A family member just retired after working on the hurricane 6 cylinder for three years and apparently they had issues with sand stuck in the casting and the motors continuously blowing up. He said that motor will bring the brand down for good as they never got it to actually be reliable and management forced it into production even though it will not pass a single durability test that was done on the V8's. He said they land up with a cracked block around cylinder 3 and Stalantis solution was to removed the test all together and changed the software to shut down the boost to try and prevent the blocks from cracking and that they still pulled the test motors and found fractured castings that would fail in the future. Since he designed the Hemi and has awards for doing so, I believe he knows what he's talking about when he says stay away from anything with a hurricane 6 cylinder I believe him.

He said the cylinder wall thickness vs the block thickness being so thin allows it to over expand and cause fractures and they need larger spacing between cylinders and a much thicker block but due to size requirements for multi-vehicle packaging they refused to redesign the truck block differently than a soccer moms SUV. Another 75k+ pickup truck lineup. It's insane. They should rename this segment for these. People buying these will kill the affordable full size utility pickup trucks. These monsters with their tiny shopping cart (or man's purse as a lot of people says) in the back have nothing related to pickup, except the name. Look the "mid-size" pickups segment right now, no more 7ft beds, very limited models with 6ft beds, most commonly 5ft beds and less, all of them have 4 doors, and they all are the size of full size pickups 20 years ago, and they cost 50-60k+.

  • @Alan-tr5uj

Yessir! The prices on new half ton trucks are ridiculous(let alone heavy duty trucks). I paid $68k for a new 18' Ram 2500 Laramie w/ a Cummins out the door, pretty well optioned out, 8ft bed w/ fifth wheel hitch, etc. It's a work truck, and it gets worked HARD. Even $68k is a lot for that truck, BUT it does clean up nicely. I can toss a camper in the bed and take the family on a camping trip, and it's an enjoyable ride every time. I wouldn't pay $70k for any of these new half ton RAMs, I don't care about the off-road chops. That's a lot of money for a truck that's not very good at doing regular "truck" things. How many people are actually paying $70k+ for a new truck just to rip it off road Baja-style? The truth is 80% of these or more will NEVER leave the pavement, the furthest off-road these go are into a shopping center parking lot. 😆Can you even get a long box with the crew cab on a half ton RAM? Anyways- how come automakers are so tone deaf as to why sales are in perpetual decline?? COST is the #1 reason preventing sales in most cases. Quality issues are a close 2nd for many, and now banks not lending on Stellantis vehicles unless they're financing 85% or less of MSRP, simply because banks don't believe CDJR vehicles are actually worth the price listed on the sticker- are reason #3. These reasons are all compounding into one major issue that needs to be addressed before the damage becomes irreversible for Stellantis. No they won't fail overnight, but if this trajectory continues, bankruptcy WILL rear its ugly head. That's a certainty if steps to change course aren't taken in the short term.

I would love to see a drag race, both on and off road. Between the new Ram RHO, and the Raptor ARRR! At this point, because of stupid pricing. I can only afford to watch other people drive these trucks! Lol.

A 15 second QM hemi or a 12-13 second Hurricane with benefits that also translate directly to improved towing? You guys are nuts. I'll miss the hemi roar and overall simplicity as much as the next guy but like Ford with the ecoboosts, RAM will rebound. Remember, the slumping sales are with the Hemi right at this moment.

I've always been and inline 6 cylinder guy had 250, 292 gm and 300 ford's and couldn't kill them great engines , or the ol slant 6 mopars or jeep 4.0l. All great and then diesel engines that are inline 6 . Now gas turbo inline 6 just makes sense great low end torque probably onto something great.

3.0 Litres….NOPE… absolutely any mechanical engineer can tell you that a tiny straight six (think bmw 3 series) will have to run 1.5 to 2.0 BAR just to keep up with an aggressively tuned NA V-8. That level of internal stress, temperature, and fatigue on the bottom end (much less then damn head and valve train), will dramatically limit the life and reliability of this engine. Let’s see the 3.0TT after 100K miles of hard driving.

This isn't 1980 or even 1990 anymore. We have vastly improved materials and engine management systems.
