Lamborghini Miura S - BTS with DTS - Ep. 1

The Lamborghini Miura is often described as the world’s first supercar, but it was actually something of an accident. Rather than being ordered by Ferruccio Lamborghini, the Miura was the result of his talented and young engineers riffing on what they themselves wanted to make. They brought their ideas to Ferruccio, who told them to go ahead and develop the concept. When it was shown publicly, everyone absolutely lost it over the car. Because of this reaction, what was intended to be an exploratory concept became a production car, one which created an entirely new genre of car, forever altering the course of the sports car.
In this video, Derek Tam-Scott explores not just the story of the creation of the Miura and the significance of the car, but also what it is actually like to experience. And frankly, the drive is not all sunshine and rainbows: the Miura is famously challenging to correctly operate but what an absolute experience. And isn’t this what supercars are all about? Maximum experience, practical considerations be damned, and the Miura has all of that in spades.
BTS (behind the scenes) with DTS:
Derek Tam-Scott’s spirit age is excess of 75 years old, and nowhere is that clearer than his taste in cars. At age 16, he went to work at one of the United States' foremost vintage car dealers, which cemented his elderly taste. Now with a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving, and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced many of the world’s most iconic cars. And even liked some of them.
Most of the car enthusiasts of Derek’s generation (and well, let’s be honest, even a generation or two before him) don’t have much experience with the magic of vintage cars prior to the 1980s, and therefore lack the knowledge and exposure to get genuinely excited about them. The goal of BTS is to give an insider’s perspective on why these cars particularly are great...or at least interesting and noteworthy. Derek brings his encyclopedic knowledge and broad experience together to contextualize these cars to give the audience understanding of both why it matters, and what it’s actually like to experience the cars.

Derek, that was fantastic. You started out a little monotone, but as you got into the story, you became more emotional about the car's significance, and more again as you talked about how to properly drive this beautiful machine. I can only see these Behind The Scenes getting better as you get more under your belt. The emphasis on how to execute a smooth gearchange really was educational. Modern transmissions have synchros and clutches that are so forgiving that you don't have to finesse much at all. Watching you change from 2nd to 3rd, quick then slow on the double clutch, it really gave me an appreciation for your skill and for the mechanical sympathy that's needed to drive one of these cars frequently. Thank you for sharing just a sliver of this experience. I look forward to more!

Appreciate the driving impressions. It's these details that really give a sense of the car, and IMO are sometimes missed by reviews that focus too much on history, often history that is already well-known by anyone watching the video anyway.

That sound... oh my God! Perfect start to the new series Hyphen. I'd love to see more like this. Amazing stuff. Loved the driving impressions too. We mere mortals may never drive one, so its very interesting to hear how it actually drives. Constructive criticism: a few points the music is too loud and covers your voice. Add a little enthusiasm to your narration. But I'm sure you'll get into the groove of it more after doing a few episodes. 10/10!

Easily one of the best videos I have seen of the Miura. Excellent audio, The narrator’s voice was calming, and the music was very soothing. Great driver, too! Thank you for this video, I will be sharing it with friends.

The last part where you fired it up and went through the gears got me goosebumps. Thank you!
