This Megahome Machine is a beast! I have this exact model and purchased it back in 2010. I use it daily for 1-2 gallons of water and it's still going strong - highly recommended brand!

I have been using my "Megahome Water Distiller" 3-4x a day, every day since I bought it in 2012. I let it run its cycle; it shuts itself off, & I let it continue to drip the remainder of the water from the condenser into the catch pitcher until it drips no more. Once the distiller is done making a gallon, the entire machine has to be allowed to cool off, because scalding steam comes billowing out immediately upon pulling the lid off. While waiting for the machine to cool, the last of the distilled water is still dripping out the spout into the catch pitcher. So that is two reasons to wait for the machine to cool. I remove the lid from the machine, pour in a slight film of vinegar over the sludge at the bottom of the pot, & after an hour or so, I swipe-clean the sludge right off using a sponge bottle cleaner (they are on a stick), then rinse with tap water, & immediately refill the pot with more tapwater to be distilled. The vinegar cleans my distilling pot as pristine as the day I bought the machine; & that includes any tapwater sludge that stuck to the bottom of the pot. There will be different amounts of sludge at the bottom of the pot for every gallon of tapwater purified. I give an hour for the vinegar to dissolve & lift it all off. That sludge goes down my kitchen sink drain. I thank everyday for my distiller, that I am not swallowing that toxic, heavy-metal sludge in every single gallon of water I USED TO drink straight out of the tap before! I make 3 to 4 gallons of distilled water a day because that is the quantity I use close to every day for my drinking, cooking, & tea & coffee making, my pets, & my plants. My plants use 3 gallons every 4 days or so, & I keep a ceramic (3 & a half gal) water disenser just for the plants. A separate ceramic dispenser is for me & my pets, & I use up @2 & a half gals. a day. I am a physically disabled "elderly" person who cannot work an outside job, so I can run my machine constantly. The 4th pot of distilled water production, I have running overnight. This 4th load is what I store in one gallon glass jugs, & I have 33 glass gallon jugs full in my pantry. I had been sick these past two weeks with severe bacterial rhinitis, & could only handle being up to run the machine once a day, plus tend to my pets & plants. So I had been dipping into my storage supply of distilled water. I had done no cooking all that time except to make a gallon of tea per day. I ate toast, fruit, & nuts otherwise. The distilled water in jugs in my supply stash are just as good as the days I made each of them. I intended to use & replenish the supply after a couple years in pantry storage. It had been @ a year & a half since I filled the last (33rd) jug, & there is no algae, no "slime," no coating of any kind on the cap or inner bottle, no smell, no taste, no negative effects, no diarhea....nothing to indicate the purified water was anything other than pure & perfectly drinkable. My pets are fine; my plants are fine. Do NOT put cholrine in distilled water for storage or to keep til camping season. Chlorine is a toxic chemical that is put into municipal & county water supplies because the water purification processes are inadequate to clean toxins out of water, so they add more toxin--the chlorine. Makes sense, right?? Purified water is almost 100% free of all toxins/contaminations. Why Would it need a toxin (chlorine) in it? It doesn't! Chlorine is added to tap water to try to kill algae & bacteria in it. Does it work? NO it does NOT. Distilled water has No algae, bacteria, chlorine, viruses, heavy metal fluoride, heavy metal mercury, heavy metal arsenic, heavy metal lead in it, nor any one of the pesticide, herbicide, larvacide chemicals from farm runoff or industry waste in it. But Tap Water has ALL of that in it, & unfortunately, all our streams, rivers, & lakes all over the world do too. Most bottled water IS tap water with only the chlorine filtered out so there is little taste or smell. La Di Dah. A distiller costs much less than season's tickets, & much safer to ingest too! berThugh2 I just bought my distiller and was thinking I better start bottling the water, as 3 of us here plus I need cook and make tea etc. And if guest come over and want water. Paula's Life: Thanks for your kind reply. You asked about the storage. I bought 1 gallon plain glass jugs from Amazon.com for between $11 & $14 each, depending upon a sale or special, or quantity discount. Depending on the retailer, the jugs come with plain metal caps. The glass is fairly thick, but the bottles are not very heavy at all. When filled, I can lift one with one hand. I fill each jug clear to the top to replace all the air. One retailer on Amazon had only plastic caps, & another provided no caps at all, but did sell caps separately. I am wary of all plastics for food storage, but had to settle for plastic caps sometimes. The retailers are hustling to keep up with demand. People are catching on quick. By the way, the water left over from cooking, once cooled, is good for the plants, as long as no grease, oils (except from vegetables) has gotten into the water. I steam my veges & the water left in the pot is murky with vege. juice, which I used to drink, but I reserve it now for the plants, as they can use the vitamins & minerals in it. Once a year, I unscrew the metal plate from the top section of the distiller & wipe the mechanism down with plain vinegar (using Q-tips & paper towel), just to make sure no organisms of the mildew family coat anything, because those surfaces are always exposed to air, & remain moist all the time because of my constant usage. I then run the machine through a cycle, & use that ever slightly vinegar-tainted water for my plants. Its good for them. I was concerned that plants get the 98% pure water, they cannot get nutrients once the soil is depleted, so I save the used tea bags every day & spend some time mixing the tea leaves with fresh soil & put a layer of this on top of the soil in the pots. I learned to do this from a utube video. : ) I also put distilled water in my little hand-held bidet bottle (to rinse off with after the toilet), & fill my CPap breathing machine for when I sleep at night. I wash my face every night after a shower with distilled water, & my skin does not itch anymore, nor become inflamed like it used to. Think of the sludge at the bottom of the distiller, & that's what goes on our skin! And I wear gloves when washing dishes, & I bought on Amazon, (for $35) a shower head with little balls inside it that ionizes the toxins in the water, neutralizing them, & my whole body does not itch anymore! Before I text your head off further, I will just add that my gastroenterologist says I have one of the healthiest colons he has seen in someone my age (66 + yrs)! It may be the water. My best to you & your whole family.

Paula's Life: I correct myself. Today, as I was cycling the year old glass bottled distilled water for the newest bottled distilled water, I found a brown residue on the rubber seal on the underside of one metal cap on one of the older bottled waters. Any one of a few things can be true that caused this, for which I am going to find some solution: Since all newly bought things have factory, warehousing, etc. contaminates, they need to be washed first before using, including clothes; I washed all my bottles with distilled water & vinegar solution, but likely contaminated one (or more) of the caps with my bare hands at some point; :maybe my storage methods for empty bottles & caps needs to be improved; :perhaps a year is too long to go with the distilled water storage WITHOUT checking for evidence of mildew or lichen growth, OR cycle the old water for the new sooner than after a year; :since the wet brown stuff was only on the rubber seal in the cap, maybe the metal of the rest of the cap is not conducive to growths, so I should buy all-metal caps, if there are any; :I am thinking to pour clean melted wax into each cap only on the flat inner surface of the cap, just to coat the rubber seal; :Maybe I need to wash the gallon glass "catch" pitcher more often, especially the pour spout; : DUH. I've run out of thoughts right now. Maybe I will pop in some other time with some more jibber jabber. Take care.

I've had my distiller for a year, used multiple times a day. I also have glass storage bottles filled for extra water, and a glass container for dispensing what I use daily for cooking and drinking. If I use my dispenser for a few months and don't clean it, green stuff actually grows in the bottom.I'm pretty sure it's not harmful, but definitely not pleasant. So if I haven't been cleaning like I should, once the glass starts to get a green tint, I know it's time to dump the water on my plants and clean my glass dispenser. Now the sealed bottle with extra water have never gone green, so I'm wonder if the dispenser goes green because it's opened to the air every time I refill it.

I found one of these distillers at a thrift store for 7 dollars. It is brand new as the inside looks brand new and one of the tags is still attached. The only thing I need to purchase is the plug in cord and the carafe. The carafe is pretty pricey at 57 dollars. Thank you for reviewing this unit. I'm excited to use it.

That's a GREAT find. There is no need to pay hundreds of dollars for a pot distiller. I bought mine new on ebay for 65 dollars and it runs great and makes lots of distilled water. Just remember to use the charcoal filter to filter out volatile organic compounds. You can find a bag of 20 on ebay for about 10 dollars. Great find Holly!

Does some steam come out the top as well? If so, I could use added humidity in the winter!

I clean mine with diluted acid, it's a really easy way to clean the minerals left behind. Once you see what is in your water supply, it's easy to justify the costs associated with distillation. An activated charcoal filter will capture VOC's and what few chemicals the system doesn't eliminate

I use the American Made Anchor Hocking amzn.to/2Gn92S4 they are only $6 for 2 Quart at Target, but 2X the price on Amazon

after a year of good use my unit ,similar to the one you show here is not working very well.it shuts off after about one quart.i have to restart it after it cools down three more times to get a gallon.i need help.i opened the bottom and it looks very good and secure.

Does anyone know how to clean the tubing in the top part or if it’s even necessary?

There are glass 'tea' jugs with a dispensing valve at the bottom that are used all over in the South (Iced Tea is a big deal). One of those would be great to store your distilled water in.

The filters that go in the distiler are to remove v.o.c and are not for merly taste so it is importent to have the filters

I don't use the filter & I don't taste any VOC's. I can smell the VOC's when I shower so I take a quick lukewarm shower & do a final rinse with a bottle of distilled. I use Abba shampoo for hair & body, they claim it's organic. I stopped getting toxic vaccines years ago & I rarely get sick. Without the filter the distilled still reads zero ppm

Imran Khan is correct. Just because you don't taste anything doesn't mean VOC's aren't present. It comes down to boiling points of all the compounds. Distillation does not usually remove them all. The International Water Association says "Organic compounds that boil at temperatures lower than the boiling point of water (ex., benzene and toluene) will be vaporized along with the water. If these harmful compounds are not removed prior to condensation, they will remain in the purified product". With that said, I'm concerned about what material the mesh bags are made of. They are heat sealed and pure paper does not heat seal. I wonder if any plastics are added? If so then you might be putting toxins right back into the purified water. Frustrating.

@@L.J.01 , I am a super taster. I have a heightened sense of smell & taste. I can smell a woman's perfume from a long distance. Perfumes, colognes & scented commercial products are toxic. I can smell my tap water when I take a shower. I can't smell anything in my distilled water & I have used an EZ TDS meter to check the ppm level of my water with & without the charcoal it reads zero either way so I have decided not to use the charcoal. I have spoken to a few people who drink 3-4 quarts a day & they have noticed their gray hair reversing to their natural color of their youth. Distilled water cleans your arteries, organs, nerves, joints & your brain. Do not use underarm deodorants/antiperspirants because they cause Breast Cancer. If a commercial product is not 100% natural then it has toxic chemicals in it by design. Western medicine/Vaccines are designed to slowly kill you. Vaccines contain aluminum, mercury, formaldehyde, gender bending hormone disruptors & some have a cell line from an aborted female fetus. Children are being injected over & over again with toxins & gender bending chemicals which cause brain injuries, diseases & sometimes death by seizure. Have you noticed how many transgenders & sexually confused young people there are these days ? It's population control because transgenders & gays are less likely to reproduce.

@@ayres6727 , also I do not unplug the the fan from the boiling chamber because it will wear out the plug. When I remove the top I just twist it a couple of inches to break the gasket seal & it pops off easily. I fill up 3-5 gallon containers with water from the glacier water machines so I always have water in case of a water shutoff. The Glacier machines remove a lot of the crap from tap water so I don't have to clean the boiling chamber very often. When I do clean it I soak it with white vinegar for a few hours then rinse it out. We purchased the Megahome w/glass collection jug for $219. It's sold by quite a few American online companies. Our previous unit was from China & it stopped working after about a year. The Megahome glass container has a wider opening making it more convenient. We got free shipping from Nutriteam, showed up in about 7 days

Hi. I have a Kill-A-Watt too. I'm curious does the machine pull 700 watts all through the 5 hours? or does it kick on and off? What I'd really like to know is how much kwhrs does of energy does it use to make 1 gallon. Electricity rates in California where I live is absolutely insanely expensive. It's now 30 cents / kilowatt for me. Home distillation may be prohibitively expensive for me. Thanks!

I've took my distiller to the point its boiled dry, yes the sediment is on the bottom, I leave vinegar in soaking for 20 mins and wipe clean all is fine.

Does anyone have suggestions for water containers? I’ve been reusing one gallon glass apple juice jugs, but the lids are metal and rust. I’ve been sticking a folded paper towel over it which has helped. I’ve tried ordering replacement lids but haven’t found any that fit.

Yes, of course! It's simply pure water. You can heat it up, boil it, make ice cubes, cook with it...anything you do with water, you can do with distilled water.

If you keep it closed you might want to make sure it is completely dry inside to avoid mold.

I tried used boiling water but the fan wouldn't start. Tried unplugging the cables, but the the fan just started briefly when I pushed the button and stopped when I did not push anymore. So after replacing the boiled water with cold tapwater I tried again and this time the fan started. Are you really sure about this tip..? ,-) Thanks for great cleaning tips though.

Thank you for your informative video. While filling my distiller with water I walked away and forgot I was filling it. It overflowed for several seconds (surprise!)! What should I do? Would the water leak inside of the unit? How long should I let it dry?

I would let it dry for 4+ days to 1 week, the bottom is just an electric heating element. Its not as bad as submerging it in water from the outside. But some water probably seeped in is my guess into the bottom electronics.

How much water is in the jar when your timer shuts off the distiller? Do you let it get up to the top of the inside grip of the handle?

About 1" from the top, or 1/2" from the top of the white handle or 1/2" from the top most metal silver band. This allows me to control the pouring better, not have it too full.

Are the fan blades made out of plastic or metal?

You can, but your Hot Water has 5x the number of solids than your cold and would have more gunk at the bottom. If you do decide to do that, I would measure the AFTER with the TDS meter to see if its still satisfactory, it should be is my guess.

love my distiller....if I don't turn it off in time..I put in a little white vinegar and let it sit awhile...cleans right up

You can buy one of those "vacation timer electrical plugs" or a WiFi plug where you can set a countdown timer, which shuts it off well before it boils dry the bottom.

I set it to 4:40, and it seems to be just about right.

To remove more volatiles, leave top off for first 50 minutes, until boiling. If hard tap water, leaving an inch of water in tank won't stop scale buildup.

if you leave the top off ...then you are relasing vcc's into the air you breathe...this is why a carbon filter is better as they are trapped in the carbon

Doesn’t matter. The process of distillation removes everything apart from VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), which the filter is used for.

I went to Mexico and stayed with my daughter for a month. Took my distiller with me. Water was great! The left over debris had this fibrous cotton like substance. Anyone know what chemical/compound that is?

If your water source is a well, you might want to use the filter to help remove any sulfur contaminants in the water to improve the taste,

My distiller wont turn on no matter what. Is there an automatic shut off button or somethimg?

Would the warm air that's blown out be sufficient to heat a small room in the home?

Has anyone tried it without turning the fan on? Would it work at all? Or would it be extremely slow? Btw, mine had more deposits than yours after just one use.

Can you help me please as I have just got a MegaHome distiller. After my first distill there is a rainbow residue with a bit of sludge in the bottom. Do I just tip this out and rinse out or do I need to clean it with vinegar + water every time i use it whether it's 2 or 4 litres?? Also please could u help me choose a good TDS tester as i cannot see your one here on www.amazon.co.uk and there are just so many to try and understand and choose from and i don't know what i'm doing yet!!!! Should the 1 inch 'bad water' that's remaining in the tank after the distillation be poured down the kitchen sink drain back into the water supply or the outside drain or where please to avoid recontamination?

Anyone notice a taste in their water after its distilled? I havent been able to get a good batch yet after 5 cycles. It tastes like the grease from the machine. Ive cleaned and ran vinegar mulitple times. The off taste is still there.

Having the same problem. I find very stupid design due to plastic gasket between boiling chamber and the head. Distilled water comes out with plastic odor...not many people smell this.. I do!

I can't figure out how to set it up - Step 1 is to set up the glass bottle, and that the bottle is in the water distiller. How do I get it out?? Any suggestions?

Seriously? It is wrapped and gently put in the big pot to conserve space for shipping. Just reach in and pull it out. Follow instructions for attaching handle to glass carafe. Then, hand wash and dry all items before using.

My sediment becomes adhered to bottom and i need to scrape it off and my pot has never run dry

Why don’t you use the activated charcoal filter? You can just add your salt/minerals, no?

If you preboil the water it will decrease the VOC content of the water because they are boiled off first.

The difference in wattage is 550s for the heater the other is for the fan.

I use my megahome destiller every day. and now it heats up and then cuts off. I was told its the thermal switch. only use it for 1 year.

I thought I was saving money using this, lol too late I like the taste of this water.

I do save money using them, comes out to around 35c per gallon compared to the cases of water I buy at the store coming out to 78c a gallon (24 pack of 500ml bottles for $2.50)

While someone here mentioned the filters are to remove volatile gases (VOCs), I am skeptical. Mainly because if I am boiling the water, and vaporize the volatile gases, and somehow a portion ends up back in the Distilled water, then it can't be worse than the original. Unless of course it interacts with the air and is converted to something else, which I do not believe is the case.

The filters are required. If you use them, like you should, when you go to change them you can actually see the residue that it has been keeping out of your water. Mine always has residue on it when it's time to change them, and NO, not charcoal residue.

can someone explain the benifits of using the charcoal filter as the distiller releases the water. is it critical to use one or would it be ok without? Thanks

Hi, how can i know when the machine are almost empty on the distiller? do use a timer or what?

You didn't unplug anything don't forget in future as its so dangerous ... Sorry to sound bossy but I worry.

Australia is 240V power, so this takes 4 hours, makes 3.5Litres.. I also use it in 230V Republic of Turkey, it takes 4 hours and 19 minutes.. It uses 985Watts until boiling before it uses less power.. 750Watts is a lie on the sticker label.

You never said what the reset button was for....

This has no on/off button, so the reset button turns off the distiller when there is no more water in it, turns it off automatically, so that it doesn't burn the entire thing dry. Its like a circuit breaker. I like to use a SmartPlug and do a count down timer so that the Distiller does not even trigger the Reset Button.

Interesting that your watt meter read 700 watts. I bought my megahome because I read that anything over 580 burns vocs and doesn't make pure distilled water. I feel like megahome is false advertising 😕

if you dont use the the carbon filter then any VOC's in the water will remain in the water..becuase VOC's are not removed by distillation...but i guess you already know that...😄

PLEASE NOTE: The activated charcoal "After filter" is important to the safe use of this distiller. The reason being is that some VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds) have a lower boiling point than that of water and thus could find themselves being condensed in the cooling coils and thus in the distilled output. By having the activated charcoal filter in series with the output those VOC's are primarily removed yielding a very high degree of water purification. This activated charcoal should ALWAYS be installed and maintained in order to insure the safety of the distiller. DISTILLATION produces the purest water of any water treatment including filtering or reverse osmosis. Greetings from Ontario Canada.

Boiling the water first doesn't remove or evaporate the VOC'S, but instead, drives them further and more intensely into the water molecules - YOU NEED THE CHARCOAL FILTERS

If you save the dregs from city water they make a good rat killer, flouride.

i think i ruined my distiller by using the garden hose to fill it. Garden hoses leak dangerous chemicals, and now the water tastes like PVC even after its been cleaned & distilled.

Of cause you NEED the charcoal filters! don't be telling people that they don't need them. Although the water is distilled there still may be volatile organic compounds in the water. SO...it needs to run through this filter. Do some research before you make a video telling people something that is completely false! Why are you endorsing a 300 dollar pot distiller when people can find them on ebay for 65 dollars?
