    If you haven't tried FORJAR lids, you really need to. I. LOVE. THEM. Their prices are very competitive & I haven't had a single lid issue with the ones I've used and have definitely had lid failures with Ball in the last year or so. It's 9/25/22 and I got a notification that their prices were going to have to go up some in the next few days. I'm sharing a 1000 lid order with a friend - that gives us each 250 of wide & 250 regular size. The increase is set to happen on 10/1/22 so now is a good time to try them! I won't be using Ball lids at all from here on out. The ones I have already used are being repurchased for fridge & dry, vacuum sealing. Happy canning!

    I've gotten lucky with food clearance at our Walmart but it's hit and miss! Sometimes it's just a mass of personal care items and the like. If I have time when it's stuff like that I'll go through and scan things with the Walmart app and my Ibotta app. Sometimes things come up cheaper than what they're marked, and I can sometimes find Ibotta Rebates for them that make them even cheaper or even free/money makers. I wish I had more time to do that!

    Thanks for the reminder on the Thrive coupon. My newest (and hopefully last) grandbaby is now starting to eat foods so the squash, broccoli, applesauce and a few others are perfect preps for her. I was able to add a second shipment this month as the Lord ALWAYS provides and my Etsy shop is doing incredibly well. I am determined to pay off my van almost a year and a half early and this month I slapped down a MAJOR payment on it. Soooo very thankful and Blessed!! I keep my extra oxygen absorbers in a mason jar but I have a brake bleeder and the jar toppers that I suck the air out of the jars before storing. LOVE that thing!!

    With inflation we are all dealing with less extra money. If all you can manage is $15 a month then maximize what you can get. Rice, raman and beans are an excellent supplement to whatever you may be able to get at the grocery. In my area, Walmart has all the basic canned veggies, including various beans, for no more than $.78 a can, some less. Dried beans and rice are also very cheap. Do what you can and you'll be better off later.

    Jara, if you open say a meat can from thrive or azure, then what is the shelf life for that opened can?

  • @wickedprepared

    @wickedprepared

    Жыл бұрын

    Most of the freeze-dried meats have a shelf life of one year once opened. The one exception I can think of is the pulled pork and that is only 3 weeks after opened. If I don't use my pulled pork immediately in meals in a jar with oxygen absorbers, then I'll put my unused portion in the freezer to prolong it. Azure is a little different they don't have much for freeze dried foods. They do sell lots of meats but they're fresh/frozen meats. I get a lot of bulk dry foods there and I do repackage them because their packaging is not really long term packaging like Thrive's cans.

Does anyone have a suggestion were or how to store the cold storage items??

  • @wickedprepared

    @wickedprepared

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Boss Lady! By cold storage do you mean refrigerated items or more like root cellar type items like potatoes and rutabaga? What we do is store shelf stable versions of most of these items if we can. We keep shelf stable cartons of milk for short term, and a couple of powdered brands we prefer. We have powdered versions of sour cream, heavy cream, butter, etc. A lot of "rebel" canners can milk, cream and butter too, if that's something you're comfortable with, or you can purchase commercially canned versions of many of these as well. Meats and vegetables can be canned or freeze dried for long term storage at room temperature. This can be done at home or purchased commercially. If you dont already know how to can or freeze dry at home, there are tons of helpful videos out there and once you get started its pretty fun and simple! Honestly we do a mix of all these things. I find it's best to diversify when it comes to your food storage. And I definitely recommend trying and using everything you get for your food storage, that way you make sure you like it and are comfortable using it AND things stay rotated rather than just sitting there. You may find you prefer certain brands or forms of things. Growing a garden will be a great addition for you, and while you're waiting for gardening season maybe you could try growing sprouts or Microgreens which is done indoors in a short amount of time. Sounds like you're doing great, keep on going! ❤️

What are your thoughts on stacking cause I have your issue as well and that is space..I don't know myself who is right or wrong or if you both are. Just wanted to share / bounce that off of you and get your take on it. I learned some good stuff today so thanks again.

    You can not stack jars of home canned items. You can go two high if there is heavy cardboard in between them. I have canned for forty years. If you stack one jar on top of the other and the seal is broken it can cause a false seal. Follow the USDA guidelines. So important. I have never had a jar go bad. I have had two jars in forty years that didn't seal after canning but other then that no problems.
