Meet The Gaffer is a channel interested in all things Grip and Electric... which includes aspects of Video Production that affect other departments. My experience includes documentary, educational, corporate, commercial, and feature production. My name is Luke Seerveld. I'm a working gaffer who owns a 2-ton Isuzu NPR-HD. Nothing fancy, but it fits the work available in the San Francisco Bay Area. I have access to bigger trucks and more gear, but I like the sweet spot of medium to small sized jobs at this stage in my career. Meet The Gaffer includes walk throughs of jobs I'm on, discussions about new gear, explanations of gear we use a lot, interviews with other working professionals, and opportunities to talk about lighting concepts or aspects of freelancing that may not be super clear to those starting out. I do my best to respond to everyone who participates!

Anyone that tells me they are pro-life I thank....for supporting free, easily accessible and socialized birth control. They always have a quixotical look when I do.
Have you tested the Lux vs the Amaran 200x s?
I have not. I do not have any Amaran COB units.
@@meetthegaffer oh! But on paper the Colbor is brighter right?
I don’t trust the marketing of most brands😅
To me its an LED Zip light....looks like the old fashion Mole 2K zip light...
And the early iterations were a type of scoop, like a Mole supersoft zip.
Nice interview! Thanks a bunch! Luke, did you worry about turning the Dyno 1200c all the way up in the Air Glow? Maybe I'm overthinking it, but I would think it could burn through the inflatable tubes at the bottom at higher intensities.
I imagine that’s a possibility, but the larger model is built for that size unit, and I assume uses the same material, so not too worried😀
Would love to talk about someone over there about reviewing one for my Nova 600's that I own.

I can't wait for the Vortex4 version is available! Thank you for sharing!

Seems not to work with Nanlite 2x1 (120C) for some reason, I wonder if they do not list it because it's not a professional light or it's too heavy to work with it. Also when I see "get a quote" I'm a bit scared I won't be able to afford it :D.
Well it's definitely priced with the type of jobs these guys work in in mind, but if you ask your nearest dopchoice-carrying retailer, they should be able to give you a price
Just because a particular unit isn’t listed doesn’t mean you can’t pair them. I believe the regular 2x1, before additional backs, fronts, and snap grid is $1400.
@@DollyRanch I have to get my 2x2 panel first :D - planned already in the budget. And actually looks like there is even a retailer of DoPchoice in Poland :D.
@@meetthegaffer Quite steep for YT, but will see what is the price in Poland. I'm afraid there will be +23% VAT and some duty and fee on top of $1400 :(. Maybe I will buy it in states next year. I wonder how travel friendly it is.
Comes in a soft carry bag.
So nice of Martin he agreed to this interview ... :D I thought I got all the modifiers, I was wrong ... :D
Awesome Interview guys, can't wait to check out the Air Glow.
Such a great interview! Thanks for doing this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Do you have any update or additional thoughts all these months later?
The units were provided for review, not to keep, so I have not had the good fortune to continue to get to know the pluses and minuses of these units. I think there is a use case, but without the ability to hang on to them it’s hard to know if they would fit into regular usage. Batteries tend to give me “range anxiety”, so I like having removable batteries that provide the option to swap out power as needed. That said, we’ve gotten used to tubes, and with an Astera product you know the runtime will match real time pretty well. If I did a lot of run and gun outside, they could be great. If I was working a job where we were moving fast and power was hard to come by, they could be handy, but if they were a go to unit it seems like I would want double the amount so I could put them on charge, while still going with others. There are add-on batts available, but again, it would hard to know how often these would be needed unless I had a longer time to play with them and get to know how they would fit. The other side of it is that units with a certain output often need to be small and lightweight for rigging. These are on the heavier side, which is great for wear n’ tear, but not as quick for lightweight rigging scenarios. Nice that they are all-in-one, but maybe not for all scenarios.
@@meetthegaffer Great insight, thanks for the time to reply. I work mostly on feature film and television where we fortunately get a lot of prep and rigging, so while these would be incredible in some 'run and gun' scenario's, I'm not sure that I would get the real advantages of them for most of my situations. I think the Astera ecosystem/engine is the most appealing to me but the output versus price has deterred me for now. On a show I did last year we used a Fiilex G3 on battery so much on locations that it ended up being an MVP. I may have to try out the Pluto w/ a projection lens to see if hit gets close to that. Hiding a light on camera for bounces etc was a lot of creative fun.
@DJSILKWOLF The Fiilex Q6 might be worth a look too. Same form factor as the Q5, but brighter and with internal crmx. You need 26V batts tho. The Asteras have versatility and robustness, but have some heft.
"big hairy problems..." 🤢
Do you mind me asking: why build a huuuuge lighting setup, when you block 3/4 of it in the end? Am I missing something or would a much smaller setup (like a large softbox with good internal diffusion) have a comparable result?
It’s all relative… A book light offers the potential of another step of light scattering that can translate into softness. Direct light, no matter how many times you break it, is just going to be subtly different than indirect light. There are many different ways to get to a similar result, but depending on your preferences and what you have on hand in terms of time, budget, gear, and personnel you have the option to play. Exploring how light falls and wraps, caresses or pops is all part of the joy of lighting. 😀
Very nice testing. I like the Open Face booklight the best, but it's negligible to the Nanlux book and CRLS. That Godox seems to have cooled up your face quite a bit. And looking at the background to your face, it's for sure that light. I like comparing the catch light as well. The CRLS system is great, I mean it's filmmaker dependent, but I tend to like that slight more contrasty fall off than the wrap around of a panel light. Having just stepped into the CRLS game myself .... I look forward to doing more with that system. As usual, thank you for your time to share your tests.
every week i am setting up at a new venue and typically relying on standard outlets. i use a klein circuit tracer with usually successful results but it isn’t always reliable. i would love a safe way to intentionally trip a breaker. is there such a device? a box that ‘shorts’ or hyper loads an outlet to more easily find the breaker. much like a gfci tester does.
I don’t know of such a “tripper” but I’ll ask around.
Hey really nice work! I want to buy some lights for professional work and im wondering how much power I need. If you dont mind the question. In your experience in how many shoots percentage wise do you need light above 500w?
Interesting question. I think for what I do it’s less about need and more about want. A lot of interview/B-roll jobs could be done with one 600w unit and a number of lower watt units. Many doc DP’s are set up this way with their personal kit. They often call me when they need to go bigger or move faster or rig something or have to deal with windows that their units can’t overpower. So maybe start small and add larger, higher watt units when it’s something you feel you could use to better light the sets you’re on.
@@meetthegaffer Thank you so much! Thats so insightfull!
Thanks for the feature Luke!
Once again, great vid Luke!!! 👍🏽
Nice facility. Does Eric supply banded for his cam-lock distro or would you need to bring your own? (note: large HMIs might be overkill in that place)
They could probably sub-rent or you could.
We don't, but we're about 5-10 minutes from Little Giant, and we can sub-rent any distro you need from them and have it delivered to the studio for you.
Such a clean space. Love it!
It’s all too expensive! I make feature length movies with birthday candles and trying to remember really hard. (I rub my eyelids for special effect.) 😂 But seriously, I see this subframe stuff, think about how it might work, get stumped, and I’m just amazed it’s available at any price point. Do people really complain about the “high cost” of professional film and video gear?
Awesome! Looks top clean. All black C-stands 😎
I’m pretty happy to be considered an “old friend”. Love ya bud. See ya on the next one
Or maybe we are a few of your “old” friends😆
@@meetthegafferI’ll take it 🤣
Sub frames 😵💫 my poor feeble brain, suddenly i'm feeling very old.
I was WOW ... at subframing, but when I've seen the tracking with LiDAR I was ... WOAH :D
Cool stuff Luke! Love the dino shirt
That sub frame tech sounds wild haha
Hi Luke, I saw you, your buddy Andrew Lock, and the Guy from “Gaffer Salon”, on an Aperture Lighting Panel a few days ago. Wow, I really love it when Gaffer’s get together and talk to each other; I learn so much! I watched both days of the show on the Aperture KZread Channel. Also, I joined the “Gaffer’s Salon” on Facebook a few days ago; so far it’s been a great resource! Take Care, and have a good day. Mathew A Coulliette
Thank you Luke. I always appreciate you videos. On this one however, the open window is providing a healthy amount of ambient light which would become more influential whenever you darken the 1X1 with cloth. I suspect the softness change would not be so great if no other source, existed, (except for when you moved the diffusion closer to the subject since then the light can better wrap the subject.
"simple setup" :D
Look like lights for gaffer are like claps for woodworker ... you can never have too much :D.
Hi Thanks & God Bless bro - why is it that the 3ft dome on the shadow of the head looks brighter than the 5Ff which is a larger source?
I changed my exposure according to false color, so there may be slight discrepancies. I was looking more for light quality than matching exposure exactly. That may have something to do with it.
Brillant!! 👏👏👏
Where to buy🤗
www.colborlight.com/ Maybe start here?
I love this. Would love to see more of these kinds of chats on your channel, Luke! Cheers ~
Another one is on the way, but life keeps interfering 😑
Have fun guys
Hi Luke, How are you? I hope you’re doing well. Your want-to-be-gaffer! I have made some good progress in the last couple of days. I have 2 Aputure 300x’s and 2 Aputure MC-Pro’s; (this is not new). But recently I have bought… Blackout Lighting Console Next for my iPad Pro - $800.00 (3) Godox CRMX Receivers - $200.00 each ($600). (They are powered by an USB port on the light. No Battery.) (1) Aputure Sidus One (Converts WiFi to CRMX Transmitter) - $400.00. (Brand new just got mine Thursday.) Just got everything working this afternoon. (Friday). I always appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions and I wanted to share this news with you. Mathew A Coulliette
You’re on your way!
the band is back together!
Great
Awesome to see these setups!
A perfect match 🎉
the 2k booklight and CRLS are the ones for me. Which set up did you like more after watching your video?
Be careful, the long 10sec press and short press actually factory resets the device
I have mine on order already! happy to see more info about this unit online.
Much needed.
nice usb connection
Damn I wish I had known about the party on Thursday! Flying in morning of.
Feel better soon Luke ❤ Really looking forward to your interviews and chats with John and Andrew- great idea!
Super cool news, Luke! Get well soon!
