Got an 03’ cooper R50 as my first car and currently restoring it mechanically/modifying and under sealing while everything is off, massively underrated cars the R50/53’s generation,can’t imagine what the supercharged feels like!

I have a 2002 R53, but how do you get the doors to lock at 15 mph or so, mine dont lock... i have to press the Button, is there a trick or something?
Nice to see someone different with a car review. First thought at a glimpse this was a Jamie FYD video by the thumbnail
Cool shirt Adam 👍. I've got nearly all their albums so best I get one . Just a thought . Have a look at the Gunston Perana replicas(next to the White Capri). They're V-8 Capris made for South Africa. The blown Anglia looks like an Allardette by Alan Allard, son of UK drag-racing pioneer Sidney Allard. All cool stuff . Thank you mate . Pete

had a low mileage r53 cooper s...great fun until it hit the 100,000km mark...then the fun stopped and despite perfect maintanence the repair orgie started...tear in the exhaust manifold, timing chain tensioner, ecu problems,waterpump and kompressor,engine mounts...and the list goes on and on, just one thing after another...you repair one thing then the next problem shows up!!! these cars are a blast to drive on b roads until they just are´nt anymore and become permanent guests in your local repair shop...had a real love hate relationship with that car...great performance and handling but absolutly sh*tty reliability!!! eventually sold it and now i´ve had a Abarth 595 competizione as my little b road fun car the last 5 years...and honestly i´ve got almost a 195,000km on it now and have´nt had a single issue with it yet! ya they are a bit expensive even as used cars in compairison to a mini but just as fun and tenfold more reliable...what the mini comes cheaper buying comes back to haunt you in repair costs! still love the mini´s just would never buy one of the earlier models again!

Maybe this comes a little late, but a R50 Cooper is an amazing first car. Best is if you get a 2004-2006 with heated seats and Automatic AC. Amazing vehicles and fairly reliable. I myself have one with over 160k miles.
What! An AdamC video featuring a Mini? I was under the assumption that he not a fan of mini's since he rarely points them out in his videos.
Is it UK exclusive?
What exhaust?
Bought my first one a year ago... I might as well live in it, same miles on a 2005, it'll deffo screw up at some point, I've learnt this and mines a 3 owner car namby Pamby"d all its life It doesn't matter when it does because I've never drove anything as fun and I'm a 45 year old petrol head, I'll be buying a ticket so I've got a back up when one dies briefly 22mpg absolute tops but yet again 🤷🏻♂️
I got a r50, it’s my first car. But even the 50 is probs the most fun car I’ve driven. Eventually I’ll upgrade to a r53 😂
R53 was okay but I'm bitter as the fan resistor went and I didn't see until I sold most parts off it, thought I was headgasket 😭🤣

I don't think you are correct there, sir.
I’d love an r53 toy but the road tax puts me rightt off
Honestly you’d be better off not getting the S, insurance gonna be too high for first driver. I almost had a convertible model and I was quoted at £400/year for the first year. Could pick one up for under £3k too. Also had either a Stereo CD or a Cassette player (which I thought was cool for an ‘05 car).
@burgerbait
Жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing but $400 seems like a steal. I paid just over 2k for my insurance on a 1.1 peugeot 106 when I passed. I guess the insurance on the mini offsets the cost if you've paid close to 3k for a first car though.
@sim_1
Жыл бұрын
@@burgerbait that’s true. My insurance was also only just over £2k, with a black box too; for an ‘09 Renault Megane 1.6. My car was my dads however and had sat still for about 5 years before I had it, insurance priced it at being worth around £2500.

I’ve had a few and they all run hot, the all leak oil and they’ll all need a clutch. The trouble is, you have to take the whole front end off or practically the whole engine to do any work. They aren’t really sustainable financially for someone really young on a budget, unless you can strip it on your drive yourself.

I would NOT go near that Mini. If you have a look at just the previous MOTs, it failed on 19-OCT-11, passed the very next day, then failed on all the same faults that were meant to have been fixed when it went for MOT in 2012 with only 4568miles extra. There is no way those faults were repaired. Off-road in 2016 and 2021... Has it been crashed or was it an insurance wrote-off from CoPart Auctions? This is the problem with a lot of these raffle sites, you do not know the problems you might end up with unless you do ALL the checks. Even using things like CarVertical ONLY tell you the history of a numberplate or chassis number - NOT the car they might be attached to as it might not be the correct car. I definitely would not go near this, not even for a $5 raffle ticket. I would want the full MINI service history of any such car and to have it checked out first, Too many people get shut of cars that no one will buy.

I sort of get what you're saying, however those MOTs are a decade ago...a lot can change between then & now. If this car is worth say £3000, if you won this for £5, then you've got £2995 leftover to repair anything (which it won't need anyway) 🤷🏽♂️ I'd say thats a bargain...

I’m not 100 per cent sure as I don’t have an Abarth, but they say that MINI provides better chassis and steering, as well as power potential. From an engineering point of view MINI is overall more efficient. My R53 is almost 20 years old. I bought it 7 years ago. I’ve used it as a DD quite intensely as it’s the only car I have. The mileage has gone up from 180.000 km to 420.000 km. The car has obvious mods and 200 HP. I must admit, that It’s been repaired for many-many times. Love-hate relationship continued for the first 3-4 years. But after that it suddenly stopped braking. No huge troubles since then. I traveled for 5-7.000 km several times with no problems as well. By the way, I’m not a mechanic at all. So, I am pretty sure that if this car is carefully looked after it is reliable. The main issue is to find a good one on sale. They are rare in general and good ones are hunted for. Frankly speaking, a few weeks ago while speeding on streets I burned an exhaust valve and currently ride with only 3 cylinders running. I am waiting for my friend mechanic/tuner to install Cat Cam, TVS, BVH and remap the controller. He is genius and the one who found a way to do whatever he wants to the Siemens controller. His tune to Sprintex SC is way more efficient then the original one by Bytetronik… So, we will deal with the burnt valve as well. R53 is a great car. The only real (!) issue is squeaking plastic. I don’t really care about it, but my wife does. That annoys…

@@alexfluxx3358 as somebody that has had both i can only say that yes the mini is tons of fun and has huge potential...and yes the stearing is a bit better then the abarth aswell as the seating position...as for power potential both are really good, my abarth went from 180hp to 220 hp just with a remap and a better air intake...and with a turbo and intercooler mod + some bigger injectors you can reach reliable 300+hp no problem...when it comes to interior quality both are a mixed bag of cheap plastik and some quality things like leather and alcantara...at the end of the day the power and quality diffrences are slim to none...the main issues and diffrence between the 2 is reliability and repair costs and thats where the abarth is a big jump ahead of the game compaired to the r53...my abarth is a 2012 model and allthough not 20 years old but 11 years without problems speaks for itsself...regular maintanence and two new timing belts that where changed out of percaution is all it took to run perfect until now...things that will probably need some atention in the near future thow are the clutch and two new wheel bearings in the front..and if you ask me that sure beats the many repairs that i went threw with the mini and the ones you had the first 4 years as you said. so to make a long story short eventhow the mini still has a place in my heart, my personal opinion is the better daily with cheaper longterm runningcosts from my expierence is the abarth 595...not saying you can´t get lucky with a r53 aswell and it just runs without problems, but i was just sick and tired at the end of depending on luck when it comes to a small reliable daily with enough power under the hood and nice styling. and lets be honest if it was´nt for the styling of both mini and abarth nobody would drive these cars...there all about the looks...there are a ton of better quality and more reliable cars on the market with simular specs for much cheaper... just for example my second car is a lowered white merc 190e from 1987 with a 2.3 16v motor 185hp that does 235kph and 0 to 100kph in under 7,5 sec. on the autobahn and i shot it cheap for under 3 grand about 15 years ago...the thing handles better then any mini or abarth and i even did the same lap time on the nürburgring as with the 220hp abarth and almost 3,5 sec. faster then the r53 without any mods except some sporty coilovers, and have had to do nothing but the typical services/maintanence on it and i´m currently at around 385,000km with it...those are the typ of cars that are real keepers that even are starting to increase dramatically in value these days...as for minis and abarths, these are just fun cars and when and if they start having problems its best to just let them go and buy the next one...they are not worth the longterm investments and headaches.
love your videos
Sweet. Dude, in 20 years I think these are going to be really expensive, and as desirable as 911s. I've had the same R50 since 2005 (it's as fast as a stock S, though): kzread.info/dash/bejne/poeuqZRqgrLNXbg.html
