I just purchased this set- waiting for delivery. I was looking for a jam pack that had maracas, güiros, panderetas and palitos. These are very similar so I got this set; but, had it been a Puerto Rican Jam Pack, I would have gone for that. Should put together Cuban Jam pack to (would be same instruments as PR but with Cuban Flag). For that matter- African, Brazilian, etc… jam packs would sell like crazy- of course, different instruments that highlight specific musical cultures

Last year, I actually submitted 20 various “jam packs” from around the world. They selected one signature pack from the Meinl VivaRhythm Community selection, and I’ve developed applications for those specific instruments to cover almost everything in the various cultural packages. Maybe one day Meinl will receive enough requests to release more specific packs. Until then, “¡Viva Puerto Rico!

I just bought the woodcraft series and i love them. It is very hard to tune them to a certain because each soundbox has its own tone. Hembra d and Macho f sharp. When i am tuning up or down, i always hear that base tone more. However. Hembra in d and Macho in f sharp does'nt sound bad at all

Thirds, d and f , are great. I think you’re hearing the minor/major difference in keys. I really prefer bongos to be tuned to a fifth, c to g , or a fourth, d to g. It depends if I’m tuning them as a solo or ensemble instrument also. In my 5-drum setup, everything is tuned in major seconds, minor thirds, and perfect fourths. I prefer most natural notes, but I also have found attachments to B flat and F sharp. Great to share what we love!

@@JeffHollandSonicArtist i tried to get the macho up to a g but it seemed to be stuck at f sharp. My macho is 7" and the hembra 8.5". Do you think its possible to tune them to c and g? I am aiming for that. Thanks for your help.

Yes, I think it’s possible. The macho may pop and crack a bit as it’s adjusting. I’ve never broken a macho head from playing, but I’ve had a few pull out going for the highest note possible. On some of my bongos, I use a synthetic macho head, and a natural hembra. That helps to achieve the wider Sonic range.

I would make the decision based on what you like to play. Bongos add melody and musicality that is a different approach than the more drum-set-oriented basic cajon beats. Let your playing style help with the decision.
