I had several questions about my Meal In A Jar video regarding where I found my recipes, do I have books on this, how do I come up with them. This video is hopefully going to help you follow the same process to make your own!

    Hello I just discovered your channel. I too buy Thrive and love the products. I also make meals in a jar often because I only cook for me. Here's something that you may want to know...as soon as I open my can of Thrive I put the oxygen absorber in a Canning jar that I am going to add the contents from the can and it does seal and reseal every time I open and close the jar. Please know that you can reuse them until they stop reselling. Just don't leave them unattended or open to the air. When you put it in the jar immediately put the lid on until you can add the contents. Hope this helps!

    Thank You Vickie! I also care for several beloved dogs. I am very tired, often not remembering to eat or just not interested to eat because I'm exhausted. Meal in a jar is a really good thing. If I understood you correctly, I may purchase some from you, so I will be looking at your website. You are a great, caring Mom! Blessings!

    Thank you for the informative video. When our kids grow up & the nest is empty, it's often wasteful to keep buying foods like we did when our kids were home. Even when you have one home in high school or college, a LOT of food can be wasted simply because they're busy, and those things you think you're going to eat sits in the refrigerator and sadly often goes bad. It is so much more economical to buy dried foods, make up some meals in jars or pouches, or simply mix them from the containers themselves. A LOT of the pre-made meals are full of noodles, which some of us rarely eat, so it's a disappointment, and rather frustrating, to look for pre-made meals for camping, for emergencies, etc., and so many are filled with pasta. Those with food allergies to wheat have a terrible time as well. I love that you can buy the components and put them together in a jar or a mylar bag, similar to military MREs, which aren't quite as bad about being full of noodles! I think the money saved by not having the fat on meats, not tossing food that goes bad, etc. will likely make up for the price? It would be helpful to know how much in weight for instance, the meats come to when rehydrated. You can also get a food dehydrator and make your own dried foods too, or if you're really into it, you can buy a freeze drier. They are expensive, BUT even one of those would certainly pay for itself in time. They are great to have around if you have fruit trees or a garden, an orchard, a neighbor that has fruit trees, a garden, chickens, ducks or quail, or even if you hit the sales at thr market, or simply buy fruits and vegetables in season, then buy some extras to dry or freeze dry to enjoy when they aren't in season, or when the birds aren't laying eggs. Thanks for sparking some ideas! Great video!

    I agree with you about the purchased meals. So many are full of pasta or rice, and you are paying a premium for fillers. I like knowing what is in mine, and choose freeze dried or dehydrated ingredients that don’t have any kind of additives. If it says chicken, I just want chicken! And although freeze dried foods do cost a bit to purchase, when you break it down by serving, it isn’t as bad as it sounds. I also have a dehydrator, and make my own dried foods when I can (I’m off grid, and the dehydrator, although not a huge energy user, does usually require power at night when we aren’t making any). So I don’t always get to use it like I would like to. I am very happy that this video gave you some ideas. Thank you for watching!

Raising pigs for their meat and have 11 tomato plants that are producing as well as many pepper plants and squash. I love using the vacuum sealer for jars. I use mine a lot, although sometimes they take a few tries. It is usually because I am reusing a lid, or because there is something powdery that got caught up on the rim. Just keep at it, and you will love it!

    Have you tried the cheese powder? That might make your beef & mac meal a little more cheesy too. I would still keep the shredded but Thrive and Amazon both have cheese powders. I sure enjoy watching your meals in a jar videos. I have made a few and have several of the books you suggested. Thank you for taking the time to share with us.

    9/20/18......I am a city born/raised girl---ATL---who retired & moved to central FL almost 5 yrs ago. I have just "discovered" prepping on YT & like the idea of mason jars for storage. I JUST NOW watched your great but simple video Meals In A Jar & am def going to make up some for now + for starting my mason jar canned storage. I have been buying a few items every week to begin a small prep pantry.. ...so I have some soup/vegs/fruits/meat cans + some prepacked rice/tuna in my prepper kitchen cabinet. I'm going to find/buy mason jars & lids today so I can dry can some items.....& also find some prepper food items so I can make these 2 meals that are on this video. I've subscribed & I will chevk to see if you have other YT videos. I am a great cook but I have NEVER learned old fashioned canning/preserving....so I know that I learn best by immitation & taking good notes/keeping records. THANKS for such easy teaching & explaining as you go from step to step---it makes it much easier & interesting for me. As a single lady I am responsible for my future & my rescue dog---so I appreciate all the info/tips I can get---esp about SMALL prepping b/c I am just 1 person & don't want to have wasted leftovers with no way to safely keep/eat them with no refrigeration.

    Hello Eileene, and welcome! It can seem overwhelming when you start the prepping journey, but it really is just one step at a time. Canning can sometimes seem especially intimidating, but it is a series of steps. There are some great videos on KZread for canning, showing the process, and also recipes. I would caution you to be sure to always double check recipes against safe, approved recipes from Ball canning books, or nchfp.uga.edu/. Some of us use recipes that aren’t “approved”, but we have done our own research, and weighed the risks for our families, and most of us responsibly state that in our videos. There hasn’t been much research done in many years due to lack of funding, so it doesn’t always mean that these recipes are unsafe, it means they haven’t had funds to test them! That being said, I LOVE canning, I love being able to put back foods on my shelf, and I know exactly what is in them! Please let me know if you have questions, and if I can help, I will.

I am slowly getting my things together to start doing meals in a jar because I am worried about the economy and I have 7 granddaughters and 1 grandson that I want to be sure they have food to eat, not to mention their parents.

I don’t know the grandchildren’s ages, but maybe get them involved?

    Hi Tammy, thank you so much for the encouragement! As far as a dehydrator, I had one of the round ones for years before I got my Excalibur. My one piece of advice is to get one that allows you to adjust the temperature. Very important! I would also get the best that you can afford, because there is a difference. Best option is if you can find one at a thrift/second hand store. They don’t have to be new! In this video? Yes, it is Thrive. I have ideas for a few more meals in a jar, just haven’t found time to make the videos yet. Hopefully soon...

    I just checked out the nutrition label on the meat. To 24 g of meat, it says to add 237 ml of water, which is a ratio of about 1:10 by weight. So the 600 g can reconstitutes to 6600 g, which is about 14.5 lb. At a retail value of $36.39 for the 600 g, that works out to about $2.51 a pound. Even if the ratio is off a bit, it looks like a good deal to me.

    Not that far fetched. I have some left over lots after dry canning. So I take and layer beans. Then rice, then dried. Green beans. Some times . Even lintels for soup. With broth cubes in separate packs to make broth. Even some salt/pepper packs. Verry reasonable. army boy used to go the field with MREs so why not make my own. A bit of water to put them on the boil. Tks sgt williams retired

    The desiccant moisture absorber has the same desiccant as some silica cat litter products. I don't know why people call it oxygen absorbers; in fact, I see it called that by the company selling it. When in fact it doesn't absorb oxygen it actually absorbs moisture. Lastly, silica can be heated up to refresh like new when we heat the rock hot enough to evaporate the moisture within.

  • @VickiesCountryHome

    @VickiesCountryHome

    5 жыл бұрын

    Actually that is not correct, and if you feel them you can tell the difference. Yes, desiccant packets are made of silica beads, and they absorb moisture. You will find them in some dried foods, herbs, and many other packages. However oxygen absorbers contain iron powder. You will immediately feel the difference. Instead of freely moving beads, they are heavier for their size, and usually more firm feeling. The packets are designed to allow air to be drawn toward the iron powder, but not allow the iron powder to escape. They are good for one time only, and then must be discarded.

    FYI - DIY Instant / Minute Rice: Cook a big batch of rice. ( I use a rice cooker.) When done, let it cool. Then spread on dehydrator trays. (I use an Excalibur 9-tray). Dry till brittle/crisp. To break apart clumps, put in a plastic bag and gently pound it with whatever is handy. I use a rubber mallet that's dedicated to kitchen use. Store mine in mason jars with or without vacuum sealing depending on how long I want to keep it in storage. To re-hydrate: Equal parts of rice and boiling water. Let sit until water is absorbed. Or simply toss desired amount in a simmering pot of soup.
