Two Sizes of Muslin Dome Fronts Compared with Half and Full Diffusion.

Ғылым және технология

Meet The Gaffer #340. I thought the differences would be more dramatic, but my choice of stand-in head probably didn't help. CineMilled has introduced some fine new bleached and unbleached dome fronts in the 3ft and 5ft sizes. The quality of light that muslin provides is also interesting for certain subjects. I hope to continue to explore this topic.

I echo my sentiments of my comment I made on Andrew's channel that I'm super stoked to see something I made on your channel! Been following you for years and so apreciate you view on things. I was excited and happy to send these off to you because I was excited to see what your take on our Muslin inserts would be. The subject of diffusion fabrics is fascinating yet also so much is in the eye of the beholder. So much we can all learn by listening and in this case watching each persons perspective on the subject. Thank you so much for your insights and the time you put into sharing this with all of us. Big fan! Thanks for the support and I'll continue to look forward to every new video!

I need to revisit this because the difference was more about change in stop than in quality… and the head didn’t help😆

@@meetthegaffer So far in my use and testing makes a big difference on actual skin. Also of note is Aputure calls thier 2 included fabrics “1-stop and 2-stop” and I found that loose term to be very inaccurate. I was expecting the muslin to block more light than it did. Again in my selection of muslin I matched what the industry leaders are selling. I certainly had thicker fabrics at my disposal…. So maybe I’ll make a thicker version…. If I feel it actually has a notable impact on softness as well.

Sorry for the delay, I'm sure you got them by now. It took us a bit longer than we hoped to get everything sewn correctly the way we wanted for a tight fit. We have plenty in stock now! Thanks for ordering!

Thanks Luke. I´ve found that some "Talent" I´ve worked with prefer a bleached/unbleached muslin instead of bead boards/foam boards as a bounce. Being that the muslin not so "dazzling".

I'm glad it wasn't just me and my limited experience regarding the faceted head. I 100% see how that head helps learning drawing, but I had a hard time grasping how the different diffusion was working with that subject. (It was also interesting how the shadow of the vertical black rod in the background close to the wall didn't show dramatic differences due to it being relatively far from the source and the angle of the diffusion.) One thing I definitely saw was how nice the warming is from the unbleached muslin. I haven't bothered stopping at a fabric store to just get a few yards but now I will to play with! Off topic, but it would be great to know how you rigged it to the outside of the window.

The window is framed in wood, so I just used push pins through the border of the 8x8.

Hi Thanks & God Bless bro - why is it that the 3ft dome on the shadow of the head looks brighter than the 5Ff which is a larger source?

I changed my exposure according to false color, so there may be slight discrepancies. I was looking more for light quality than matching exposure exactly. That may have something to do with it.

How did you like the quality of the unbleached front on skintone compared to 1/4 CTO? Roughly the same? Looks like a great thing to have on hand. Thanks.

Unbleached is more like a beauty type filter than a CTO, I think of it similarly to how many people will use Rosco's chocolate 99 filter on skin tones.

One thing I have been confused about using muslins is how is the WB set? Do you set it like 55k and take advantage of the warming qualities?
