McLaren F1 - BTS with DTS - Ep. 5
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In its day, the McLaren F1 seized headlines for its record-breaking top speed, but in reality, that was never one of the car’s performance objectives and it is actually one of the least interesting features of the car. In this video, Derek Tam-Scott discusses many of the more interesting parts of the F1.
Such as the fact that the car’s designer, Gordon Murray, tried to be allowed to sit in the car while it was crash tested. Or the fact that it’s almost exactly the same size as a Porsche Boxster. And 10 inches shorter than a modern 911, 2.5 feet shorter than an XJ220, and 700 pounds lighter than either. Or the fact that the production manager for the car once spent an entire weekend going to grocery stores looking for the perfect eggplant (well, aubergine) to match its color at the request of the customer who had ordered a car. And much more.
The car is of course one of the most revered and desired cars of all time. Derek asks (and answers) whether it’s overhyped or whether the car truly does deserve the attention it receives. He also explores the origins of the car, starting with Gordon Murray’s Formula 1 cars at Brabham and McLaren, and on through the development of the F1, including why the car is powered by a BMW Motorsport engine. In the course of this discussion, he reveals the almost innumerable reasons why the car is so unlike any other car before or since, a key part of its enduring legacy.
BTS (behind the scenes) with DTS:
Derek Tam-Scott’s spirit age is excess of 75 years old, and nowhere is that clearer than his taste in cars. At age 16, he went to work at one of the United States' foremost vintage car dealers, which cemented his elderly taste. Now with a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving, and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced many of the world’s most iconic cars. And even liked some of them.
Most of the car enthusiasts of Derek’s generation (and well, let’s be honest, even a generation or two before him) don’t have much experience with the magic of vintage cars prior to the 1980s, and therefore lack the knowledge and exposure to get genuinely excited about them. The goal of BTS is to give an insider’s perspective on why these cars particularly are great...or at least interesting and noteworthy. Derek brings his encyclopedic knowledge and broad experience together to contextualize these cars to give the audience understanding of both why it matters, and what it’s actually like to experience the cars.

I was fortunate enough to see F1 chassis No. 001 being driven on public roads in Woking, Surrey. The car was being driven to Park Lane, London in 1994 to be shown at McLaren’s tiny showroom located on Park Lane which I visited several times and there it remained for several years. A tiny motor car that carried huge presence and pure, uncluttered beauty. Videos and pictures don’t do the F1 justice but I have to say this video comes pretty bloody close and loved every second of it, particularly integrating modern footage with awesome engine sounds and original footage of the cars early conception to construction and testing, could have watched more and all day long, never get bored of the McLaren F1. it is so beautiful and well designed that it doesn't look dated at all, only the lights assembly and the wheel size would make it look older than a modern sports car. What a magnificent thing, I wasn't even alive when this came out and it is probably my favourite car
The F1 has and forever will be my favorite car. When I first saw this car on a poster as kid it left a permanent impression and I've loved it ever since. I can only hope that one day I get a chance to simply see one of these in person. It genuinely is the greatest car ever made.

@@MrCarGuy yeah ! The F1 is my favourite car but what I've realised from a lot of reading/videos and the Best Motoring video is that it was never optimised for the track. It has a soft suspension and rolls a lot, as such it needs a really good driver to control it's twitchiness and be fast around a track. The brakes also haven't aged well apparently. The '95 GTR added a rear roll bar to make it much better for the track and they modified the car quite a bit for '96 and '97(duh). It is definitely a road car first and I don't agree about the high downforce comments made in this video. Edit: I just noticed in the description that this car is for sale on their platform. Makes sense they don't say anything bad about it in the video. Better to treat this video as a love letter than anything close to a review.

That may be the best video I’ve seen about the greatest car ever made. That intake growl is spine tingling.
I've seen many videos about the F1 but this one is masterful.
The finest road-going machine ever conceived by man. A creation of absolute beauty, nearly perfect in every way.
I never realised how good an F1 looks in red until this video. The noise though, is pure magic. I was lucky enough to be there for testing when the West race cars were at the Nurburgring. A memory I treasure still.
There are so few good KZread films about the F1! Thanks ever so much for creating this for us, Derek!
That red is gorgeous
It’s hard to put into words the feeling I get seeing this car. I guess it’s another duality; the complete lust and awe of it, but also the realization that I will never be able to experience the perfection that this car embodies.
There are moments when you are truly speechless about something.... something that is too damn good to be real.... something that very well defies the laws of the universe.... This car is arguably the only engineering marvel in it's completeness in the history of science that has achieved the above. Like we say greats mentioning Ali, Pele, Bubka, Bolt, Federer, O'sullivan, Serena, Bradman ... in sports, this car is probably above all in it's ingenuity in the realm of engineering. Thank you ISSIMI for not only letting us know but also making us feel what it truly is... something that lies beyond being the Masterpiece....
I don't think we will ever see any vehicle as groundbreaking as the F1. With no disrespect to Gordon Murray's latest development, the T.50, the F1 was a stratospheric leap beyond what any manufacturer was producing in a road car of the era. Even today it still looks modern and still capable of out accelerating some modern rivals. Back then it was the proverbial mic drop of automotive engineering.
Quite possibly the most apt tribute to 'the perfect car'. Well chosen words combined and delivered in a symphonic tribute that a masterpiece like this deserves. Bravo.
Until this channel takes off it will be my secrete little gem.
