Meet Roman Mars, Creator of 99% Invisible

Ғылым және технология

Meet Roman Mars, the creator and host of one of our favorite shows, 99% Invisible. It's a wonderful podcast that celebrates and obsesses over the overlooked design in our everyday lives. We visited Roman at his recording studio (ie. home office) to geek out over the hidden world of design, radio production, and storytelling through podcasting.

I'm 15, almost 16. My dad has been listening to this show for as long as I can remember. Every time we'd go on road trips this is what it would be. Seeing Roman's face after hearing his name for all these years makes me so happy. I really love this show keep it up.

Out of all the voices out of all the podcasts I've listened to for the past 15 years, his is my favorite voice. 99% Invisible always has very interesting content, totally recommend it.

99% is an amazing podcast series. Podcasts are a meritocracy and often one person’s vision. This is why I love them.

As a retired Signing Engineer & Work Zone Standards Engineer for the State of Minnesota, I am extremely interested in Roman's interest in the W4-2 Merge Sign. I too was frustrated in the sign design and worked to get it changed, but it is a Federal Sign and my recommendations to them were dismissed many times. The primary reason the current sign is disturbing to the motorist is that unlike ALL other lane assignment signs, the W4-2 shows the shoulders of the roadway and not the traffic lanes. Other signs generally use an arrow to show the traffic lane and how it curves or turns ahead. I drew up an alternate design for W4-2 and presented them to my staff and superiors and they all agreed that my design was much more intuitive, but when presented to the FHWA, it was rejected - since this was several years ago, I do not remember if they had any reason for their rejection, besides their lack of interest at the time. I could email a copy of my design if you are interested - let me know.

***** I worked on and wrote signing standard's and there is a process for changing standards (especially Federal ones). It would have cost me my job if I would have gone ahead and tried to change the sign without approvals - but I guess self-employed podcasters don't have to worry about that!!!! It would be easier for you as PUBLIC too complain and start a groundswell to change it.

He's got a chill voice and very cool name. (and a great podcast - I've been binge-listening to old episodes of it!) But someone should turn loose some investigative reporters and find out if that's his real name or just a nom de guerre ("non de air"? "nom de microphone"?)

Is it weird that I've been listening to 99PI for years but always picturing the actor Michel Gill (president in S1 of House of Cards). Who happens to have a similar voice. Now I see what Roman actually looks like I'm not sure if I can shake the association of his voice with Gills face.

Sounds like you think of "great design" as "how something looks". While that can be an element of design, I'll suggest that, for a space designed to make audio, "how well it supports making audio" is far more significant.
