Mechanicum Faction Review: Knights (Horus Heresy)
In this video, I tell you all about Mechanicum Knights in Horus Heresy: Age of Darkness.
I walk through the basics of Knights, deep dive into the four Mechanicum-specific Knight choices, and talk about weapon choices and how to get the most out of these towering war machines in your games of 30k.
This is the sixth and final part of a series covering Mechanicum Rules, Units, and Army Builds - don't forget to check out the others!

The writers completely screwed up the Atrapos in this version… it’s supposed to be a knight and titan hunting Cerastus and yet it’s poor in this role. The phase cutter ranged mode is a joke - the marine carried las cutter (tiny by comparison) is superior. Great and thought provoking video as always 👍
The Atropos is such a weird knight but I love it. The writing for is super strange because the Lascutter’s rules means it only gets one swing in close combat plus the stomps, so it’s melee profile overall is much weaker than other Knights. Overall it’s incredibly fun but feels bizarre compared to every other option Absolutely terrific work on this video; agree with a massive chunk of the review of everything you listed.

Thanks! Ill definitely be getting an Atropos at some point for the fun factor of vortexing people, even though its far from fabulous!
Waiting for the Household Knights. If I do Mechanicum I'm running a Knight Army. Waiting for the video to decide.
So, from your summary, their primary value is as a fire-magnet, absorbing enemy firepower. This makes the Lord of War VP interesting in adding to that role. Clearly, given that Knights are tough and have limited firepower, then shooting at them seems non-productive; as you say better to ignore them, absorb their punch and destroy other things. But.... in addition to the visual threat (it looks intimidating, so I must kill it), the punch they can deliver (which, while poor return on points expended for the opponent losing their models, still represents a real threat), the Knight also attracts fire because it is worth VP as a Lord of War, killing it could make the difference in netting someone the necessary VP, but equally wasting significant firepower in killing it may mean you give up a chance at victory. I suspect this is a happy rule design accident but still worth considering.
I think it's worth noting that the points limits don't apply when they're fielded as part of a household, so you can bring an Atropos or Asterius to a 1500 point casual game.

This video is in the context of taghmata but otherwise yes for sure!
I got a fully painted 40k Army of House Raven. As far as I know they already existed in the 31st millennium. Maybe I can use them here as well.

Yeah, the heraldry is a bit different, but Questoris Knights of all flavours are completely valid in 30K. I've found the Crusaders can work quite well if you've built them to be more specialised, since they are super tanky vs most shooting in 30K so they can be difficult to remove from the table in a gun fight.
Models that cannot their attacker have a special rule called our weapons are useless after the fight phase they can fall back voluntarily. At least that's how I understand it
singularity cannon doesn't leave a template behind that rule is part of the graviton pulse rule which this weapon does not have, only the vortex stays in play
So no Questoris or Armigur. When will you review them? Im considering a single knight to support my Imp Fists and looking for ways to use my questoris from 40k.
Can u run a purely knights army in 30k
The restrictions on Reactions for Super Heavys is weird. I can understand them ignoring infantry, 99% of dreadnoughts (only the Mhara Gal hits the 8W threshold), and SINGLE vehicles. But an entire squadron of tanks is flanking around your backside and your reaction is "Nah mate, it'll be fine"? Are these things being piloted by idiots? Looking forward to your comparison of the Legion Super Heavys to these.
Do note that a knight or titan doesn't lock you in combat see page 217 of the rulebook, you can just leave combat with them and shoot at them freely much like a tank

The Knight is never locked in combat. Does not say that the enemy unit isnt locked in combat. Very different thing. You cant escape the knight, but it can walk away from you. Unless you have another reference to contradict that?

those vehicles or other units in contact with them may freely move or declare charges outside of the fight sub phase and may target the knight or titan as part of a shooting attack. 3rd sentence from rule book under Knights and titans and asaults

I read this the same way that neither knight or other unit is locked in combat. I wish that the knight would lock other units in combat and I think that makes sense, hard to flee from a knight. However that is not how I was able to interpret the rules,anyone else have a option on this
@Hearesy

Its correct that the other unit also isnt locked, was a misread. Sadly :(
Ah, I thought the cerastus knight acheron would be in the Mechanicum book. Damn

It is, its under the questoris section. I only reviewed the mechanicum section - stay tuned!
Does the knight lancer have any rules in this book? Or only the ones you mentioned?
@matthewross3162

Yes, all the knights are in the book. The lancer is under questoris houses.

@@Hearesy Def buying one than. I love that expensive chunk of resin.
Where in the book does it say the knights have flare shields
“Find a way to make them work” sounds a little like trying to drive nails with a spanner. Yeah you can, but wouldn’t a hammer work better? 😊 Great content, as always. I imagine there’s someone else doing this kind of thing, but why bother looking?

Thank you! Some models are absolute, irredeemable crap (hi domitar) but the knights at least do *something* unique with a potential raison d’etre. So whilst it isnt optimal, this is HH, sometimes all you need is to know it *can* work to make the model worth a punt I think :)
Remember that suzerains can take thunder hammers.
do knights lock other units in combat though? p217 states "...Knights and Titans make Charge Moves. However, they cannot be locked in combat. Those Vehicles *or other units in contact with them* outside of the Fight sub-phase may freely move..." definitely sounds to me like knights can neither lock or be locked.

Yep, this was a misread! Shame :(
Sunder on S16 means you're able to re-roll 1s for armour penetration, due to 1 being an auto-fail.
@Hearesy
Жыл бұрын
Duh me. Of course. Senior moment!
@XorArch
Жыл бұрын
pretty sure that doesn't go for penetration rolls as long as your total of the dace roll and strength is equal or higher ten the Armour value you glance/pen
@Hearesy
Жыл бұрын
I was thinking this too, but after reading, theres nothing to suggest that. A 1 is a fail on any roll, I agree with Liam
@XorArch

@@Hearesy where does it say a 1 on a pen roll is a auto fail? It certainly isn’t a game wide rules as there are many roll’s where a roll of 1 is good (like characteristic rolls) On page 207 of the rulebook under armour penetration rolls it does certainly not mention that rolling a one on the pen roll fails even if you would normally penetrate the armour.

Dice rolling section, start of the book, roll of 1 always fails.
The advocation of the wanton sacrifice of a sacred Knight chassis even for the purpose of destruction of the enemy, is blasphemy in the eyes of the Omnissiah! Really sad to see the downfall of the knight to such a degree. I've had a half-built, magnetised Styrix in a box for ages, waiting for me to have painted enough Mechanicum (or Iron Hands) to use it. It's a hard sell to do so now. And the Atropos las cutter, good grief, what a shambles the rules for that are. Regarding the issue of WS, I don't mind this so much. It makes sense that this big, relatively ponderous machine is going to have a hard job hitting a nimble space marine with that whopping great chainsword, or a stomping foot.
Ignores Siege Tyrants, dies to Siege Tyrants. I dunno they seem very weak.
Brutal should work like exo-shock, brutal is a stupid rule as is.
Didnt buy this book, was so disappointed by the legion books I didnt want another low quality book. I can see this book being updated very fast, nothing really works in this book.

@@Hearesy It's mainly the layout in them that sucks, not having relevant Special Rules or Wargear listed under units that have unique wargear or Special Rules when there is space to do so is very irrtating; and the book's index/glossary isn't very good especially given the sections are laid out in a pretty confusing order.

Sad times that this is one of their best laid out and indexed books for years and still has these problems, haha :(
