Meet Roman Mars, Creator of 99% Invisible
Ғылым және технология
Meet Roman Mars, the creator and host of one of our favorite shows, 99% Invisible. It's a wonderful podcast that celebrates and obsesses over the overlooked design in our everyday lives. We visited Roman at his recording studio (ie. home office) to geek out over the hidden world of design, radio production, and storytelling through podcasting.

Heard him for the first time when 99pi debuted. And in my mind, that's the voice I should have been born with.

I absolutely love his laugh as well. This interview gives some context to the unaffected sense of joy and wonder that comes through in his laugh. ☺️
this is literally a 99% Invisible for 99% Invisible

Curry Dreams hello my fellow 1%
Okay, I'll say it. Roman has the sexiest voice on radio. Thanks for the great podcasts.
I'm 15, almost 16. My dad has been listening to this show for as long as I can remember. Every time we'd go on road trips this is what it would be. Seeing Roman's face after hearing his name for all these years makes me so happy. I really love this show keep it up.
Out of all the voices out of all the podcasts I've listened to for the past 15 years, his is my favorite voice. 99% Invisible always has very interesting content, totally recommend it.
99% is an amazing podcast series. Podcasts are a meritocracy and often one person’s vision. This is why I love them.
first time seeing Roman, i have been almost 2 years listening to 99PI wouldn't be weird if i say, i picture your face almost perfectly from the audio only. that's flippin' my mind blown

Hey Roman Mars, I'm studying english and I use to listen to your podcast every single night at the moment!! thank you
Been following 99% Invisible for a while now, loved this interview. Thank you so much!
As a retired Signing Engineer & Work Zone Standards Engineer for the State of Minnesota, I am extremely interested in Roman's interest in the W4-2 Merge Sign. I too was frustrated in the sign design and worked to get it changed, but it is a Federal Sign and my recommendations to them were dismissed many times. The primary reason the current sign is disturbing to the motorist is that unlike ALL other lane assignment signs, the W4-2 shows the shoulders of the roadway and not the traffic lanes. Other signs generally use an arrow to show the traffic lane and how it curves or turns ahead. I drew up an alternate design for W4-2 and presented them to my staff and superiors and they all agreed that my design was much more intuitive, but when presented to the FHWA, it was rejected - since this was several years ago, I do not remember if they had any reason for their rejection, besides their lack of interest at the time. I could email a copy of my design if you are interested - let me know.

***** I worked on and wrote signing standard's and there is a process for changing standards (especially Federal ones). It would have cost me my job if I would have gone ahead and tried to change the sign without approvals - but I guess self-employed podcasters don't have to worry about that!!!! It would be easier for you as PUBLIC too complain and start a groundswell to change it.
I love 99PI! A friend turned me onto it and I was hooked. Bite-sized informative and entertaining episodes about all kinds of topics, and Roman and his crew have great voices for the format.
Im really happy to have been able to listen to whats in the making of the best podcast around
Thanks for this, it's really cool to get a look at the person responsible for one the most interesting podcasts around. Do you intend on doing more of these? I'd love to see certain podcast hosts being interviewed.

wise words from Roman Mars
Thanks for introducing me to Roman, I love the content and can't wait to listen to them.
Really enjoyed this interview and discovering 99% invisible. Thanks!
Love 99% invisibile, Learned about it from Radiolab many years ago... so glad I took the suggestion and checked it out! Coin check!
first time hearing the podcast and getting hooked to it forever! thx!
Great interview, really enjoyed it despite never having heard of 99% Invisible. I'm about to rectify that.
Norm, Your great at doing 1on1 interviews! You need to bring this great participation into Still Untitled. I would love to hear more of your input when Will and Adam are around.
He's got a chill voice and very cool name. (and a great podcast - I've been binge-listening to old episodes of it!) But someone should turn loose some investigative reporters and find out if that's his real name or just a nom de guerre ("non de air"? "nom de microphone"?)
I didn't watch any of this, but I did listen.
It's interesting how Norm starts to take on Roman's cadence as the show goes on!
This was a great interview!
OMG I just love 99% Invisible and Roman Mars
I'm such a huge fan of 99pi. Great interview!
Great interview, thanks for this!
Thanks for the find
Best voice ever.
This is fascinating.
Thanks, Norm ones more you prove that you understand to let the person speak and guide them forward
I loved the "Numbers Station" Podcast :)
I was distracted this whole video by the creeping sensation that there was someone just behind me looming over my shoulder- the faces of the crew are shown in the reflective surfaces on the monitor and window.
This is exactly what I pictured his recording area to look like
He's just like what I imagined
"I'd never heard anyone say, 'Please go longer,' before." 😳 Welp I'm blushing.
the legend. always read the plaques
Is it weird that I've been listening to 99PI for years but always picturing the actor Michel Gill (president in S1 of House of Cards). Who happens to have a similar voice. Now I see what Roman actually looks like I'm not sure if I can shake the association of his voice with Gills face.
Love Roman.
20:00 100% true. Is that on Wikipedia below definition for podcasting?
I did enjoy this :)
Greatest analogy of all time, "I'd rather be herpes than ebola."
what a guy SICK channel he has made
Title sequences... I'm trying to like it on here, but can't seem to find it... So I liked it from Google Play. That work?
What an interesting fellow.
Marshall McCluhan comes to mind.💗 Ironically, I watched (mostly just listened) to this on KZread, instead of listening to a podcast. The Podcast is a “hot” medium.

never been a fan of podcasts. The only podcast i listen to (watch) are here on youtube. More convenient and this is where i have everything.

While I am listening to this, I am indeed doing something else. :D

In my mind I figured you looked like a short and skinnier version of Michael Jordan. Long time listener- first time seeing.

I find it a bit ironic that a man SO obsessed with great design has such a terribly organized work room/desk space. ...Especially while knowing that he and the room are about to be filmed and immortalized on the internet. Go figure.

Sounds like you think of "great design" as "how something looks". While that can be an element of design, I'll suggest that, for a space designed to make audio, "how well it supports making audio" is far more significant.
