Just ordered me a presto canner next month gonna get a dehydrator. I started prepping in 2019 purchasing can soups, chilli's etc. So if I leave in the Rapture which I have a ticket to go I'll be leaving my aethiest children plenty of food. That's the plan anyways. @Debbie G, please don't put the O2 absorbers in the sugar or vac seal it, because it has a tendency to turn into a brick when you do that. Storing it tightly sealed in a rodent-proof container should keep it good for a long, long time.

I LOVE dehydrating frozen. It's so convenient and fast. I went to Costco to get a big bag (or two) of frozen mixed veg...and they were revamping their freezer section. No veg. sigh. So I whirled up some fresh veg in the food processor and dehydrated the slurry, instead. Now I have lovely veg powder to add to soups, stews, and breads.

Excellent video for those who just figured out that they need food up quickly - not in a freezer that may not have electric to it for 3 days. Or even those who need to start from scratch today - Govt asking everyone to store up a months worth of food. Hey we actually eat a lot more than we think we do. And, water - storage says 25 gallons for ONE person for TWO weeks. That includes everything from cooking to bathing. You don't need to buy really expensive stuff in a can. Do it this way. Thanks Darcy.

I live in a humid place, so I dehydrated my items and keep most stored in one container with a smaller "working container." The working container is the one that gets opened frequently. When it needs to be replenished, I go open the larger container to refill the smaller. I find this protects the integrity better I live your videos, as they help me to use my foods in new ways. Thanks!

Oh my goodness! I have just finished using my dehydrator for the 2nd time as I am finishing up my 'harvest' (!) here in Australia. I have dehydrated leeks (which I did outside because...boy do they smell!!); zucchini, chillis, and tomatoes. I am so happy with the result but was unsure how to store them, so thank you for this vlog! Now I intend to dehydrate the contents of our favorite winter soups and make some meals-in-a-jar! I am going to look through your content to learn how to dehydrate meat. I love knowing that the nutrients are still in the foods (as opposed to canning them); and I really love how little space they take up so I can have so much more produce! I also appreciate you showing us how to re-hydrate the food! Thanks very much!

I've never dehydrated meat on camera - I don't do it. I prefer to purchase freeze-dried meat because it is more reliably shelf-stable (though I know you may not have that option where you are). Just know that dehydrating meat does not automatically make it shelf-stable (no matter what other people's experiences say), so the best option (though you can make that choice for yourself), is to store dehydrated meats in the freezer until you need them for short-term meals in a jar, projects or hiking/camping trips.

Awesome video once again! 💖 I discovered that some Dollar-25 stores have frozen veggie mixes ($1.25 for 16 oz) like the pepper and onion blend. So far in March, I have not noticed significant frozen food sales in my area, so I wonder if that cycle may be shifting for some stores. At any rate, I have been able to make pretty good side dishes with dehydrated frozen broccoli and dehydrated frozen peas. Once you said (in a previous video), "Think of it like steamed broccoli", that was a game-changer for me. Thanks so much for the soup recipe ~ it's definitely on the list! 😄👍

I think between '2020' and the economy since then, sales that we used to have just aren't there any longer - and we have to shift from that $1 bag of veggies being smaller and a little more 'on sale'.

I'm glad you mentioned that you didn't need to condition your veg. I'm a HUGE dehydrator, and make my own camping/backpacking meals. In fact, I have 10 different dehydrators including 2 9-tray Excaliburs, and over 40 Nesco trays and a couple different units. I have never conditioned. Every time I get asked why, I tell them you can't over dehydrate it, since it's simply drying out the moisture in your food. Once all of the moisture is gone, I simply run for another 8-12 hours and I have never had anything fail.

Well I *DO* recommend conditioning everything - especially for folks who are new or unsure about the process. But if you're experienced, you know you over dry, then it's up to you not to. But yes, I support it wholeheartedly and teach it constantly.

Great info! I’m realitively new to dehydrating! I did garden veggies this year! I made tomato pieces, crushed, and diced! Then I put them up for stews and soups! What I have used so far is really have enjoyed! Then I dehydrated peppers and everyone’s favorite was crushed red peppers! Did do slices of jalapeno but most of the crushed reds were hotter peppers! I wished I had known if it works for squash! I ended up freezing it! I also like to freeze whole peppers so that I can drop a whole one in my stew and get the flavor without the seeds! If two men will be here to eat I usually drop 1 per person for those that like it can eat the pepper! If no one eats it I can always just remove it!

Great video! My machines are so old and don’t have a temp control. I tend to move the trays around but they still work great. I’m trying to psych myself out of buying a new dehydrator. 😂

i have done my soup mix this way many times. just dump and go. so easy. I like tomatoes in mine so I add tomatoes. if I don't have any dehydrated or freeze dried I just use a jar out of my pantry.

Is there a link to a good resource for a list of foods and their dehydrated lifespan? Thank you for all you do.

  • @ThePurposefulPantry

All dehydrated foods have an optimal shelf-life of about 2 years (optimal meaning they may begin losing texture and quality over time after that, but are still okay). Proteins have no 'official' life span because of the possibility of rancidity and protein breakdown - your mileage will vary. Tomatoes, fruits, and other things have a little less than 2 years. You may find charts on the internet that are more specific, but as always - your time will vary depending on how you prepared it, how you store it, the temperature you store it, etc.

That looks like a good soup. I do similar and thanks to you and others I'm learning more tricks for my dehydrator. I got mine predominantly to make my own MRE's and food to take on adventures where I only need add water. I think I may do some meat overnight; the thing is I was going to do Lamb but it has a high fat contant even frozen in the bags. I'm not sure about that. I do have chicken, turkey, lots of salmon, beef in chunks and lots of frozen and mince frozen. I tend to leave them as they are but for my meals, I will need to dehydrate them. I am planning on making several meals per month to make the options better. So far, I've been just cooking them as fresh, vacuum packing and freezing them, but for weight issues I'm going to dehydrate them. (I don't want to be carrying large weights of food all over the UK and EU). My cycle adventures can go further then. Thank you for your great videos.

Don't know about anywhere else but here in the mid east, sales of much of anything is a thing of the past. Even sale flyers have been cut in half and sale items aren't anything useful. Don't get me started on coupons.
