Margaret Court's 'tribute' was 'hijacked' by McEnroe and Navratilova

Sky News Contributor Catherine McGregor says what should have been a “respectful tribute” towards Margaret Court, was instead “hijacked” by “brat” John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova.
Former American tennis stars John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova had apologised after they conducted an on-court protest against Margaret Court during this year’s Australian Open.
The two former tennis champions condemned Margaret Court for her opinions on same sex marriage.
“Margaret Court is not only Australia's greatest female tennis player, she is the greatest female player of all time,” Ms McGregor said.
“Whatever you think of her theology or politics she deserved more respect than she was accorded by her detractors”.

McEnroe who once in one of his many tantrums offered to fight the umpire after the game, only to be told afterwards that the umpire is a 3rd degree black belt in karate!! A sore loser and very childish individual, Court was a far better sportsperson any day!!!

US tennis is riddled with wokes, from Navratilova to Serena to James blake and especially the high priestess of wokeness - Billy Jean King. They want to erase anyone who disagrees with their lgbt and blm agenda.. Margaret court was and is Australia's greatest ever sports person. Her views are irrelevant to what she achieved. Her success deserves that a stadium at her home slam be named after her. What a cheek that two foreigners have come to Australia and try and tell the aussies what they should do in their own country to suit their agenda.. Really sad as well that two old gits are trying to recapture some of their former glories. I'm glad they were sensored. No one cares about what two old people who were relevant 30 years ago, say now anyway.. Their little protest was embarrassing for them. Maybe some narcissistic jealousy there from Martina because Margaret Court had a more successful career than her??? I think so...

The three best players of all time and the younger stars are all European, and Serena probably won't pass Margaret... so I think they're just trying to draw attention on tennis talking about things that have nothing to do with it. I'm Italian and even if I don't agree with Margaret, it is obvious to me that the tennis federation celebrates the tennis legend, not their religious or homophobic views, so the name of the arena should stay there where it is. I'm also wondering why Navratilova or McEnroe are not worried about Serena or Venus views about LGBTQI+ matters... they're still Jehovah's witnesses, aren't they?

Court is not GOAT.. 11 Australian Open titles in an era where few top-ranked players participated at the Open. It's not Court's fault, it's just the truth. One can also argue Chris Evert didn't play the Australian Open from 1974-1981 when she dominated the game. And due to her contract obligations to WTT, she couldn't play the French Open from 1977-1979 when she was by far the most dominant clay court player and during her 125 clay-court match-winning streak. That's 11 Slams. She could've easily had won half (all 3 French, and 3 out of 8 Australians and that's being extremely conservative since Evert made it to every single AO final she played) and raise her Slam titles to...24. Imagine if both Evert and Court each had 24 titles. Who would be considered the GOAT? Tiebreaker would be determined by Evert's character and respect from other tennis pros vs Court's. So now there would be no question who's GOAT. You can also argue the years Navratilova didn't play AO. She was not as dominant in the mid-'70s but the grass courts would have helped her win a couple. What Court said about Navratilova was beyond disrespectful and hateful. And so 1st Testament and 19th century. If Court wants respect, then don't trash other tennis legends. What she said about lesbian tennis players "indoctrinating" younger players and today the women's tour is "full of lesbians" are words only an extreme far-right paranoid hateful bigot would say. Court's views on LGBTQ are extremely homophobic. Her rhetoric is dangerous, wrong, irresponsible, immature, vitriolic, consequential. It's like in America, our 1st amendment includes abridging the freedom of speech. You can't get arrested, but if it's damaging to an image, or disrespectful towards anything you happen to represent, or are the face of or contracted to, then you are not protected. This includes a job, a contract, etc. When Martina came out in the early 80's she lost the chance of multi-million dollar endorsement income because many companies were afraid to be identified or represented by a gay person. I do know if Court was American, her extreme and bigoted views would not be tolerated and the USTA would not put her name on any of the US Open courts. Nor would any major company would want her to be their spokesperson. Since Court has such a big platform and voice, there should be consequences for her disrespectful, extremist and bigoted speech. . One can have flawed views and still be celebrated and respected for their contributions and achievements to their sport. But when you are ranking the greatest, best ever, GOAT, or name the stadium after someone who embodies your country's rich tennis history and celebrates Australian tennis, the last thing you want is having to explain, like an asterisk next to the name.. *yes her extreme and bigoted homophobic views are hers alone and in contrast to Australia's strong principles of inclusion, equality, respectful of all Australians.."

I wish people would desist from trying to deride Margaret's GOAT status because of some misguided view of the value of an Australian Open title. Her rival Billie Jean King actually won that title in 1968 despite her repeated assertion that she considered it 'a minor league tournament'. So which is it? The fact is it was mostly US players who couldn't be bothered to go to Australia to play it. So if the GS records of King, Evert, McEnroe etc are less because of it that's on them. Tough! Similarly, Evert would have won more French Opens if she hadn't played World Team Tennis from 1975-8 but that was her choice. Margaret is the female GOAT. End of. .

Her homophobic views and vitriol against all that do not believe in what she espouses are not in synchronicity with the worlds views nowadays. Name the court after Evonne Goolagong, and give Margaret a place of honor by having a statue of her placed inside one of the buildings at Oz, but do not HONOUR HER for being a bigot and espousing hatred and prejudiced views freely and without an iota of remorse (or expected retribution) of any kind.
