I like you John, but you're not fair here. You weren't particularly a symbol of morality in your time. So why the need to virtue signal? She might be irritating, but Court is an old granny who isn't gonna be taught things at her age, just let it go. Anyway, 10-20 years ago the majority was not pro gay marriage. I am sure that still a significant minority of people oppose it, one of them happens to be Court; you can't throw these people to garbage either. Plus it is insulting to go to Australia and propose changing a stadium with someone else's name, considering it's not your country. How would you like if Hewitt (or Kyrgios) went to the US Open and protested that Arthur Ahse stadium be changed to Pete Sampras because, for ex, he won more slams?

Probably get an un-aussie Melbourne security guard toss you out like they did in the AFL last year for fans having a go. But seriously I hope TA do us a favour and not renew Mcenroe's contract next year. He is just creating division in a tournament that wants to respect Court whilst not endorsing her views, and that division creates more harm than good. Imagine if TA listened to him and renamed the court for woke purposes? How many quiet Australians would boycott the open? Cases in point - Gillette, Israel Folau

How on earth does Serena winning 2 more make her better than Margaret Court. Court won 64 grand slams including doubles and mixed doubles. Serena has 39 by the same measure. Yes the doubles and mixed is less competitive than the singles, but Court was playing in and winning all 3 forms at the same tournament. She would literally be winning a singles title on same day as doubles and mixed or a day later, yet her singles final opponents were just playing singles, knocked out of doubles in early rounds. The level above her peers that Court had during her era was head and shoulders above what Williams has achieved, and Williams picking up 2 more doesn't change that.

@@CC-uy3wn that’s a fable created by bitter serena and her team. Serena’s era is actually a lot easier than Margaret’s. You have more opportunities to win, get to bring coaches and psychologists with you wherever you travel, unlimited funds, more relaxing rules. Also Serena hid in her home when officials tried to test her for performance enhancing drugs. She is twice is physical size of any female tennis player and played 7 years more than Margaret and still couldn’t even match Margaret’s record. Margaret Court is the greatest female tennis player of all time. This is backed up by FACTS.

  • @milvao3400

@@CC-uy3wn It doesn't matter. Margaret won the Grand Slam in the open era (1970) and she won the triple crown at the US Open that year. (singles, doubles, mixed). Has Serena ever done that? You can't really compare tennis back then to what it is now. I wouldn't say it was easier. For sure now it's a more competitive sport, more physical, but back then players travelled alone, didn't win much money... they also had their difficulties. Back in the day, as Billie J.King said many times, doubles was the most important thing, especially mixed doubles. Now winning in singles is what matters the most. Serena could have easily passed Margaret, she reached 4 GS finals after giving birth to her daughter, but she was unlucky and lost them all. Margaret is still at the top of that list, and Nadal, Djokovic and Federer are at the top of the men's list. Wheter americans, McEnroe, Navratilova like it or not.

It's a nonsense to say that you can't seperate the person from his or her achievements. Court is not celebrated for her views on gays. She's celebrated for her achevements on the tennis court. I agree with Mac in that I too find her views offensive. But Mac and Navratilova through their actions now put the spotlight on those views and give them more attention than they deserve. I'm probably on the left of even those two on most issues. But one thing that the left still has to learn is that political correctness doesn't work. It is in fact counter productive. You don't change people's minds by telling them to shut up. Margaret Court is not a criminal. She hasn't killed anyone. She's just a person who I strongly disagree with who also happens to be a great tennis player. And it's that part of her that deserves to be celebrated.

By implication, I take it that Mr. McEnroe sees Serena as some sort of role model. For examples of Serena in action take a look at videos of the 2009 and 2018 US Finals. The only worse behaviour I have witnessed is from JM himself and there were many instances when he should have received a ban for his conduct. Serena is a great tennis player but in addition to her petulance she is adept at using gamesmanship to beat opponents, for instance that intimidating, unladylike roaring. Margaret Court was a true sporting hero in every respect and is now lambasted for expressing, not her views, but those of God. Anything God says is for the good of humankind, including those with a same sex attraction. Well done Margaret Court for expressing the courage of your convictions.

But this isn’t your Australian Open just as the US doesn’t own they US Open, the British don’t own Wimbledon and the French don’t own that event. It’s merely held at a facility in your country. That facility should be held to certain standards and who that facility honors is part of those standards. Holding a Grand Slam event is a privilege that comes with responsibilities. Sorry John, you were a tremendous tennis player with so much natural ability on the court, but am totally behind Margaret Court. First of all, who are you and Martina to walk on the Center Court on Margaret Court Arena with your banner? You aren’t even Australian. I would be appalled if Lleyton Hewitt did the same thing here at Ashe Stadium, him being an Aussie. “ Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake: for their’s is the kingdom of God.” Matthew 5:10. Stand strong Margaret Court. It’s a short life down here, and we know what the word of God says, concerning homosexuality. God’s word never changes. We as humans and cultures change and evolve. We are seeing it right before our eyes, but praise God the word of God as It is also says “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Hebrews 13:8.

He should be talking about tennis. I don't agree with Margaret Court about her views on LGBT, but I suspect that Serena holds the same views since she's a Jeovah's Witness... but I'm interested in tennis players for what they do or have done on the court. Americans want Serena to be considered the best even if she doesn't get to 25, and they try to do it this way. It must be difficult for them to accept that the best female player ever is Australian and the best three (active) male players ever are European.

John is right in his views and I support him. You can’t equate what Court has said to the things that happen during a match while under pressure, exhaustion, and frustration. No one is being pardoned here, the remarks typically made on court are also scrutinized, we also acknowledge their faults. But there is never an excuse to make those remarks off the court, such as Court has. Her controversial views have gone against the grain and offended/hurt a lot of people. It’s time a true legend of the game, Serena, overtakes Court and spreads her message. Serena Williams inspires people, Margaret Court ridicules them.

Whom has she inspired? And inspired to do what? Act like a petulant baby and bring out the sex card when something goes against her? Margaret has always acted with dignity and class, and has done so much charity work. Just because she has different views to yours, you want to see her name taken off the court? Bigot.

Margarete court is irrelevant today. She won at a time when the women's game was barely developed, there little to no competition.Tennis players were not like the athletes we see today neither was there much diversity.Kids today will not recognise her,she is more or less a monument to the dark times such as racial oppression and slavery and those who support her need to stop hiding among the progressive. If you hate people for their sexual orientation and race come out and of the shadows and see if that stacks up ,but you continue to slither and masquerade as the guardians of the Christian message while carrying pitch forks .
