    This rig represents MUSIC to me. Fun, no pretentious or snobbish foo-foo, an owner that knows what he wants. An owner that has gear long-term and not neurotically swapping components every few months. A MUSIC lover, not a STATUS or GEAR lover. And importantly: not someone that is in the industry selling you something.

Can't stand store bought systems, purchased in one shot. The most I have every bought at once is a power amp and pre amp. Everything else is one piece at a time and trail and error. Not efficient but in my experience gives the best end result.

    Nice setup. Those Maggies have the infamous Gunn mod. The hardwood frame is to absorb energy rather than re-radiate it like the factory MDF. Also uses a completely different crossover design.I think one key to getting vinyl to sound good (beside proper setup) is a vacuum record cleaner. Digital doesn't have to suck, now that engineers figured out a few years ago that the source of the sound being unpleasant in many ways was due to 'jitter'. I have heard digital playback system w/ newer ultralow jitter DACs that sound spectacular. I took a deep dive back into vinyl a few years back, and loved it, but ultimately sold it all, as I just didn't have the time. (Regs P3-24 + Denon high output MC)

    A nice system, very appropriate for the room size. Lot's of little tweaks to improve sound, but Scott has overlooked arguably the most important aspect...Speaker placement. The speakers need to be moved forward in front of the cabinet so that sound won't reflect off the sides, creating an unwanted early reflection.

    QUESTION: In the late 1980's I had a VHS VCR made by I think Panasonic that could be used exclusively as a recording tape deck. It's S/N specs were on par with CD players but recorded in analog. Does anyone remember them, do you think they were any good and should have been more popular in consumer audio systems, and does anyone know where I might locate one for purchase?!?! I thought it was a really nice piece of equipment for analog recording, Steve what do you think? 😎

  • @juliaset751

    @juliaset751

    5 жыл бұрын

    There was a digital audio recorder; it was made by Technics (Panasonic). It used VHS tapes and was strictly for audio, using an analog to digital converter, and then recording the digital audio on VHS tapes. It was supposed to sound really good, but never really became popular because it was an all in one unit. The preference at that time was to use a separate analog to digital converter and a VHS or Beta deck which could be easily replaced or fixed if there was a problem. I had a Sony PCM-F1 which was a separate unit.

    You guys are confusing several issues. Yes, VHS and Beta type formats have been used digitally. But it is ALSO true that VHS HiFi stereo is a helical scan (LOTS of tape) analog format that should be on par with big, fat reel to reel tapes. But HiFi nerds never really got into VHS that much.

  • @MichelLinschoten

    @MichelLinschoten

    4 жыл бұрын

    Vic Verdi Neither ... Adcom are great amps but lack protection circuitry. I know many will tell you “they rarely fail so no worries” If I give you a revolver with one bullet, and tell you to aim at your speakers . Would you ? I bet not. Then the crown 1002 xls its a good amp, it does have power however magnepans. Benefit from higher CURRENT amplifiers, not necessarily from higher wattages. And if you do want to go crown, go for the 1502 and up (I use a 2502xls to drive my 18inc jbl subs) reason I say this. You get somewhat better the numbers when passing up on the 1002. I also own magnepan mmgi, mg2 and the legendary tympani I been there too on amplifier choices.
