I got a weird DM on Instagram last night and thought about it a bit so I want to clarify- The point of this video is that the concept of “luck” isn’t really real and you can apply this to your own life. This isn’t some personal project to change your perception of me- it’s just meant to tell you that you can also have the “luck” you’re seeing me have if you put in the work. Good things to those who wait but also good things to those who put in the work. If you think making a video explaining how to give yourself the highest possible odds is somehow entitled then I don’t know what to do :/ I’m fully aware not everyone can drive or go often, that’s not necessarily the message. The video is meant to make you understand that my thrift hunts aren’t some mythical, impossible thing- merely that I am human and live in a normal city and am thrift hunting the same way you can. I’m not super good at articulating myself so I think the point was lost.

Sure, the video was in a rambling style, but I think your point comes through fine in it for anyone really listening. You even gave examples of how a lack of mobility or location was limiting for you at different times. Some people just want something to be mad about and then project their frustrations onto. 🤷‍♀️

I would need a cohost but my work ethic means that I do things at the most random intervals and will be REALLY frustrated if someone doesn't want to do it at the exact time that I do... so it's something that I think could only work if someone lived near me... or Brett was the cohost but I don't think he would want to be involved

So, I used to shop Salvation Army frequently because my mother had a connection there and I used to shop while she was meeting with people. I would occasionally find something neat but never anything -amazing-. Except one day after an overnight shift at work, Mom picked me up to run errands before going home and I requested we stop there just for a minute so I could stand up and walk so I wouldn't fall asleep - I walked over to toys, obviously, and found an entire giant bin of 1980s Barbies in almost mint condition, with their original clothes. $1.99 each. I needless to say bought most of them.

My tip would be to look into nerdy/geeky adjacent stores that sell used items. In my area we have a few comic book shops that also sell old toys and frequently get in Barbies, though I haven’t seen ant other doll lines yet. Kids consignment stores also sell toys/dolls. I actually used to work at one and was able to take home some Winx dolls that way!

this video was really eye opening! I use to do the same thing. Say something like "you're so lucky!" but I didn't realize it was only the highlights that were shown (of course you wouldnt post about a trip where you didn't find anything). I go so rarely, I have zero luck so I am totally going to use some of these tips! Thank you so much! Excellent information in this video

I'm jaded when it comes to thrifting. If I luck into something, cool. If I'm in the area and have time to kill cool. Keep it fun. Too many scalpers and pickers killed the fun of finding a hidden treasure.

My city has a semi-annual doll show, it's pretty great. Yeah, I end up spending more than I would at a thrift store or flea market, but I ALWAYS find something I really want. It took me a long time to discover it though, I randomly saw a flier advertising it when at a completely different event held at the same venue lol. I have not had very good luck in my area at second hand stores, but Flea markets work out sometimes.

I never even thought about the basement thing but that makes so much sense! You made a lot of great points, and I didn't know about the Goodwill auction thing. I went to a Goodwill in my town, now it makes sense why they had no dolls. And you're so right about people needing to put in the work. Dolls have legs but they're not gonna walk to your house 😂

Hey, watching some older videos today. Good subject. I don't have many good thrift stores in my area. My Goodwill never ever has dolls, of any kind or doll houses, accessories. Nothing ! And I always thought it was odd. I did just recently find a thrift store I didn't know about & they had some dolls, so yay !

Same strategy with thrifting applies :) Just look often and use vague search terms like "doll" or "brat doll" or "monster doll" etc. Remember that YOU are the expert and most sellers that have good deals do NOT know what they have. Also gosh I know exactly what you mean. Went through the same!

Boy can I relate to this video!! I always say if I had a doll for every time someone told me how lucky I am at finding dolls I’d have the most in the world lol 😂 I get…. you get lucky daily I also get how California must be the best doll place ever 😆 I just say I WORK MY BUTT OFF TO FIND DOLLS LOL truly! I go out daily! I do at least 3 Savers a week and do 2 swap meets ( aka flea markets ) every single weekend. If you go enough and you put yourself out there you will find dolls. Not every time even I have bad trips to the thrift store but my odds of scoring are incredibly high, you just have to do the work:)

I’ve started doing more to look for dolls in thrift stores. Everything is usually slim pickings around me, but every once in a while I come across a good find. Recently I found an OMG big wig from the winter line for $2. She still had the core pieces to her outfit and shoes, but was covered in goop with matted hair. She had clearly been well played with and loved. I managed to clean, sanitize, and detangle her and she looks wonderful now. 🥰

I regularly check the dumpsters at my apartment. I've found all sorts of reusable stuff in there. It kinda makes me mad at all of the good usable stuff people just toss in the garbage instead of donating it to a thrift store or trying to find someone that wants it. One of the Barbie houses I have in my doll room I found next to the dumpster at my apartment. There was literally nothing wrong with it except for some kid stuck stickers on one side.

So as I was listening to this today, I went to try Facebook marketplace on a whim because I’d never thought of looking there before. I found a huge lot of omg tots along with a few of the teen dolls. New the collection probably cost at minimum $2000 and I got it for $300. I haven’t looked through it in detail yet, but I know at a glance that it’s got multiple tots and dolls that would super expensive for me to try and get now. I’m going to have a hay day picking out stuff, and then have some very happy nieces and nephews afterwards. Thanks so much for the ideas! 🥰

For me honestly, I'd say you ARE pretty lucky (along with many more) to be around this many places to go to even if you have to drive for hours. In my case, there's none of those here so I'd have to FLY out to the US or whatever country that has these kinds of stores. I have to rely on the small local toy shops (who's toys are marked by $10-20+ more cuz of how small and pretty isolated we are) and I have to rely on online marketplaces - rarely the locals here have any for 2nd-hand sale. Even if someone tells me to just move to a different country to experience all the great deals.. that's just straight up difficult to do especially if you have a collection to transfer over. Transitioning ain't a fun thing💀 Despite all that, I will keep your tips in mind when I do get the chance to travel for vacation!

  • @xCanadensis

    @xCanadensis

    2 жыл бұрын

The point wasn’t to defer anyone calling me lucky, it was a one-off comment that I was explaining the point of the video… it was more to say that almost anyone can replicate the results and I explained how :/ these same methods also apply online. I just don’t like when things are credited to some mystical thing when it’s really not “luck”. I hate that word. Hearing things like, “Oh you’re so lucky you got into ___ for college!” Pisses me off to no end, for example because it removes 100% of my own agency and work to get there. Maybe it’s a difference of how I use the word:/ Telling someone to move to another country to buy dolls is… insane. I’m sorry people have said that to you.

@@xCanadensis I get what you mean. I think there's an actual word for it other than "lucky" but I can't figure it out. But yes omg, I did went on a shopping spree when I went to the US mainland for vacation😂 I guess the perks on living on a small island is that I can save with the lack of toy shops or thrift stores around😆

Gah I completely empathize with being stuck somewhere that isn’t ideal but I’ve never been to that extreme before so I can’t fully understand ;-; I should have been more clear with how uh… these don’t apply to literally everyone. I've gotten tons of Monster High because everyone knows I'm 'THE' collector around, so they'll sometimes even give me some. I live in a small town and will go to all the other small towns near me and pick up. I got 2 disney dolls on fb marketplace this last month, fb itself put them in my feed. I live in a big metropolis and Facebook market place is awful. Everything is overpriced and the well priced stuff - it feels like it sells out in the first 10 minutes of posting. In my city specifically there are 3 thrift stores. 1 has very little toys so I don’t bother. The other has a good amount of dolls and for the past month I have been going everyday but only a few good finds. They also over price at times, like they have lol omg dolls for $13 and they aren’t even complete. The last thrift store has toys (including dolls) but they don’t stock frequently so I only go occasionally. There is 1 that is not too far of a diversion on my way home from work that I am going to be hitting up once a week. My friend works at savers and he hits up 3 savers everyday. He has a lot of good finds and he gives me what he doesn’t want. The one savers he goes too that is closest to his home isn’t that great. He says resellers are there all day long watching the restocks on everything.

I get my hair from dollyhair.com or thedollplanet on etsy! It's nylon which is my preferred hair type due to color availability and texture! There's other sources but they're SUPER expensive.
