Sonic Energy Tour, DRUM4WORK, Our World Festival, DRUM234. I hope you find inspiration and motivation here. Keep the rhythms going, and share your experience too! Check out my different playlists. DRUM234 started around 1985, when I began to share my drum lessons with neighborhood friends. I charged half my lesson amount at first in order to find my own training and equipment. Then DRUM4WORK developed about 1994, as I started teaching school residencies based on cultural percussion. Corporate team-building and community outreach programs became a foundation that spawned thousands of successful designs. To date, my programs have a 100% success rate in Communication, Connection, Creativity, Collaboration, and Community. Leading drum circles since 1990, I’ve realized the power of rhythm to bring people together in a joyful way, which inspired our nonprofit OurWorld Festival Inc. Now all this experience comes together in my Sonic Energy Tour. Thanks for watching, subscribing, and sharing!

I'm reading a book on pre-contact mesoamerica and it mentions the usage of turtle shells as a percussion instrument. Googling it brought me here and Hot damn! You really sold it for me. Brilliantly played! Thanks for sharing
Turtle shells were definitely used by many cultures for various instruments. Mesoamerica seemed to popularize their use more than others. I've collected about 7-8 shells that I've put together into a xylophone. I'll try to do a newer (better) video soon. Thanks for watching! I'd love to know the name of the book you're reading.
@@JeffHollandSonicArtist The book is called "Mexico: From the Olmecs to the Aztecs (Ancient Peoples and Places)", by Michael D. Coe and Rex Koontz. Mind you that this isn't a book *about* the usage of musical instruments in mesoamerica; the reference to the turtle shell that I saw is just the caption to one of the pictures displaying a pair of figurines playing percussion. It's been a good read so far, though!
Hey Mr jeff...... I don't know if you remember me... You came to my school Campobello Gramling in sc and you put a spark in my life I wish we could have spent more time with you I really miss playing all these instruments with you.... Also my Jackson Mills and you taught the 5 grade at campobello Gramling and I hope we will meet again god bless you and have a good day
I tried to reply from my phone, but maybe it didn't go through. Thank you for commenting and sharing your experience with me. I really missed Campobello this year, and I hope we get an opportunity to play again soon! Keep your rhythms going!!
Amazing! Check out my work with Mbira Nyunga Nyunga
Hi. I have a DTX 500 that would only sound when I hit them dead centre. so I sprayed contact spray into the snare drum and hey presto, it works and sounds all over. I tried it on the toms but it made no difference. I had one of the toms to pieces and sprayed contact spray all over and no loose connection but still no fix. any ideas for a fix. The pad with the foam over the contact is ib the middle attached to piece that are some sort of white plastic either side like a H configuration
Sorry for my delayed response. I find that pads that have been overplayed might create a space between pad (rubber density) and trigger. I’ve used a bit of tape around a cut-to-size business card, will add some sensitivity. Hope that helps.
Hi Jeff, are these packs available again yet? Thanks!
Let me check with my Meinl rep. We’re always oversold on a few pieces. I’m also trying to convince them to condense the shipping boxes from 12 down to 2, but we’ve been struggling with supply chain issues for years now. Hopefully we’re getting close. This convenient pack has changed my life!
@@JeffHollandSonicArtist Thank you! I'm UK if that makes any odds.
Can I ask why you chose the Nada heads over the synthetic on the bass drums?
The Nada heads are warmer, fuller yet softer, sound. The Boom heads are brighter, higher and louder. I use both in my kits, and I also use different selections for certain requirements. In general, I prefer Nada on the bass drums, and Boom on the djembes. Congas are usually a mix of both. Hope that helps. My apologies for a delayed response.
@@JeffHollandSonicArtistace thank you! What are the mallets you use?
@@thelisteningcalendar one mallet comes with each bass drum.
3:01 that's the one right there, That golden moment sound designers hope for when attempting this
Great memories
Wow😮
Promo SM
Hi! I bought exactly the same, but how do you know which one is G3? Thanks
The largest (lowest) note is G3, and the higher is G4.
Ok thanks a lot 🙏
Very nice
Thank you
So glad you are making these instructional videos!
You are clearly in the zen zone… Wonderful, and thanks for posting.
I try to stay in the zen zone! I need to video it more often.
❤❤❤❤❤
I can't wait to be back ❤❤❤
Love the environment you’re sitting in!😅
Great sample. I hope we get a chance to hear more from this ensemble
Beautiful!
If only everyone could be so in sync with nature like you! So beautiful 😍 such harmony
We all have the option to live in harmony with nature. What’s most challenging for me is to capture those moments on camera to share. I suggest everyone should go sit quietly in nature as often as possible. What’s not in this video is the hour I sat watching and waiting for the right inspiration, and this song was dedicated to the hummingbird migration, with scenic melodies in between. 🙏💗🌀🎶
@@JeffHollandSonicArtist it's perfect ...you captured the beautiful ness of it all 🥰 I hike in the woods & sit door hours sometimes it's the best medicine
I need to give my wife all the credit for filming and editing this artistic video. When I’m inspired by nature, I rarely think about my camera. It’s the medicine in the moment, then we move on. Lori is encouraging the natural connections through the lens, which is her artistic contribution.
💖💖💖
Thank you Freedom! Your inspiration reaches farther than you can imagine.
This is so great Jeff! I've never seen so many hummingbirds like that. Must be the handpan vibes.
The hummers don't mind the music, but they're very scared of sudden movements. When we are still, the migratory route can provide hundreds at peak times. We've tried to record some of these special moments to share. Thanks for watching, and your compliment. That means so much coming from a filmmaker like you!
So very wonderful! Could keep this on rewind/play all day long.
Please do, it will help inspire us to make more videos. And, feel free to share.
Beautiful. ❤️
Thanks Rebecca!
what a great set-up. thanks for sharing your collection with us
Beautiful!! Happy holidays 💖 love all the overtones ✨
Thank you Alison! Happy Holidays!!
SuperB Jeff!
I’m building a new studio now. More videos coming soon! All my best to you and your family. Merry Christmas!
Wow, what a gorgeous sound! You really know how to play this instrument beautifully.
Thank you Carolyn! I'm still learning. Happy to share my progress.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful song. I love your intentionality!
Thank you Carolyn!
Nicely done my friend! 👏👏👏
They're also about 1/10th of the cost of a handpan because their design isn't patented. I can't wait until those things are off patent.
There's been a patent debate from PanArt, who produced the original Hung, but I don't know of any other companies that have even applied for a handpan patent. Prices are based on fine-tuning and experience. Meinl handpans are made by a contracted maker, as many instruments in their product lines. I like the consistency I've found in their tongue drums. The quality is there.
@@JeffHollandSonicArtist I agree. I follow another YTer named Musical Molly Khan who reviews various tongue drums, and some of the cheap ones are pretty much junk. Even a real musician such as her (or you) can't get a good sound out of them. There's no sweet spot on several tongues. And so you get what you pay for. BUT, you are always paying more when a patent is involved. I just don't see the handpan use spreading very fast at those prices. Once it's off patent, which is a 20 year thing with no renewal in this case, hardly a blink in the lifetime of classical music, I think it will take off like violins, guitars, etc. It's not the first instrument to be throttled with a patent, but generally those that have patents are electronic (e.g. a Yamaha keyboard). The handpan may be the first acoustic instrument to be throttled with a patent. It's just sadly...capitalism. But tongue drums sound beautiful, too.
@@ShimmySnail The Hung was invented in 1999-2000, although I'm not sure when the patents were applied, or if they've added to them since then. I'm not sure the patents are valid with many of the countries that are building handpans now. I still don't know of any patents on the tongue drum, as it was an evolutionary instrument made first from recycled propane tanks. I've also hoped both of these instrument groups continue to develop mainstream exposure. There's some amazing developments in the last few years, as to quality and performance capabilities. Thanks for supporting discussions that can help inspire this movement to grow.
A true wizard
thanksTate!
Kinda like you’re wandering through your garden... why didn’t you play those 4shields that are in the center of the vid?
I'm still working to complete that set. There's 3-4 more embossed gongs to add.
Awesome collection!
Beautiful!! Thank you for the vibes <3
Dear Jeff, is your Jampack still available, and if so, also in Germany? I am a social worker at a primary school and would like to use the jampack to boost my current "drum circles" I am offering during some of the breaks. Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm and your efforts you are putting this jampack together!
Hi Balthas, We've sold out here in the US earlier this year, and Germany too as far as I know. It's such a great pack, Meinl oversold the availability by a few months, and due to manufacturing/supply chain issues, we've been delayed another few months. There were a few random drums in US warehouses, and we bought all those to fill long-standing orders. Last I heard, we were expecting new shipments later this year. I'm sorry for the delay. This pack is perfect for your drum circle breaks, and I hope we can fill your needs soon.
Oh hi!! This is Elene Holland. I was ur student in drum class a few years ago. U prolly don't remember me, but I've been pretty busy and I've done my best trying to keep up with ur channel. U don't know this, but I actually play a little bluegrass mandolin and I play the fiddle in a bluegrass band. I will post a link to our first gig
That's awesome Elene! I'd love to hear you play.
@@JeffHollandSonicArtist Ofc!! Search up Ferris C. on KZread and watch some of her more recent videos of our band. She is the mom of a member in our band and she likes posting our videos
Hey Jennifer, I searched Ferris C, but maybe you can send me a link. All I can find on KZread under that search is about lawnmowers and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. 😂 I’d love to check out your videos too!
@@JeffHollandSonicArtist hey!! I didn't realize u'd responded. Here's the link. I also didn't notice this, but Ferris changed her channell name. But anw, here's a link
@@jenniferholland3625 Hey Jennifer! Did you post the link here?
Great Mic. It’s picking up everything crystal clear.
Settin the woods on fire
Very nice.
Undecided to buy them or a Meinl Cajon bongo
I would make the decision based on what you like to play. Bongos add melody and musicality that is a different approach than the more drum-set-oriented basic cajon beats. Let your playing style help with the decision.
I wish they made bags for the yoruba talking drums.
There are definitely cases that will fit yoruban talking drums. I use a Meinl bongo/percussion bag for mine, and I can comfortably fit two talking drums and their mallets. I've also used padded gym bags, and they are much less expensive.
And you as well… 😊❤️👊🏻
Could you please tell us the handpan model? Greetings from Brazil
Saraz Meditation Handpan in C minor. Obrigado!
