    Make sure to store the water or broth you need to prepare these with your jars! In some emergencies you may not have water. Also foil pans are nice to have in those situations so you don't have to waste your water resources for cleaning the pan.

    I have a different take on what to eat first. In previous emergency situations of electricity outages, we learned to eat refrigerated and quickly perishable foods first, putting a few frozen foods into the fridge to help keep the original food cold while they were thawing themselves. Continue rotating frozen foods in fridge a little at a time. Or as much as you can eat in a few days. Shelf stable foods should be your last option for obvious reasons. (Unless your shelf stable foods needed to be eaten because they were already months past their shelf life)

    Could you freeze write anything with a freeze dry machine I found one on Amazon all my vegetables meats?

  • @wickedprepared

    @wickedprepared

    Жыл бұрын

    Look carefully, I have a feeling what you are looking at on Amazon is a dehydrator. Sometimes they are sneaky and market them so people think they will freeze dry. I could be wrong but I've never seen a real freeze dryer sold through Amazon. Dehydrators are nice to have too though. You can dehydrate many things, fruits and vegetables, meat in a dehydrator becomes jerky. Both freeze dried and dehydrated foods can be used in meals in a jar, but it's important to know the difference as it will affect things like shelf life, cook time and water amounts. A meal in a jar recipe should specify if an ingredient is freeze dried or dehydrated. If you switch between the two you will have to do some experimenting with the things I mentioned like product amounts, water amounts and cook times. In this video I talk about some of the differences between dehydrating and freeze drying so you might find this helpful: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZYuEyLlworiwZso.html. And here are links to a couple different types of freeze dryers so you can compare with what you're seeing on Amazon: stayfreshfreezedry.com?sca_ref=2775129.2RLQ6OMJXU affiliates.harvestright.com/1812.html I hope this has been helpful!

    Here are a couple resources that might help: Chart: ltl.is/hz9kf5x This book: : amzn.to/43Hz8KI Remember food keeps its original structure when it is freeze dried so its measure for measure. Dehydrated foods shrink so you would use less to equal the same amount of fresh.

    Can you use dehydrated food?

  • @wickedprepared

    @wickedprepared

    Жыл бұрын

    You can use dehydrated foods in jar meals, but they are not totally interchangeable. Dehydrated foods will need different amounts of water and time to rehydrate, cook and soften. They also swell up more so the amount you use would be different. So it's best to use recipes that are designed for and tested with dehydrated foods. If you try to make swaps you just may have to experiment a little to get it just right. Some of my recipes may have some dehydrated ingredients so I do try to specify whether it's freeze dried or dehydrated. I'm going to be working on coming up with some recipes using only dehydrated because I've had a few people asking about that.

    I have a question: When you say that these meals in a jar last for years on the shelf, does that mean that the heavy cream powder and sour cream powder, etc. will not go bad in there? I know you use an oxygen absorber, for long term storage, but those powders containing fat don't last more than a year or so. Does the oxygen absorber keep it from going bad? I am new to these jar meals. Last winter, I made me some hot cocoa with some heavy cream powder, and it tasted bad. Sure enough, I checked the package and it had expired. I was just worried about my jar meals with the heavy cream powder in them!! Thanks! PS Your meals in jars are delicious. We have liked every one we have tried, so far. :)

    If freeze dried it should last well over a year if packaged correctly. Jars should be vacuum sealed with an OA in them. OA’s do not “seal” the jar.

    Can canned beans be dehydrated?

    Why dehydrate canned beans as they keep years and you don’t need to rehydrate them.

    Have you tried to make your own lime juice powder (or things like that) in your freeze dryer? I try and make as much as I can considering I am still going to need to buy so much. I made my own sour cream powder and it turned out great

    I haven't tried that yet although I do have some organic lemons I got on sale blended up and in the freezer waiting to go in. We have a list a mile long of things we want to do in the freeze dryer! So far just because of time we have mostly been doing things that either we can't easily find commercially, or things that we got either for free or at a really good deal, to preserve them. But we are definitely planning to try all those things when we get to them! Thank you for sharing your experiences we love to hear it! ❤️

    If you don't want to use Thrive Life or Amazon I think you may have to freeze dry them yourself, I haven't seen anyone else offering them commercially for sale.
