I always thought it was funny that no matter how dangerous the jump they never forgot to hit that horn like it was essential to their survival or something.
Jeez... had this too, made my dad drive an hour out of town to get one from another town... loved the hell out of it.
I loved that line of toys as a kid, despite being like 6 or 7 and already recognizing how incredibly off-model everything was. That said, I remember the tires on the General would easily come off, as would the whole axle from the small clips that held them on to the chassis, and those clips could break rather easily, too. And yet, my biggest concern as a kid was that the flag on top was straight-up square.

Sounds racist to me.
Ahh the Mego General Lee....I had to have surgery on wild teeth at age 9, and my reward from that bloodbath was a stop at the toy store to get this toy. It soothed my pain for a short while, but an better metal version of the General LEE (albeit minus figures) came out by ERTL I believe that was super realistic, had the push bar on the front and could jump my neighbors granma's wooden wheelchair ramp all day long and never miss a beat.
Weird. I had the Gen Lee and put that mother through the paces. Later on I painted it black and kitbashed it into a V8 interceptor from Road Warrior. Still have it in the attic at the folks house.
I remember launching mine off the top of the stairs. it would fall apart, but I just popped it back together. I also had the Dukes cop car, which is now mega-rare and worth several $hundred.

I had that one too. Even back then as a 5 year old I could tell the police car was made of plastic even much mire brittle than the General Lee. My General never fell apart ir broke until years later. The flip top hatch hinges finaly broke.
I got that toy for my forth birthday, now my Ertel Die Cast General Lee with functional trunk lid and hood was more fun to play with
I'd like to see you do a video review of the whole Dukes toyline.
Aw man I had one of these. Loved the show as a kid and I believe the car came with Bo and Luke too. It wasn't the best built thing but I remember having a blast with it. Some toys weren't meant to last forever....thanks for the memories!
My husband was telling me this AM how he was doing stunts with his General Lee toy & it shatterd.
I had that General Lee along with several others replicas my favorite s were my Dukes of Hazzard barnbusters toy and my die cast Ertel with opening trunk and hood

That Barn Busters toy was so much fun back then.
I still have my dukes of hazzard toys
lol, I had that toy, but as soon as Knight Rider came out, kit set the General on fire, yea kit did, well that's how I remember it.
I jumped that thing off a fifteen foot ramp. It outlived both of the Duke figures
Even in the thumbnail I could see the plastic and go "Wow, that looks extremely brittle." Then the video plays and a bigger version of the thumbnail is onscreen at 0:37 and I go "Wow, that looks even more brittle somehow"
I live in New Zealand and Mego was rarely distributed in toy stores there. I would love to aquire the boxed set that includes Bo and Duke.
Let me grab my popcorn and 2-liter. I’m here for the comments on this one!....and thankfully I am largely disappointed. Congratulations Retroblasting, you have a classy fan base.
The MEGO General Lee didn't look like a 69 Charger, but rather a 72 or 3 Charger, LOL.

the front looks more like a Buick Wildcat
Re: the cheapness of the General Lee, this was right around the time Mego was going bankrupt. A lot of their later toys suffered from cheap plastic, design features being cut, etc. Even the Micronauts line (one of my all-time favorites) was not immune to some corner-cutting on the later releases. For example: the Solarion was supposed to have an interior lining with a reclined seat, which you can see in the instructions, but the final toy has a hollow interior that the figure clanks around in. You can clearly see snap-tabs on the Solarion's body where the lining should've snapped in. Not to mention all the part molds that got recycled. The Trons come to mind. Mego's big problem was that they tried too hard to make up for missing out on Star Wars. They snapped up all sorts of licenses that ended up being clunkers, and made an ill-fated move into LCD games, and the decline in profits led to cheaper materials and cut corners. Even super heroes and Micronauts could not save them. The Dukes of Hazzard and Chips licenses were too little, too late. By 1981-82, they were pretty much finished.

Weren't they the ones that did the Love Boat, for fuck's sake?
LOL! loved this video! the end was great :D now...I don't know who made it or where my mama bought it, but I had a General Lee that was made in some sort or other of metal. detailed as all get out. it may have been a shelf piece that I just played with not knowing that it wasn't a "toy". either way that thing went the distance. i'd spend whole days building ramps and jumping that joker.

***** well,if it's any consolation to you, mine fell apart too....eventually. lol
My diecast ertl general Lee has held together since 1981
I never had one of these, but my neighbor did. After seeing it, I was glad I didn't! (He managed to break his in less than a week, too!)
My neighbor has a '69 Charger. Light Green Metallic, not orange. No Confederate battle flag on top. But, oh, that familiar horn! I get to hear it nearly every day. She's such a sweet old lady.
i had two metal general lees. figures were not big enough. wanted this so much.
So did this General Lee survive the jump?
I'm a kid from the 2000s and I got a new (at the time) general lee die cast model and I used it as a toy but being very careful. I still have but with more than 50 percent of the plastic exterior items broken
No General Lee was harmed in the making of this video.
I remember the dukes toys by mego and the A team toys by galoob were the cheapest 3 3/4 in I ever had as a kid.. they would literally fall apart within a week or 2.. I remember getting multiple A team 4 figure packs and 2 general lees
I loved that thing! We kicked the crap out of ours with Joes at the wheel. When it died, the Thunder Machine took its place. We also had three NASCAR cars that were the same sort of plastic but without the roof panel and we shoved the Joes through the windshield. The General Lee was so much better.
I loved this toy... I need it now.
AWESOME !
Mine lasted forever...even the figures did, and used to jump the crap out of this toy.
I never usually broke my toys. But whenever kids came over. I was forced to share. And they would open every thing. Every box and play with everything to bits and pieces. So basically all my toys are either in bits and pieces or rarely still intact.
Love the video. I have fond memories of my Mego General Lee -- although it definitely has its shortcomings. I especially dislike the Flintstones-like open floor. I wish the sidewalls of the General were shorter, so that the windows could be taller and maybe -- just maybe -- allow the action figures to be inserted through them. I wonder what a eight-inch-scale Mego General Lee might look like. Their Starsky and Hutch Gran Torino looked pretty cool.
I had 2 of these when I was a kid. One of them had the chrome bumpers, the other had flat grey plastic. I suspect they realized that the chrome was chipping off and failing quickly -- so I believe the later version just had the flat grey.
I recently won two of these on ebay . I think my original car was sold in a family garage sale . Even though it was crap , I still had hours of fun launching it off of our side walk . Come to think of it I may have broken one of the wheels . Still a favorite to this day . that and the pocket action hero's Batman and Robin with the Batmobile . Crap as well but still fun to own . Love your videos . Just subscribed today as well .
I grew up thinking that I was the only one who brought this...none of my friends never even saw a commercial for this.
Mine fell the F apart after one day and I was super careful with toys, and it didn’t even look like a 69 charger!
A kid stepped on mine it was a accident I still had that mangled mess for ages before finally giving in to putting it in the bin couldn't find a replacement no Internet I had the UK matchbox one as well that just got played to death with
Just a good ol boy
you're so young in this video!!!
very cool ... even if the general lee toy sucked I still love the show ... and I play with the 1/25 RC car they made a few years back... now to get batteries for it since your video makes me want to play
LOL I had that when I was a kid. The General Lee actually lasted but the Bo and Luke figures didn't after getting played with way to roughly. :)
i hate saying it but i beat the absolute hell out of my toys as a kid. i was sort of unsupervised and a latchkey kid, my father worked in a small warehouse and would bring these cool empty cigar boxes home sometimes which i kept a lot of my figures and stuff in. but i use to set one of the cigar boxes out in the middle of the yard with a couple Cobra troopers in it like it was a tank or something, and i would throw darts at it to try to knock it over and have the lid open and the figures fall out which meant they had blown up and lost. i also use to stand ALL my figures up on a board and use a rubber band to shoot paper wads at them until only one hadnt been knocked over and they were the winner of the war. its weird really because i was actually a really quiet and well behaved kid and took good care of stuff, other than my action figures, who had to die, a moment of silence for mt brothers in arms.
General Lee vs K.I.T.T. Which show jumped and killed more cars? 😂
Hey RetroBlasting! Maybe you could answer a question that has bugged me since childhood. Why was the shape of the Mego General Lee's body SO far off from what a '69 Charger is supposed to look like? I mean, for a moment let's disregard the oversized tires, the cheap plastic, the extra wide axles, etc. The body lines of the car itself only slightly resemble a '69 Charger. Other toy companies were making General Lee knock-offs that had Confederate flags on the doors, or the number 07 on the car instead of 01, but at least they got the body shape right. Was wondering if maybe there was a copyright or licensing issue with making an actual '69 Charger body that you could put 2 action figures into.

There could possibly have been licensing issues that Mego was trying to avoid. It is also possible that they had this car sculpt either lying around or they could acquire easily it. Mego did a lot of parts recycling in their toys. It is also possible that Mego didn't have the toy so they rushed through the sculpt. Mego was in the midst of financial struggles by this point in their corporate history. Perhaps they were racing to push out product either to save the company or fulfill contracts before they went out of business. By this point, the handwriting was on the wall for Mego. Mego had sold Dukes of Hazzard toys from 1981 to 1982. They would go out of business in 1983.

@@retroblasting Valid theories. Thanks for the quick reply.
very true ... I love the dukes tv show
We all love the General Lee but now because of the flag which was actually never used in war but people just hate the car I'm making a goal so that no General Lee is Left Behind
i had that. i don't remember mine falling apart.js. thanks for the memory tho!!!
Only ever had the Ertl diecast General... thank god, I guess.
You know sometimes you just gotta ask yourself “what would Waylon”
Did your General survive the jump?
I ended up using my General Lee as a COBRA vehicle once The Dukes Of Hazzard stopped being cool. All that battling and chasing against the GI Joe VAMP made it fall apart. Quickly.
I was just looking around. Seems that's the one I had, I def remember the cut out top. I think those may have been repo sticklers, saw the for sale on eBay and noticed the white frame too. Dang you for triggering me missing a toy from my childhood. Infourtunitky the only toys that made it are my GIJO vehicles(can't find the dang figures!!!?)
I knew your voice sounded familiar I was just watching the video you did with worldclassbullshitters lol I haven’t seen this vid in years
My boy tends to do something that you may have, without realizing it. putting weight on the vehicle you're playing with. Some could take it, and some can't. That flimsy thing couldn't. I've seen road rash come of pushing down on a Tonka dump truck and running along the sidewalk, cause it got away from him.
You waited 30 years? You sound like me, I waited 32 years to finally get my KISS Mego dolls
Funniest channel I have found!
Its a real shame that Mego had the rights to the Dukes. I also had this toy and some of the figures. They were junk. My daisy Fig got chewed up buy my mom and he Vacum of death. R.I.P DAISY ! Which sadly killed a number of my toys. The rest who knows. I do still have my boos hogg. He showed up in a tub of my old Joes. Thank god Boss made it
Nice GI Joe comics in the case.
Preach it! I had one of those, and the figures fell apart like wet toilet paper within a week. The General Lee doesn't even remotely look like a 1969 Dodge Charger, and the plastic was more fragile than peanut brittle. The left rear fender broke off of mine the same day I got it. I still have the thing, but it is pretty sad that an orange generic knock off plastic Dodge Charger from Kmart I have that had flags on the doors in place of numbers was a far better charger sculpt, was a far better looking "General." And I think my parents only paid $2 new for that knock off.
i never understood y it lkd so fat but i still wanted it got it years afterwards luvd it
I'm guessing Michael had pillows on the ground to cushion the General Lee's jump.
yeah ... came out after the movie they made ... first run had the stars of the movie on it then they realized they could sell more with the original cast on the box LOL
Ok Mike I gotta ask how bad was the crash and were there any survivors? LOL
They trashed a General Lee every time they filmed an episode, so at least there was symmetry.
i had one too and it split the rear trunk in half i guess just by playing with it, i'n sure i jumped it a few times. but i remember having fun with it before it broke. after that, i just looked at it and sobbed. oh well.
I bought a MEGO General Lee a few weeks ago at a local toy shop. I bought repo decals online and replaced all 4 screws in the bottom of the car with new ones. Seems to be made of pretty thick and sturdy plastic compared to todays toys including currently reissued toys from the 80s. I noticed a hole in the dash and that many of them have a steering wheel. Mine doesn't have the steering wheel on it. I'm wondering weather or not it's supposed to have a steering wheel. I read a thread on a mego website where somebody was told some of them did and some of them didn't. Since there is a small hole in the dash, I assume mine is supposed to have one, but I''m not sure. If anyone can provide some clarification as to weather or not my MEGO General Lee is supposed to have a steering wheel attached to the inside dash I would appreciate it. I also got the blonde headed figure that goes in the car and replaced the o ring, hook and all the screws on him, but the dark haired one was missing. So, I still have to find the dark haired Duke figure.

You can see the steering wheel in this video at: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mXqoy5uPidu9Zqg.html
I had that
That is why I am only going to get ertl diecast of Dukes of Hazards general lee
wouldn't be surprised, mine didn't even survive the first minute out of the box, and I DIDN'T EVEN BREAK IT! it rolled off my kitchen table and hit the floor and shattered to pieces!
Nice review. Check out my 2 dukes of Hazzard stop motion films. Oh and one smoky and the bandit film. Lots oh hit wheels from the 80s.
In all fairness, most of the Mego vehicles from the 1970's up until the company's demise were kind of crappy. I had the WGSH batcopter and that thing fell apart a few weeks after I recieved it. I was pretty careful with my stuff. BTW, did Mego Bo, Luke, and the General Lee survive that jump?
But did it survive the jump??
0:45 "HULK SMASH TOILET!"
Yup I got this for xmas of 1981 and needless to say it suuuuucccccckkkkkkeeeeeddddd! Lol
I 100% AGREE!! (yes caps I am indeed shouting) I Hated the Mego General Lee. NOTE: the figures were fine. But the toy looked nothing like the car from the show and like you said, it was one of the most fragile toy cars ever made. I don't think anyone from Mego ever watched the show because they did not know what the car looked like and had no idea how kids were going to want to play with it.... FAIL!! Yet another reason Mego went out of business... A little research and effort could have made this one of the most loved toys.... Mego Batmobile.... Also FAIL!!! Kenner put some realistic looking toys out there and were still durable to play with which is why they are still beloved today... But I think the same people who developed this General Lee are also behind Pop Vinyl. Just my 2 cents.
I had this too. I think it fell apart as well.
I loved the first 20 seconds! Hahahaha!!
Is that a Mego treadmill?
Well I loveD mine & mine didn’t break
hey the real general lee is not garbage it is a great car man

+lord rodimus who is saying anything about the real one???
I had that and I agree. It was a cheap piece of crap. Believe it or not, I got a replacement at the time. It was a knock off that was actually BETTER than the official General Lee toy.
It’s time to make a proper scale general Lee
We never saw it land! Just toss it in the bin, again!
if someone broke my toy they will suffer the same fate as Batman's parents
lmao. For a second I thought you were going to smash it(glad you didn't). Was there a latter version of this? I I got a general lee and both figures when I got my tonsils taken out in early 80's, I wish I still had but I remember it being similar but a little more "modern"
Making there way the only way they know how. That's just a little bit more than the law will allow.
Well, the the good old boys are gettin' a government ban nowadays. That confederate flag is more than the law will allow. I'm thinking about buying all the seasons before they become illegal. Maybe a General Lee t-shirt.

I've had a Confederate flag on my living room wall for the last 2 years and no one is taking it from me. Fuck political correctness!
Hello retro man. This. Video. Is. Funny your. Cool. I. You.. Find. The. Kid. That. Broke your.batwing.are.selling.this.general.lee.let.me.know
It had to be tried out. Ha, ha!
Mego made great action figures but very poor action figure vehicles.
The mego charger looks like a phone charger.
Faaaaa I had that and someone stole it from me!
I had most of these figures They all broke.
i had this, christmas of 81,also had the cadillac..i recall the other action figures where made of a softer plastic and a bit more durable..anyways at least the toys and the show had something in common, mainly quality...rewatched the show, although i really dont know how,its just a little bit less than my brain will allow
Hahaha!
Lol funny as🤣
Ah, the 1969 Dodge Charger POS General ----. Oh, by the way you may want to blur out the highly offensive flag on the car or you might get cancelled!😉
I had a Metal model General Lee the doors opened so you could put action figures in but I don't think you were supposed to play with it. I couldn't even scrape the paint off. I didn't know what the General Lee was but I didn't want that flag on because I thought it was ugly.
