I don't know about that, the frontal hull is still very classic design, reminiscent of Soviet's T-54/55 series. Especially the upper glacis, whereas Abrams and Leopard, as well as pretty much all modern MBTs in general have a close to vertical upper glacis, which means all protection falls under the lower glacis and transmission.

It's even older than I am, yet I remember them well in British Army service. Seeing them again in Kuwait in 1991 was an emotional moment, lost on the younger soldiers. One of my warrant officers had worked at Redstone Arsenal, the Army's primary rocket/missile development post, for a while in the 1980's. He spoke of trying out a Fiber Optic Guided Missile (FOG-M). He said it had a videocamera in the nose and he launched it, flew it up high and looked down on passing traffic, then guided it onto the top of a target tank on the firing range. Of course it blew right through the thin top armor. Not sure what happened to the FOG-M. Seems like a fiber optic cable solution would be pretty expensive in the 1980's.

These were a early stage test vehicles to research the next generation tanks. A additional 20mm cannon was tested in the turret and the driver was also sitting in the turret, ever in driving direction in a rotating driver's seat. Thats why you dont see driver periskopes in the front. It also had a hydraulic suspension with which it could duck to offer the opponent a low siluette. It was clear from the start that the tank was too complex and too expensive to use, but they wanted to test all these components. For the next stage, the US demanded higher armor protection, while the Germans put more emphasis on mobility and firepower. So the paths separated and led to the XM1 and Leopard 2FK (Eber). The leopard also had other test vehicles, e.g. as a double-tube casemate VT1 without a turret, similar to the Stridsvagn 103. It is currently in the WTS in Koblenz. Due to the stronger armor, the US was forced to use a light gas turbine and the 105mm rifled gun to meet the target weight of 50t, while the Germans could continue to use the robust and economical MTU diesel engine and a 120mm smooth gun with 44 caliber lengths. After experience in combat, both now weigh over 65t, 120mm Leopard cannons even have the 120 / L55.

@Sgt Rock Yep, the conventional round’s combustible shell casing was fragile and care had to be taken not to damage them. The rubber sleeve helped with this problem and from accidental ignition. The missle itself was long and cumbersome inside a small turret. If the missle was dented it could not be fired and had to be scrapped. When fired that missle kicked up alot of dust and obscured the flight trajectory for a few seconds too. Plus the Missle was expensive so I only fired it twice. Despite all the complications the 152mm gun system had it did perform ok during Tank Gunnery Qualification Tables. That said I knew of a case where a M551 blew up on the TG range and killed the gunner and loader, the TC was blown out of the cuppola and the driver escaped with some burns, both survived. It was believed that in the course of loading a conventional round it prematurely ignited possibly from a hot breach, smoldering case debris, breaking the case material from improper loading or a spark.

I like that your narrating more, Love your voice. ....and the fact you're adding some levity in with the facts, "Pesky helicopters" indeed! I sense The Chieftain's influence here, Cheers! Please do one on the Panzer IV going a little deeper than the surface scratching others do. I mean, the thing was in service at the start of the war and was pulling duty at the end. No other tank can claim this.

The most interesting thing about this is the driver's position. He had a little compartment inside the turret. This rotated by itself counter to the motion of the turret so the driver would always be facing forward. Unfortunately it never worked well enough, producing motion sickness in the driver.

Is this the one that was at Ft. Knox? I remember going there after the Armor School had pulled out. The place was becoming a ghost town. I remember seeing some of the places where "Stripes" and "Goldfinger" was filmed at. Now the town outside of post is drying up without the troops.

Considering it’s just gonna be a worser Abrams, the armor scheme doesn’t look any good against sabot, the ATGM will get screwed by APS technology, basically all the tech tested on this vehicle were eventually tested on the Abrams or on the Abrams, a 152 mm gun which is longer is gonna need an auto loader, otherwise it’s reload is just gonna be outdone. There’s a reason there’s 120-125mm guns bolstering a mix of those rounds, even missiles considering it’s a jack of all trades

Not all 152mm guns are created equal. This was a comparatively low velocity cannon, similar to that on the Sheridan and M60A2 which were both disasters. I’ll take a high velocity 105mm or 120mm over this anytime. I say this as a former tanker. The MBT70 was pretty interesting and I got to climb around on one of the prototypes when I was at Ft. Knox. However, it was way too ambitious given the technical limitations of the time and the US was smart to kill it and develop the Abrams instead.

Sure... Like the MRCA /Tornado. The Eurofighter/Typhoon and the Airbus a400 Atlas, the Eurocopter/Tiger etc. All long drawn out ,over budget decades long non American projects. European projects where the partner nations sign up then drop out ,then cut the numbers they want ,or cancel ,or change the spec or design role.Or a new government comes in and automatically opposes anything their predecessors did. Joint projects are universally dire.

The reasons are as you state. They just never deliver as they promise. It`s a poison chalice. If Sweden can make fighter planes suitable to its needs , I`m pretty sure the UK can. From the 1960`s onwards I have never seen anything but the same old story. If they go massively over budget, way over delivery date and the end result is a compromise of what was originally desired by the individual nations , What is the point? The final insult to the injury is that building subassembleys in different countries is militarily a disaster.Any enemy just has to take out one partner and you are fucked. By having Italy as a major partner of the Typhoon ,the UK loses it`s secure insular position that has been its saviour for centuries. No offence meant,it`s just geography ,the UK/Britain/England whatever it has been called these last thousand years is fucking hard to invade or defeat.European nations not so much.

I have liked the MBT-70 since I got the old Aurora 1/48 scale model in my youth, 50 years ago. Alas, too many high tech ideas crammed into one tank. There is a company now making 1/35 scale kits of both the US MBT-70 and the slightly different German version. A good looking tank doomed to failure.

Forgive me, but so far as I edit this 340 comments and only 3 complaints about the audio.. I think its a problem at/on the device you're watching with. ..perhaps you should check your own 'usual' system's sound equaliser settings/preferences, and/or hearing aid, headphone or speaker compatability issues first; no audio problems detected for myself. ..if Sofi boosted her mic more, it'd cause clipping problems and amplification 'noise' issues throughout the recording. Remember TV, radio and internet adverts typically use louder volumes for grabbing the attention of the dumb, and infuriating everyone else, inc' yourself/yourselves.
