Hi Sameer, great video. Quick question, the Bain India salaries for Project Leaders and EM's seem to be off (timestamp @ 8:13). I would assume that the employees at the EM level would be earning more than what the folks who've just joined the firm post their MBA's. Maybe this warrants a re-look at this particular figure? Thanks for your help in the community! Really appreciate everything you do.

Great question! Since this data isn't easily available, we sourced the data from a consulting website, which in turn may have sourced it from sites like Payscale. With such informal data sources there's the caveat that some salary stats may not be as accurate as we'd like them to be. Other than dumping the salary stats, the sourced site hasn't drilled deep into the nuances or explained the anomalies. One reason we could think of was that the India data may have mid/back office role salaries mixed up with consultant salaries. Rather than massaging the data at our end, we included it all in its original form. Is there any other (more accurate) source that you've come across?

Thanks for highlighting this, Neha. You're right. Associate level salaries at MBB have gone through the roof recently. In the US, MBA grads are being offered close to $200K. We used a third party site as the source for the salary data and realised that there would be some figures that are off the mark. But we hope this video still offers an indicative benchmark for those comparing it with salaries in other industries, and not just within MBB. Do you work in consulting?

MAANG sounds logical, since they're among the few out there with the brand and deep pockets that match ex-MBB's priorities. Getting into startups to escape bureaucracy sounds interesting, as they've polished their skills in big, bureaucratic organisations. They generally don't have the skills to thrive in chaotic environments. To take an analogy, they've spent this formative years telling captains of large, stable ships on how and where to navigate. Based on that experience, if they decide to jump into a raft in the stormy turbulent seas, we can only imagine the adventures that follow. Does that sound right?

As with business school admissions, the MBB recruitment process considers a wide variety of data points - including academic performance. But it's not evaluated in isolation. A few queries to understand your situation better. - What's your qualification and how good/bad are the grades? - What field do you currently work in and for how long? - Do you have an MBA, or are you planning to get one?

A brand new car's value drops the minute it is taken out of the showroom. MBA recruitment can follow a similar path. More often than not, you'll get access to the best jobs when you're hustling from the business school campus. When you leave your alma mater and head back home, perceptions and ground realities change rather quickly. You're now competing with the local talent from the elite bschools like IIM, ISB that have a better brand recognition and alumni networks in the country compared to many international brands. With the exception of a few marquee university/bschool brands, most aren't as globally appealing as we'd expect them to be. The silver lining is that the value graph can soar if you are able to gain good post-MBA experience. Unlike the car analogy, where the value continues to plummet with additional mileage, the combo of a good MBA + good work experience will get your value back to where it belongs. Elite consulting firms (like MBB) do most of their grad level recruiting from their feeder programs. If that's what you're aiming for, your odds of getting hired are the highest when you follow their regular campus hiring cycle.

@@MBACrystalBall the video covers the lifestyle and travel part well. That's a big part of consulting and something aspirants must know. For some, it is a perk but for some others, it can be a bane. The other part to know is that the competition to get into MBB is extreme. They are super selective and don't make too many exceptions to their 'lofty' standards. So while you aim for them, it's usually a good idea to have a backup plan in place.

  • @MBACrystalBall

Yes, it's possible. But it'll also depend on a few things, including: 1. Your performance record in the firm 2. The manpower requirements in the target office 3. Yes, MBB firms recruit military veterans. For instance, McKinsey has the Veterans@McKinsey initiative designed to support and onboard vets. But in most cases, the bulk of the recruitment happens on campus (check out the feeder programs in our other video on how to get into consulting). The rationale being - a degree such as an MBA can help them build a solid foundation of the business principles and make the transition from the army/navy/air-force to the corporate world. Without a relevant business degree, it would be significantly more difficult to get a foot in the door for an interview. Are you planning for an MBA or is that completely off the table?

For MBB hiring, certifications don't act as alternatives to full-time degrees. They can enhance a profile, but are typically not considered as game-changers, since it's relatively easier to get them compared to highly-selective and rigorous degrees. MBA is not compulsory to get into top management - provided you have other traits, experience and track record that can be considered as exceptional for that industry.
