I have a herniated disc in my neck. I thought I was going to need a third discectomy but the McKenzie exercises so far have taken my pain away. This exercise took the last bit a pain away I was having after starting some other exercises yesterday.

Thank you! This is exactly what I wanted. My neck and shoulders get tight and knotted from driving and sitting at the computer. It can cause headaches, as well. So, I bought a book that recommends these exercises, called "Treat Your Own Neck," by Robin McKenzie. It's a great book, but this video really helped me understand how to do the exercises properly. Much appreciated!

Thank you for your comments. The McKenzie method is very powerful and useful. And I agree, it helps to have a demonstration of what the book is speaking about. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns as you treat your neck and shoulders.

Thank you for your kind words. This is an amazing exercise. As I say in the video, I've seen this exercise help so many people, even those who didn't realize that the pain in their arm was coming from their neck.

Indeed. I did McKenzie last year but my pain is back and this is a very good refresher. Just a question: do you apply overpressure? If so at what stage? Thank you.@@physicaltherapyhandclinico9074

@@jean-yvessohet1402 whether to add overpressure depends upon your symptom response. So if you are improving with just doing cervical retraction and extension, then there is no need to add overpressure (which is the rotation with this exercise). However, if you either plateau or have no response with doing the cervical retraction and extension, then it is good to add overpressure (rotation). It is all based on symptoms. Quite often, a person needs to do quite a few reps before knowing if overpressure is needed. So I may have a patient do 3-5 sets of 10 of just the cervical retraction and extension. If they have a limited response, then I would add the over pressure. I hope this helps.

Hi there.. I watched your exercise and am wondering if you can help. I have a disc degeneration in my c6-c7 of my neck. Been 4 weeks and still have horrible pain in my arm. I’m going to the chiro for 2 weeks he does spinal decompression but no relief yet. Does doing this simple exercise fix disc degeneration causing a pinched nerve?

Hello! A follow-up report: This exercise is the only one that has worked for my neck pain (had to add the head rotation and the end of the neck extension before the magic happened!) I can honestly say that my pain scale has gone from a 10 to about a 3 and getting better every day!!! My question is: Can I do this as a maintenance routine, maybe once or twice weekly?? Sets? Reps? THANK YOU!!! Caroline (subscriber)

Do you have anything specifically for one sided headaches focused around the eye/nose/side of forehead? I get this all on my right side sometimes (and lately) waking me up 1 or 2 hours into sleep. Before this episode started I had vertigo for about 4 days. It's happened to me in the past about 2.5 years ago as well. My latest doctor who looked at my MRI from back then thinks it's due to mucus/pus build up in my sinus..even though I am not really stuffed up very much. Thanks.

When I do the extension, as I go back further with my neck, it gets tight and hurts on my left upper shoulder in the muscles. But if I put a rolled towel under my neck it is easier, with less hurting, to move my neck back. is that normal?

Not really. But it often abolishes symptoms even though the disc bulge remains. There is some evidence that extension in the lumber spine helps reduce some disc bulges. But no evidence of this in the neck.
