Meet The Gaffer

Ойын-сауық

When new lights are introduced, I'm always interested to know how they compare to units I'm already using and familiar with. In this instance, it seemed like a no-brainer to see how the white-tunable version, the 60x, compared to the Dedolight DLED 7. The 60d has more output than the 60x, but is daylight only. Both the 60d and 60x, like the unit I'm comparing them to, are very handy for adding a little bit of light to a scene in a focusable way that gives you good control of the beam.
I've been trying to incorporate the Hollyland 400S Pro into recent episodes and it makes a showing here as well as a way to wirelessly send video to a monitor in the 4-up MX mode from the ATEM mini pro ISO video switcher, which is helpful when you have multiple cameras to keep track of. I did also use the Hollyland Lark 150 wireless audio receiver and transmitters, but with Sanken lavs.

    Thanks for what you do - I’m a DP owner operator strengthening my grip knowledge, your content has been crucial. What’s your opinion on investing in bounces/grid diffusion larger than what you might use it for? For example, I use mainly a westcott scrimjim as my fabric supports, sometimes full frame sometimes t bone. A lot of times just a 6x fabric. I feel an 8x fabric would be more versatile for different setups but obviously too big for the 6x - would there be a downside to just rolling up or clamping the extra fabric when not used or is it wiser to get the proper size?

  • @meetthegaffer

    @meetthegaffer

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Matt, Good question! From time to time we end up with larger goods than the frames we have available, and this can come in handy when you need to have multiple green screens butted up next to each other because you can wrap the green around the frames so no ties or frames are visible. But normally I try to stick with the right size or longer so that you can stretch the fabrics and/or keep from clipping anything but the webbing that borders the fabric. Having solids that are larger can work and stretching a larger diffusion over a window can work, but it’s nice to have at least one length of pipe/square tube/painter’s pole that is the actual length:) Hope that helps.

    Hi Luke, thank you so much for your informative content! Learnt a lot over the years from this channel! I have quick question. I know this does not relate to the content of this video here but I can't find any source of information online that can give me an answer and so I hope you could help out. The question relates to the following scenario: - I recently purchased a Sekonic 858D light meter. It was supposed to be an upgrade to my trusty old Spectra Cine IV meter. I much enjoy the spotmeter and other advanced functions on it, though I must admit that the software is quite poorly designed, especially with all that screen real estate and what they could have implemented but didn't. However, one thing really makes me question my purchase. The sensitivity of LUX/FOOTCANDLE readings appears much worse than my old Sekonic. Though from specs online it would appear that both lightmeters are equally sensitive to light, the Lux/Footcandle readings I take with the Spectra Cine are much more precise. The spectra does not round off the numbers as the Sekonic does. It has much more decimal information. The Sekonic sometimes jumps 50 footcandles or more, whereas the Spectra will go down to 1 footcandle. MY QUESTION: Is this normal and does this mean I can't rely on the Sekonic for accurate Lux/Footcandle readings? This makes me question wether this light meter is more geared towards photographers than cinematographers/gaffers. I know you work with light meters a lot and so would appreciate a quick response, thought of yours on this. Whenever you have a moment of course :) Thank you!

  • @meetthegaffer

    If I was smarter I would have a better answer. I know it defeats the purpose of the all in one incident/spot, but does it work to keep using your Spectra for incident and Sekonic for spot? Kinda old school, but maybe that fits your comfort level and that’s good?

    @@meetthegaffer Thanks for answering :) Ideally, my intent was to just have the spectra as a backup. The less I need to carry on a shoot, the better. For sure... if you already have the parallel beam adapters and are using that with reflectors than that will be more efficient that the 60’s. That said, the 60’s can certainly be used with reflectors as well; in fact, any light can be used with reflectors😉

    @@meetthegaffer One more question actually if you don't mind! From what I understand, the parallel beam is very important in the use of the reflector systems (light steam of light bridge etc) because it helps mimic the natural light of the sun etc. I'm still relatively new to lighting, so forgive me if I'm misunderstanding, but if I were to just use the aputure without the parallel beam, would it affect the quality or the advantages of not having to worry about the inverse square law with the reflectors etc? I also see 1.2K HMI's used with the reflectors a lot, but seems like the new 600D Aputure would be good to use with the reflectors as well? Sorry if I'm misunderstanding the parallel beam aspect of it, but it seems Dedo and Christian Berger speak about the importance of it and not just using any light to reflect? thanks!

  • @meetthegaffer

    @meetthegaffer

    3 жыл бұрын

    Good questions! To be honest, I’m a noob when it comes to both of these reflector systems too. I think it’s important to see these systems as additive tools rather than tools that will usurp all other methods. I plan to add reflectors to traditional set-ups as a way to acclimate myself. In terms of using parallel light: You create a more advantageous inverse square law situation anytime you use a mirror or reflector, regardless which unit you use, because you are moving the point of the source “virtually” by reflecting it. Any light you aim at the reflector will do this. The parallel beam adapters provide a super focused/paralleled light from the units they are optimized for, but this doesn’t negate other units being used and being equally productive within these systems. On large features you’ll see people using HMI PARs, Molebeams, Fresnels and many people use joleekos. The advantage of joleekos is that you can cut any spill around the reflector if you don’t want light hitting the area around the reflector. I would recommend that you use whatever you have available, find out what works best within your current budget, and not worry so much about what might be the most optimized.😉

    @@meetthegaffer Thanks so much for this detailed answer, this helps me so much! I totally understand I should be viewing it more as an additive tool. I'm more of a Director/DP though who has always used available lighting, simply because of the benefits it affords the actors on set. But once I found out about the reflector system, it's really flipped my world upside down in understanding I can still light a scene within a controlled manner, while keeping stands, lights, flags, cables, to a minimum for my actors. Also, not to mention the benefits of having slightly more general lighting that they can move within that isn't bound by the inverse square law as much. It's all been very exciting to learn about and really appreciate youtube channels like your to help me learn more about gaffing/grip side of things which are typically not my forte. Thanks again! I'll be trying some aputure units as they fit my budget best for now.

    Kinda different units if you look at them in a larger picture, so important to think through how they will be used and which other units they will be used with. If you want to be able to incorporate them into an existing DMX landscape, Dedo’s may be your route, but if you are not really getting into DMX and local control or apps like Sidus Link are enough to give you remote control, then maybe lean toward the 60d/x. To go battery with Dedo you’ll need an additional ballast, but with the 60d/x you can go direct to a batt with D-tap. So just depends how the unit(s) will fit into your ecosystem of other lights/control.

    @@meetthegaffer thanks so much for continuing this conversation with me. For now I've ordered two of the 60X. As I was able to cancel my Dedo order and I figured if I still want a Dedo the 60x would still be useful for it's extra output. It's also cheap so it's easier to just have a few extra lights, and probably easier to sell in the used market if I change my mind. My main question is this idea of Dedo lights having this world renowned optic. Always being known for this beautiful light. A term they call "clean beam technology" or something like that. I'm just wondering if I'm missing out on any of this magic that's hard to measure. Or is a light a light in this situation where if both lights were spotted at 15 degrees it would have the same "quality". I took this photograph with my friends DLED4 and I'm just wondering if I could get the same with the 60X (perhaps requiring the mini spotlight zoom + 18 leaf iris to spot down more): instagram.com/p/CNbRz-lsD4H/

    @@MatthewChenDirector hey Matthew, check out Gaffer and Gears video where he compares the aputure light to the Dedolight: kzread.info/dash/bejne/jKlkrrCPdbufnZs.html I own a DLED 7 and the quality of the beam is great, but these new aputure lights do seem to compare very well. The example photo you posted is very nice, I have no doubt you could achieve the same result with the aputure since the light is not casting shadows over a long distance. The sharpness of the neck and nose shadow on your model should easily be maintained by the aputure lights. Personally, I still think Dedolight has the best projection optics of them all - which is why I went with them. The really great thing is that they also offer a number of different lenses for their projection attachment. I shoot at home in a very small space so the Dedolight 60mm projection lens is needed to spread the light wide enough within a short 2-3m distance. I actually believe the reputation of Dedolight having a very unique light quality and ‘character’ was forged in the days of tungsten hot lights and LED has sort of leveled the playing field slightly. I recently decided to purchase a couple of discontinued Dedolight tungsten lights. The DLH436. It uses a low voltage 400 watt tungsten filament bulb. The filament is only 10mm x 6mm in size so the optics can be more ‘impressive’ than any LED in terms of spot intensity. If you are chasing the elusive ‘perfect’ character of the Dedolight perhaps consider the DLH436 for yourself… they are currently half price when you buy direct from Dedolight: www.dedoweigertfilm.de/dwf-en/garage_sale/ EDIT: Also thought I should mention that the Dedolight optical quality remains very good when you start to spit them up a bit - other fresnels can get a bit ‘soft’ or ‘fuzzy’ when you start to spot.

    The Dedo’s have a longer zoom range, I believe, but I’m thinking you could get a similar quality of light with either unit. There is no perfect light, but it’s definitely possible to get similar results with many different units. As a gaffer, you like to have as many different tools available so that you can just reach for the tool that will get you the result you want the most efficiently and with the most flexibility. These are both good tools.
