All those malls have been replaced with warehouses for Amazon I guess.

Dial A Tape was one of the first video stores my family rented from. It was originally at 7950 Laurel Canyon and can be seen in an early episode of The Fall Guy, however they then moved across the street (North/West corner of Strathern) around 1986. Like you said you would have parked curb side. I remember a carpet store next too. Then I believe it was demolished & the two story plaza that is there now facing Laurel Canyon was built. My parents still have their membership card around somewhere. I clearly remembering renting the first few WWF Coliseum home videos (early 1985) at it's original location. Hope this helps.

Mick's Subs was the bomb. Owner was not the friendliest, but the subs never disappoints. I was in the area is Dec 2023 and stopped and grabbed sub. Little did I know that it would be the last one ever. It was amazing as always. When I was in the area again a few months later, I swung by to grab a sub and was bummed to see the little strip mall was demolished and Mick's Subs was just a memory. At least I got one more in Dec. Sad its long gone.

Yeah, Me And My Now Late Mother Used To Eat There On Occasion, When We Were Living In That GODAWFUL Condo, 5412 Lindley Ave. ENCINO! YECCH!!

I'm an 80s valley kid and didn't realize how many films were filmed in this area, until I grew up and so many of these shows and movie sets started to feel familiar. Love it! Thank you for taking us through memory lane.

Kurt, you are correct! During the 80's and into the 90's, the Promenade mall was a higher end (older person's) mall, anchored by high end department stores like Sak's Fifth Avenue and Bullock's. Even the smaller retail stores inside were specialty stores keeping with the high end theme. There really wasn't much there for teens. In fact, during the early era the theaters and many of the restaurants did not exist until a later remodel in the 90's. In the mid 80's I would occasionally go shop there when I wanted to feel fancy lol....

Pops use to take us to Balboa park to do homework almost everyday depending on the weather we would walk around and feed the ducks. Ended up getting our solid oak bunkbeds at the Barn and sad I never made it to Mics. Everytime I drive around and turn the corner something new is being torn down - what a sad world we’re living in - Gosh how time flies and how I miss the old simple days 😢😢😢😢😢 depressing .

Kinda sad to see the Promenade now. Used to take our kids to the movies, then McDonalds in the mall itself. Also loved California Sushi in the mall.

I couldn’t help noticing your RAD t-shirt. The movie RAD was filmed in my old neighborhood in Calgary Alberta Canada in 1985. I was there when they filmed in Bowness park and at my old high school, you can’t see me but a lot of my friends were visible in the movie.

Saw that movie during my senior year of high school in 1983. My God it’s so nostalgic right down to the Bonnie Hayes song. Always been a Nicholas Cage Fan.

I Remember OHRBACHS In PANORAMA CITY On ROSCOE And TOBIAS West Of VAN NUYS BLVD. Next To The Now Walmart. I Remember On VAN NUYS And CHASE ST. I Wrecked My Then New 1979 CHEVY MONZA There.

I remember that mall as a kid. I bought a skateboard with a radio under it from that mall. I also went to the movie theater there Summer 1992 to see T2 like 3 times.

At that time, in the mid-1970s, that was unthinkable, but I wrote a story about how I had traveled into the future in my sleep, and in the future, malls were dying. Now it has really happened...

You are a futurist, like me!! In 1975, I took a pic of one of the two Porter Ranch horse statues. I took a pic of the one at NW corner of Tampa, and Devonshire, in 1975. I was 18 years old. I took the pic thinking, "one of these days in the future, this statue won't be here anymore". Both of those statues are now located at the Valley Relics Museum, by the Van Nuys Airport. I have not been there yet, but sure would like to go there! I still have my pic of the Porter Ranch horse statue, from 1975!

Hey the building on Ventura and Oakdale was used as the office of Nick Cage’s character in the movie Matchstick Men!

Pretty sure the mall scene from Who's That Girl was filmed at this mall. You can see the old Bob Burns restaurant, which was located around the PF Chang's current spot, and the Wells Fargo building that still stands today in some of the shots. And I believe they walked in through the old Saks Fifth Avenue. Love your videos!!

Did you know that the very first discotheque in the USA, was located at 7245 Canby Ave, and opened in 1975? it was located one block northeast of Sherman Way and Reseda Blvd. It was called the Silver Fox. It actually opened 2 years before the famous Studio 54, in New York. It was later sold to the actor Robert Mitchum, and was called "The Incredible Time Machine". My cousin Lon, lived in Canoga Park in the 1970's. He actually did the promotional posters for it. I am looking at the one that he gave me, right now. Lon is 82, and I'm taking over as the family historian, trying to piece together artifacts to document, quite easily these facts. Lon also did the original logo for Magic Mountain in Valencia. It was only used in 1971 and 72. His dad, 'Doc" Lemmon (pronounced La Mahn) picked the site of Magic Mountain in Valencia, gave it it's name, and was the President there when it opened on May 28, 1971. He was one of the Vice President's of Seaworld Inc. in 1969, and was tasked with locating, and naming this new theme park. I was there on opening day, when I was 13 years old. I remember when the Topanga Mall first opened in 1966. I was 9 years old. We Moved to Porter Ranch in 1965 when it was brand new. We would drive there for shopping. The Northridge Mall did not open until 1971. Keep up your great work, in your unique, and creative way in showing this places! If I was out there, it would be a pleasure to meet you, as you are barely scratching the surface, of historical, and significant events out there!

I didn't go to that mall because it had all the higher end stores I couldn't afford. it just had a whole different vibe to it, like it was for grown ups or something. at least in my experience.

Micks was awesome!! Lots of memories of me and my cousin gettin subs from them in the 90ies. Lots of memories from that amc also! Love your videos but man, so much of the valley is gone!

That old mall parcel of land is now owned by Stan Kroenke, the owner of the LA Rams. Plans are to indeed build their training facilities and headquarters there. They currently practice in thousand oaks on land owned by Cal Lutheran University, which is way out in the outskirts, making the drive very long for players and staff.

I saw Titanic at that AMC as well. I also remember seeing the first Fast and the Furious there and everyone was racing around the parking lot after the movie.

I lived in the neighborhood across Ventura Blvd near Mick's sub from around 1967 till around 2000 and Mick's was called Nick's sub back in the 70s. The whole area is not the same anymore.....

Man I loved the Promenade Mall because of the Macy’s it had. It was so peaceful to shop there especially during the Golden Years of Black Friday Shopping. I kid you not there was one Black Friday where it was just me and my sister shopping in there throughout the early morning hours of Black Friday and got all the deals with no waiting in line. 😂 I got a bunch of Calvin Klein Jeans for $3 and a couple of Oscar De La Renta shirts, sweaters and blazers for $3 - $5. No one went to that Macy’s. 🥲 I also went to that AMC theaters a lot 😂 and yup just like you that is where I saw Titanic. Didn’t know Micks was gone. Their Philly Cheesesteak was ok.

It’s sad to see what has happened to all these malls across the country. I miss Frys Electronics too. 😢

great video thanks Kurt, wish I could help you I lived in North Hollywood when I was 10yrs "1982" but I didn't pay attention what was around, hopefully someone can help you. keep in mind maybe the store was upfront next to the street, then later they demolish it and expended that property so it looks different now, my thought.. thanks I like watching Memories of The San Fernando Valley it sparks my memories sometimes..

Kurt you never ate Micks Sandwich shop? I'm shocked it was a Gem of the Valley like Mulberrys pizza. The steak and onion sandwich was the best !! It taste so clean and perfect. damn I'm about to cry . Even the Jacksons and a lotta famous Celebrities would eat there , Jay Leno ECT..

Can't believe the Promenade is almost all shuttered. I watched Avitar in 3D there in 2009 and shopped at the Barnes and Nobels store too around the same time. Not all that long ago. Crazy

The Topanga Promenade gives me so many memories me and my mom used to wait for my dad after work and go to the Promenade and walk around the mall when it was dead inside only like a few people walking around but this mall was popular in the early 70s but the Westfield Topanga mall which opened up more early was more successful and more popular then the Promenade now they moved the AMC and connected it to the mall the Promenade closed down and now the plan is to make the Rams training camp there.

I moved out of the neighborhood and last weekend went back 6 years later and was surprised to see this. It's such a nice neighborhood seems strange they would leave it vacant for so long. A lot has actually changed in that part of the neighborhood i think. I used to go here for the movies (we had a lot of options now that i think about it)

You are correct. Stan Kronke purchased this mall.

I dated this gorgeous girl in the 90s ate at The Promenade and catch a movie...several over the years. Got married. 3 girls. All grown. Divorced now. So heartbroken to see this place go down like life can be. But I moved on. And old golden memories prevail

Wow, you hit the nail on the head with this one, Kurt! Growing up in Chatsworth and having a dad that worked around the corner from the Galleria, I often visited all the malls you mentioned. The Galleria was the Super Bowl of mall wandering for me in 1987 (remember the "Aahs" gift shop nearby on Ventura?). After that, it was the Northridge Fashion Center, then Topanga Plaza. Going to the Promenade was always torture when my mom would hit Bullocks (meh), but better than nothing. My most vivid memory is briefly choking on a Gobstopper while sitting on a bench in the Promenade, lol. A few content suggestions for the Chatsworth area if you're running low; Rockpointe Townhomes are VERY original, nostalgic and LEGENDARY on Halloween. They lead to Chatsworth Park South, which has a lot of history. The Munch Box is an OG hold out. The Chatsworth Jr Baseball League fields likely also hold 80's memories for thousands of people. I remember going through the long Chatsworth Park train tunnel, at night. I was in it as a train passed through it, now that was surreal!

@@mattd3801 There were cubby holes inside of the tunnel, so that workers could sequester themselves there. I went in there many times, only once, at night. I even timed how long it took to reach a cubbyhole walking, about 2 minutes, upon hearing the evidence of a train coming, about 1 minute, when a train entered the tunnel, less than 30 seconds to run to the next cubbyhole. The tunnel, I think is about a mile and a half long. You can only see both openings in the daytime, if you were at the midpoint apex of it.

The promenade mall was the spot when I was a teenager. It’s probably because it was less popular, but living down the street at the Warner center meant that it gave us a down the street spot to go and smoke a bowl (talking 420 here! Things are out of control these days, why I just wanted to clear that up!)

The mall was an eyesore as it was slowly dying from all the way back from late 80’s

I use to be a valley boy, I grew up in the San Fernando Valley. I use to go to all of those places that you featured in this video.

Funny to think we might’ve seen Titanic in The Promenade around the same time. I also went against my will

I didn't know there was an ice skating rink in the Promenade. I only remember the one in Topanga Plaza. Interesting! I will admit I too almost never went to that "older person's" mall!

My wife would remember better, but I think we mainly went to the Promenade for the movie theater. Like you, it was mainly Northridge or Topanga. Sometimes Fallbrook or the Sherman Oaks Galleria.

Twenty years ago the Promenade had expectant mother's parking spaces.

Used to work at Warner Center & man so sad to see that so many of the places I’ve been to or just driven by are closing down. Drove by Laurel Cyn. & Victory yesterday, saw almost all the shops are closed down & the movie theater too. Only gold gym still open. Anyway nice video, will save it to watch when nostalgia hits again 😅 I knew that building from Save by the bell looked familiar. Seems they always have filming or construction going there. Hope they don’t remodel it either.

I opened my checking account at the BofA in Warner Center in the 80’s. I still have it.

That mall had all the high end stores like Gucci, LV, and other high end stores.

The movie theatre you said you could see Rocky Horror Picture Show, could you also see Heavy Metal or Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation? We used to have a theater here in Victoria that showed those movies!

Kroenke, owner of the Rams, bought that shopping center along with the old Blue Cross building across the street. They are going to build the LA Rams practice facility there. Not sure why they selected that spot since it’s the hottest part of the valley in the summer and early fall. Only thought is they want to commercialize the facility and generate revenue from it. The BlueCross parking lot has already been demolished. Anyway, my two cents.

I love old malls. Malls made me want to be a landscaper, that and also college grounds where my dad worked. My local mall hung on for a long time. Just a couple years ago I took my kids for Christmas and it was packed, they had a little Christmas train that was big enough for adults. It was great. But it’s down to flea markets now. Once they lost the pet store I didn’t really care to go anymore. I’m pretty sure the Galleria still exists in Houston. That was a good one. I know in Russia the malls are still going strong and I guess Australia too, that mall seemed pretty busy where that tragedy happened.

Spent many an hour at the Topanga Plaza. Anyone remember the rain fountain feature? Pretty cool back in the day.

The rain fountain! Man, As a 5 year old I used to think it was some trick of light because I realized water cannot move that slowly. Turns out it was oil that slowly ran down a wire cable and was pumped back up to the top. It's mentioned in one of this channel's earlier San Fernando Valley videos.

I know that you previously briefly touched on it - and it's not related to 80's stuff - but I'd love to see a full video about My Name is Earl filming locations. Such a funny show with a positive message.

Grant High School was used for many films and TV shows. One of the worst movies ever made "Lovely But Deadly" (it's on YT) was shot at Grant in 1981 and used students as extra's. Last 3 minutes shows the buildings you were in front of in your video. Keep up the great work Kirk!

@ 17:34 U show Grant High School. In 1981-83 'The Greatest American Hero' was filmed there. I think T.J Hooker was filmed there for an episode too.

Man so much is wrong about this video. I won't take a bunch of time to correct many things, but if you looked across from the promenade you would see the blocks of land fences off and the demo taking place. The new Chargers area is massive! It will take many blocks and a couple years to complete. The Fry's is stuck in development, but is supposed to be a massive housing complex. As for Topanga, that Reno took place years ago, and they moved in many high end retailers like Tiffany and Cartier to name just a couple. Since Westfield owned both properties they just moved the AMC over there along with other stores.
