Meet Jeff, he has Zu speakers, a PrimaLuna pre, First Watt J2 amp...

Jeff lives near me in Brooklyn, he’s turned me onto lots of great music over the years.
I’ll follow up in a couple of weeks with a video of Jeff’s music picks.

Steve - I'm an avid follower and really enjoy your musings on all things in high end audio. You've really hit on a cool concept here - - audiophiles have an eager interest in the systems which we all build and invest in over time. It is simply fascinating to hear and see how we make the choices we do in audio gear given the modern world of infinite possibilities. More, more :-)

In the 80's my sister bought a JVC receiver that looked high end,was one of the first digitals, was low, sleek, and had brushed aluminum front and knobs just like's Jeff's. If you saw it today,it would still look great to the eye. Its also played at 40 watts some of the cleanest sound I ever heard. Bass so sharp your heart would jump. No matter what I bought later,I never came close to that. Quality is great to have.

And I have similar musical tastes as you do. Post Punk, Indie, Industrial. NIN, Ministry, Skinny Puppy. I am going to be running my tow channel system sans sub. Do you think the Soul Supreme will give me that visceral punch and dynamics in a small room, 12x10 with 8 foot ceilings? The Dirty Weekends do, so I am assuming the SOul Supreme's will as well.

What about the Bad Brains?! They’re definitely one of the 1st punk bands to integrate reggae into their hardcore/punk style of music since the late 70’s. They’ve always been one of my favs by far, as they’re one of the few bands who I actually own their entire vinyl catalog of full length 12” LP’s. A few of the rare 45’s are reissues, as I don’t have around a grand or more to buy the original pressings. I’m no completist when it comes to bands either. Sorry for going a bit off topic, but it would seem that Jeff has achieved perfect system synergy. That’s a huge thing! Just because everything may be high end, doesn’t mean it’ll work well together and sound amazing. I recently heard a system at my local HiFi store which cost close to probably 100K! I sat in the sweet spot chair, and eh.... It was alright, but I’ve heard $3,000-$5,000 systems that have rocked my world. Of course, the room has a lot to do with it too, but anyone who reads this will understand. 🤔🤗

We have many of the same musical tastes it seems. I stopped searching for great speakers about 8 years ago when Focal hit it over the moon with there 30th anniversary speakers. I first picked up a pair of Focal 807 V Ws which come with the W cone drivers from the Utopia line, along with the crossovers from the line as well. They're the piano gloss Carmen Red which are absolutely gorgeous. And musically, well, for the money you'd be hard pressed to find a set of bookshelf speakers under $5k that would beat them, even without the beryllium tweeter these sing and dance like a well choreographed pair. A few weeks ago I received an immaculate pair of used 826 V Ws in piano black from a guy on Audiogon. He included the matching center channel and a set of MIT Matrix12 speaker cables! Needless to say I'm ecstatic, especially considering I paid just over retail price of the Matrix12s for the entire package including shipping:) My speaker needs are fully met for my office and media room now. I may go to a set of Electra BEs in a few years time, but it will be a "just because" purchase and not a filling a gap purchase. Merry Christmas Steve and friends, and long love great audio gear🔉😊🎅

It took a while to get my wife turned on to reggae ( via Jack Johnson:-) but we now jam some reggae influenced music together with friends. Likewise, also grew up in London (alongside the Jamaican community) and reggae, roots, dub, ska, two tone was a big part of that -- Horace Andy, King Tubby, Desmond Dekker, and on and on. Will check out By The Rivers, thanks for the pointer! For something more roots and dub, do check out British Band Alpha & Omega too... have had this in regular rotation for nearly 20 years now! kzread.info/dash/bejne/hH2Wwbh_fMvQnco.html

PrimaLuna, you don't see those very often. If I might upgrade (bump into a used amp) it is going to be a Jadis Orchestra (Reference) integrated.

@@MrStewbee Been to a high end audio show in 1999 in Veldhoven Netherlands. Here is for the first time I was knocked out of my shoes on how vinyl can sound. This was also the first time I was introduced to Jadis, pretty expensive for me back then but now I consider used Jadis as more or less the sweetspot (at least for me) regarding amplifiers. At the moment I got a cheap and cheerfull Synthesis Nimis integrated tube class A, very good value for money and a gateway for me to start listening to tubes. Jadis Orchestra on the to do list :)

Know anyone who ever used that J2 for bi-amping; like as tweeter and midrange amp? Class A amps are said to get hot. Is the J2 about the hottest running Class A amp you've used?

No, it’s not that powerful, 20 W per channel, so it’s not as hot as 100 W per channel amplifier, class A!

Very cool system, thanks for sharing it with us. I think that being anti anything is just a shame, since you’re willingly refusing to enjoy some of the possibilities this amazing hobby has to offer. I, for one, enjoy my two turntables (RP6 and Vintage Thorens TD 160),together with Naim Uniti Streamer. I love them both because they are different. Regards from Spain.
