerned about what my siblings would think (one brother and one sister) but they are fine with it. And I'm at the point now where I don't really care what others may think. As you said, we need to be true to ourselves and do what makes us happy. Thanks again for your support and encouragement.
