i think a smaller crucible with broken up glass will get a better flow,plus make sure its clean of other materials.i really like how you had two propane tanks heating it up,unfortunately i think it might have created an excess because there wasnt enough glass to keep hold of the tempature to keep it liquid because of the extra space in the oversized crucible.

I work in a bronze foundry and my boss (casting for 50+ years) says he used to use glass bottles to clean up the molten bronze in the crucible

now you can make molten glass try to make you own prince Rupert's Drops p.s maybe try it with liquid nitrogen and see if it makes an diverence compared to water.

Farhan Kanapiah glass is made from silica sand, and a bunch of chemicals, not just sand.

Maybe try having a metal pan on a grill to keeo it warm then get a blowpipe to blow the glass and use the pan or something else to shape it and hopefully the grill will keep it warm enough to take shape and not solidify. You could also try having someone with a blowtorch on the glass itself to keep it heated. I wanna see you make somethin outta glass its got me excited!

When blowing glass you use wet newspaper to shape it (while wearing a heatproof glove obviously)

When you do the casting, make sure you keep the glass hot and moving! You can find glass blowing vids on KZread :)

I have softened bottles in a backyard fire pit. They softened enough to push into other shapes with a long stick.

I make neon signs which entails heating glass tubing to a softening point in various burners to bend it to shape. The burners used are either natural gas or LPG and air which is more than enough to melt soft glasses but not quite enough for borosilicate.

don't think that's possible with only that forge l. You would have to super heat it to about 2000 degrees for it to melt and stay melted for enough time to make the drop. But if he gets a different one. Deafinetly possible.

Jacob Schweigert sand doesnt turn into glass. Sand consists of different minerals/rocks. Glass needs to be made with very specific amounts of certain minerals, like quartz sand.

You should melt down some glass and then try casting some molten metal on top of it (or vice versa if the glass is less dense) before either solidifies. I'm pretty sure this is how they used to make highly accurate flat surfaces.

Glass is a supercooled liquid. to make flow easily you would need very high temperature and continuously kept hot . The goey mass of glass could have been loaded onto a rod and shaped like they do for handmade candies.. or as you said blowing glass would have been cool too. the bottles are made by blowing method ( if I am not mistaken)

We used a normal Bunsen burner to draw out glass tube to make a pipette in our chemistry lessons, so I knew that a gas fuelled kiln would be able to melt glass. I was a bit disappointed that Veritassium didn’t figure the whole thing out beforehand. Someone with an engineering degree should be able to look up the melting point of glass, the expected temperature that a kiln would achieve and come prepared. But maybe he just wanted to keep it random!

I think if you make a foundry with a poor spout (though this will make the crucible nonremovable) you'll be able to cast glass while it's still fast flowing hot.

Try making a glass knife

Glass can only be molded at very high temperatures. It completely melts/liquifies at approximately 1400 °C to 1600 °C depending on the composition of glass. Glass is made from a variety of substances, depending on the intent of use. Mostly sand, lime and soda are what most glasses are made of.

It pulls like molten sugar it's so pretty 😂 they seem alot alike in terms of how fast it cools and pulls. Alot more viscous obviously

Hey Grant, maybe you could add some soda ash to the glass as you melt it. I've heard that lowers the melting point of glass.

Try alloying glass with aluminum, basically “fragile aluminum”

Perhaps turn your bricks sideways to reduce drop height. Perhaps blocking end might keep the ambient temp from dropping fast. Could use glass panes to still be able to film process

What about pouring molten glass into liquid nitrogen, would it make a super strong Prince Rupert's Drop?

The leidenfrost effect would make it cool too slowly to form a PRD, water has a higher heat capacity, and cools glass _FASTER_ than liquid N2.

Tell him what lol sand does melt into glass I doubt he could reach the temperature to do it as its very high.

i know you have almost 10 million, but you deserve so much more.

we used to melt beer bottles in a camp fire ...this looks like a lot more fun!

InfuriousFlames Gaming unfortunately glass doesn't work like that. There are ways around, but only in a glass studio. I'm afraid that the backyard will not cut it. 🙁 I would actually like to see him try in a studio though!!!
