i did lampwork in highschool and cracking seemed to be a recurring theme if there was any air getting to it. rather than just a vacuum, i bet this woulda been a cake-walk if you buried the bottle in some sand to absorb the heat. it may take longer, but it would cool MUCH slower allowing you to put the hole in it, and not have hairline cracks. i looked up your video while thinking of plans for my day of the dead tequila bottle bong. ENJOY

you may get less thermal shock if you put a heat lamp above and below the bottle so the whole thing is hot to start then you could turn off the propane with less fear of it cooling too fast.

LOL... no but that's one heck of an idea! But I would suggest a Pinot Noir for that, instead of a Malbec. ;)

use a wine bottle with a dimple on the bottom where it goes up inside the bottom of the bottle a little, and just hold it ontop of a steel bar or something and tap it on the ground.... glass waterfall....

you don't need to. You need one of those bottles (like the old sobes) with a little ratchet shaped indentation on the bottom. You put a nail in the corner and whack it with a hammer, harder and harder, until it knocks the inside out of the corner of that little dimple.

Not really since I had a vacuum on it. It would implode, but not explode. But that's just a theory, hence the reason I had the safety glasses on. ;)

I've since learned you can do it in the oven. About 350F and let it "slump" and it won't char the label. Takes several hours and then just shut the oven off and let it cool down slowly. (i.e., don't open the oven) In total about 24 hours. But this just produced a "flat" bottle, not the same as I was going for in this vid.

Thanks - Does it bend much or can you control the bend if it is laid on some supports, like pins/metal tabs or such? also another problem with oven is it may not be big enough for 350mm x 760mm glass panes. I do have some smaller paynes so could try them

you have to slowly heat up the entire bottle. other wise it gonna break.

Hahaha, _really_ Jim? If you had watched this video in it's entirety you would have noticed that the bottle, in fact, did NOT break. Even though your advice about glass may in general, be correct, waiting until you have seen the final outcome of a video before making final predictions seems to be of paramount importance if you wish to avoid appearing to be a dumbass in the future...
