Yeah. And it's not like that in most applications glass couldn't be substituted by a certain kind of plastic aka carbon based polymer, which is also not as aged in it's 1st discovery as glass. Otherwise you also could name our time concrete or steelage still...

This may just be an ad in the end, but materials science or science company ads in general always make the informative and interesting ones.

That's because in order to sell product, they need to answer the question of "what's so great about this that I'd spend money on it?" and nothing engages the mind quite like whiz-bang "whoa, that was cool!" demonstrations.

This ad is so good, I’ve watched it multiple times since it’s come out. Fantastic job Corning, more companies should think like you do!

This video came out in 2014. Its 2019, and the glass back of my phone still cracks if it comes in contact with earth air.

Lol. Well, whether we like it or not every major phone company runs a monopoly on us. If they invented phones with indestructible screens and bodies, yet with a timeless all-great look, with an interface that is very fast and virtually never prone to age..they wouldn't make money. Why? You buy that phone once, you won't need another. It's all marketing my friend. They make money from our ignorance and by us simply being slaves to their hierarchy. They can do those things I mentioned but they NEVER will. This theme pretty much goes with everything money can buy in terms of every day to day technology (phones, computers, tablets, tv's, etc....), cars, clothing, the list goes on.... Even Corning is running a monopoly. They're not going to ever share with anyone as to how their glass is made. They will depend on people who just want their product, with no intention to learn the trick of the trade. I personally hate that idea. Nikola Tesla himself was killed because he wanted to create a form of technology that would provide the world with free wireless-energy. They killed him for that, plus many other things he knew and discovered. I'd hate to be the one to say it but we live in a nasty world.

Actually, what they used starting at about 6:00 is called EL (electroluminescent) wire, which contains NO glass whatsoever. It is thin copper wire coated with phosphor, wrapped with another fine wire. Pretty cool stuff, but NOT glass at all. Fairly inexpensive stuff that you can buy all over the Internet. These guys should know better.

Really great commercial guys. Exactly the kind of ad I like, showing off the product itself instead of just saying it's amazing and flashing famous people in front of the camera. I was already aware that Corning did cool stuff, now I know they have a pretty cool marketing dept/contractor too. GJ. Hopefully part 2 covers the sustainability and environmental impact of these technologies as that's rather important these days.

Net Neutrality sounds good, if you don't know how the internet works and why Netflix, Amazon, Google, KZread, ... all want it so badly. Billionaires don't want it for your benefit. Together, Netflix and KZread are more than half of all download traffic in the US; They should have to pay for that. Net Neutrality will allow them to force out competition with sheer volume and force you to pay for their traffic even if you don't use their service. They're trying to make the Internet Service Providers out to be the greedy bad guys, because they don't want to pay their fair share. I'd rather my Netflix bill go up because Netflix has to pay more, than my internet bill go up because Netflix doesn't have to pay more.

Absolutely, Netflix, Google etc.. are for net neutrality because it's good for their business, just like an ISP controlled internet is good for the ISPs who also have TV/phone packages, I have no idea WTF that's got to do with Net Neutrality being best for the progression of society Al Brautigam Google (and their subsidiaries), Netflix, Amazon, Wiki etc... already pay for Internet access and they pay A HUGE amount of money for it due to their bandwidth requirements, we as consumers pay for internet access so we can ACCESS the internet. Both parties are already paying, if only the big, established businesses can pay the levy for unhobbled internet, they're the only ones that people will use. Video providing ISPs do not want Netflix etc to succeed, they're taking huge chunks of the viewerships (and with it ad revenue) from those video providing ISPs, hence Verizon hobbling their customer's access to Netflix, ComCast hobbling HBO Go on Playstation etc.. The scary parts come when they decide that business X is saying too many negative things about them, so they block/restrict access to their website/content and with these companies being so politically active (bribes and misinformation) how long until political activist groups start having their content blocked. People are already being arrested for protesting (the most basic of human rights). I don't know where you get your information but IMO, it's not from sources that are looking to help you but rather to use you to help themselves. If what already exists is the best system for the internet, why is the internet so ridiculously crap in America, where they've been so anti-neutrality? Why is there no choice for 'high speed (which isn't very high speed btw) internet for the majority of people in a socio-economic system based on competition? "I'd rather my Netflix bill go up because Netflix has to pay more, than my internet bill go up because Netflix doesn't have to pay more. " Why should netflix have to pay extra so that you can use the bandwidth you're paying for to consume their content. You're paying for internet access, it doesn't matter wtf you do with that bandwidth, you're paying for it, and netflix is paying for their service. You're advocating for a system where you pay your ISP for internet access then indirectly pay them again to use that internet access for a few specific services. You're paying twice (three times if you include the internet Netflix is already paying for and passing the cost on). I really don't think you understand how the internet works. Personally, I've been a tech geek for over 20 years and have studied and worked as a network engineer.

I’ve visited the Corning Museum . It really covered everything from modern art installations to ancient history to scientific developments. It was so much fun. 10/10 would go there again

Considering this is basically just a long advert it's surprisingly interesting. I was lucky enough to study under a professor of glass chemistry twenty or so years ago and it's remarkable how much it's come on since then.

Love when these gentlemen work together.

Outstanding to see this again. I have been waiting for flex phones and the reality is Corning inc is on point than and now. The properties of glass are endless.

Willy Yappy Graphene most likely will not enter the common market for an excess of 40+ years due to cost, production time and cost, and need for the actual production of graphene. Graphene just isn't needed in this age. Yeah, it may conduct electricity 0.25% better, but that's not sufficient enough to replace every electrical powerline with it. It's​ just not needed.

​ Ruben Zikarsky I mean, 40+ years is not that far away for the tale end of an age. Your right though, conducting electricity .25% better is not worth it to replace powerlines. Thats just a dream scenario type stuff, and not necessary at present. However its capability to help store power in conjunction with other materials is much more of interest, and the resulting longevity of the batteries with their ability to maintain charge couple that with being able to charge and pull power at faster rates and it, makes it a very useful material, once you've got a cost effective manufacturing method. Power storage has always and is still currently a big problem. Excess power in power grids is wasted, and considering the reliability issues with solar and wind makes them a good coupling material. Power storage is sorely needed in this age, and if graphene can do it, then its fair to say that Graphene is sorely needed (although there's definitely other materials that could also do it) Imagine electric cars that can charge in a few minutes (or seconds) vs hours, can go much further on a charge, and has a longer life span, and you see why having a potential super capacitor is useful.

I know this is an ad but its also a genuinely interesting video. Bravo to the team that put this together. Wish more companies thought like this.

masso172 the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus actually use Sapphire Glass, which is actually far superior to Gorilla Glass, since it uses synthetic sapphire.

Nameless Hmm, Sapphire glass may be superior than gorilla glass in certain applications but I think it was not very wise to use it on a phone. Hence why many people celebrate whenever they drop their phone and the screen doesn't crack lol

masso172 The problem with your last statement is that there are only a handful of phones that use sapphire glass and not gorilla glass, I can only think of two off the top of my head, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus (counting those as one) and the concept Ubuntu phone that I don't believe ever saw an actual release. Edit: The problem with your argument is also a flaw in my argument, since so few phones have used sapphire glass, it hasn't had much real-world testing, I know Corning has made tests comparing the two (Sapphire glass and Gorilla Glass) but for me those test prove about as much as synthetic benchmarking for PC hardware. It's exceedingly simple to design a test to favor your own product versus a product from a competing company.

Well thank you Corning, theres a reason I added Corning, NY to my USA 4K scenario in open transport tycoon in my latest project. I of corse added a glass workshop there.

This took me a while to realise it was advertisement. Either way, really high production. I liked it.

+Cotonetefilmmaker Yup, I would have loved to see this outside of an advertisement so they could have gone into more depth on certain things such as the history and the evolution of the glass creation process or modern types of glass and how their made compared to these new ones and so on. But I feel with the time constraints it had it did a fairly decent job. I for one didn't know ancient Rome had glass in some buildings or that older railroad lights were susceptible to breaking in the rain. It makes logical sense thinking about it, but it's something I never considered or learned about till now.

Then I would say that it was a good advertizement. I've seen a small trickle of advertizements lately that make me feel better off for encountering them. We should encourage such positive messages to guide advertizers into giving the public what they want :)

I work in telecom on backbone networks and while I've seen dozens of technical videos on fiber optics it's cool to see them doing this stuff. And I don't think they are selling out at all; they are making money in their field doing what they do best, for an unquestionably cool high tech product.

Fascinating, that's some kick ass glass!!

I've been telling people for over a decade that we live in the Glass Age. With IT and other computer fields and engineering you'll notice how the development and application of silicon has shaped our world more than any other element since the 1950s.

Let's be hones, people, at this point, we are not eve talking about ads: these are sponsored popular science docs. A company paid it, we all know a company did it to promote their area of expertise, yet the science and knowledge is there cause that's the basis for the engineering the company works with. In conclussion, I undertand the motivation of this, therefore I can somehow trust and definitely enjoy.

Wouldn't the fact that we are watching and learning about the glass age prove that it's more likely the Information Age?
