After we created this video, tech and IT firms started laying off employees en masse. So along with voluntary exits that we cover in the video, there are now lakhs of fired techies who'd be looking to re-skill and prepare themselves for competitive, high-paying jobs when the economy bounces back. And we're not even considering the jobs that'll be lost due to AI tools such as ChatGPT and Bard. How do you see the scenario for tech professionals unfolding in the coming years? What can they do to stay relevant and in demand?

You're spot on about the entry level salaries. In fact, as you've pointed out, many won't be that lucky and have to settle on lower starting compensation. But CEO salaries aren't that high for the majority. A few star performers may get it, but many won't. All in all, salaries are definitely a reason for the quitting phenomenon, but there are other reasons too. Btw, are you into IT/Tech? That's the general perception everyone has based on how it's been portrayed in the media of late in the aftermath of the big bang layoffs. And the narrative suits the companies doing the layoffs too. But it's over-simplistic and not entirely accurate. If you track the data during the pandemic, many companies had already started laying off employees foreseeing a slowdown. For instance, in 2020, Uber fired 25% of its workforce. Lyft laid off 17%. Startups also had started laying off. Like healthcare startup Cure.fit fired 10% of its employees. WeWork fired 20%. Zomato, AirBnb, Swiggy, TripAdvisor also joined the club. And all these are just in India. Globally, the number is higher. The trend that started during the pandemic just got worse after it ended.

I recently resigned from my IT job to pursue MBA. The senior management who hardly has any touch with project level employees is behaving in a passive aggressive way, givin me unnecessary justifications how the company culture is transparent and they have helped many people with insurance during covid and not layed off anyone during that time... that I should have told them my higher education plan 4-5 months ago and not directly resigned just after getting admission offer. Is this attitude common in Indian IT companies management level? They even try to make us feel guilty for resigning for better career prospects, even MBA in the case of studies.

Thanks for the clarififcations. The choice would come down to what you prefer between a consulting career vs broader set of opportunities. For the former, there's no doubt INSEAD would be a fantastic choice, considering the sheer number of students who get into top tier consulting firms. However, here's another aspect to think about. A majority of MBA students start off by aiming for consulting. But along the way, they realise that their MBA can give them access to a much broader (and possibly more interesting) set of career options. If you'd want to leave that option open, Ross is a better bet. Other than being in the US, it's also a longer program that fits well with your current level of experience. It gives you more time (a whole extra year) to experiment and get your hands dirty before making a commitment to one career. Do those perspectives help?

Thanks for the kind words, Adithya. You raise a good point about the risks. There are several ways to mitigate them, depending on how you prioritise them. 1. If the RoI is a concern, the bschool selection process could include more programs where you're likely to get scholarships. 2. If OPT duration is a concern, you can apply to STEM MBA programs which offer more breathing space. 3. If the duration seems too long, there are one-year MBA options that deliver a similar bang for the buck making the cost/benfit ratio look more attractive. 4. If US itself seems risky, there are other countries to explore. Does that give you a little more elbow room and confidence? Which industry do you work in currently? And how many years of experience?

Reason being I liked client facing roles, being around people. That is what missed big time from my previous job role and then the realization happened. In 2023, I tried my level best to get into Business Analyst field but couldn't In the month of february, I got into IT sales as Business Development Executive. The role is still related to tech. I am liking the role of finding the solutions part but not so much on achieving the target part. Little bit stressful but keeps me on feet. Liking it pretty much. So my total experience comes down to 1 year. I know it is not a lot but I wanted to start my preparation. Please tell me if it's feasible for me to pursue MBA abroad or just clear CAT and do an MBA here. Or Wait, gain another 2 years in this field, build my profile and try my shot abroad. I am an average student from school till college when comes to academics or extra curricular activities. Nothing great to mention here. Since you've mentioned 'frightened' a couple of times, let's start with that. You don't have to be scare of anything. You have plenty of time to finish studying and then working in an area you like. That's when the real fun starts. Gain experience, and build skills. That's what will save you, more than the degree. We have a video on profile building. Check it out for tips on what you can work on. AI will continue to be an enabler on all fields, including business. So we'll have to learn to use it well, instead of being scared of it. We follow an online consulting model, and work with applicants from around the world. But you don't need our help at this stage. Where do BBA graduates from your college work?

@@MBACrystalBall thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into those. From my college , the graduates mainly work for BAT bd , Unilever bd , marico bd and also in our local corporations such as ACI limited , Akij group etc.

Other than the theoretical knowledge you'll get in the degree, try to build your leadership skills by participating in clubs and events in college. Do you have any that interest you?

@@MBACrystalBall I have an interest in leadership. Unfortunately, I am not good at it. What I mean is that I can't take responsibility for others . I do my own stuff. And whenever I have to do group projects I really become anxious as I can't do the things the way I want and it frustrates me. Although I want to change . Can you give me some tricks and tips to strengthen my leadership skills ?
