I remember watching Titanic, and the framing was off, and during the car sex scene, you could clearly see Kate Winslet wearing a towel. I think you still can in the full-screen VHS version of the film.

This could actually be for real. In the DVD version of Pee Wee Herman's Big Adventure you can see things that were meant to be cropped out (such as someone's hands feeding out bike chain).

Yep, it's 100% a real thing. If the projectionist does not crop the frame correctly, you will see the boom etc. Travis is not crazy!

Jack Grimes it's also just how it's made. you think every shot was perfectly aligned in the raw? no, that shit was dragged up and to the left. they leave room to crop things out.

it's true, it's a time saving measure to get films to theatres faster, as they can just get rid of that stuff formatting it for home video (save for Pee Wee's Big Adventure, which somehow makes it better and more surreal)

Jack Grimes TRIVIA TIME That’s probably because it was directed by Tim Burton. When he directed Batman, he made it to be literally much darker than the final outcome, and the studio made the editors turn the brightness up because it was difficult to see. As a result, a lot of mistakes can be seen that couldn’t be seen in the original cut (a hand on the bat mobile steering wheel when it’s in self drive mode). Maybe that happened with Pee Wee Herman - same director, same style

It's definitely true that things wind up on the film that isn't supposed to be seen. Because the film itself isn't in a widescreen aspect ratio you can't project it on a screen of that aspect ratio (unless you use a special lens but not everyone does that) so the filmmaker will frame everything with the cropped frame in mind. The question is if the film prints received by the cinema include that extra part of the image that isn't supposed to be seen. I don't know if it would be possible to accidentally project the entire frame onto the screen, but conceivably to could accidentally set up an open matte film with an anamorphic lens, but the image would be all distorted

The only time I've ever sat in one of the front rows is during the last LOTR movie when I was like 10 with my friends, while their parents sat in the back. As a kid, it was AWESOME being the only ones in the front row, RIGHT THERE to feel the action. It is one of my best childhood memories.

I like sitting in the front row. It doesn't hurt my neck, and I find it very easy to immerse myself into the movie, especially with horror. I sat in the front when I saw the new "It". When anything happened near the edges of the screen, I would turn my head to see it, as if it were actually there. That's just my personal preference, though.

This is actually a VERY interesting topic on how video gets to theaters. There are many posts online(I can't verify them as I do not work in the industry nor would one be able to obtain and play the theater copies of film) claiming that what Travis thought was absolutely correct. They claim that the film is not cropped to the aspect ratio and indeed they have to position the film correctly in the theaters to crop it. Many cite pee wees big adventure dvd version of allowing people to expand their movie for the widescreen and there were some things you could see in it that the original vhs crop didn't have. SO interesting if this is the case

  • @VideoGamesIncorporated

The Night at the Museum thing is wrong for two very big reasons. 1) The movie is in 1.85:1 (similar to a television screen) so if there were black bars (based on what he is saying, I don't think there would be any black bars, but I'm not going to get that technical), they would be on the side of the screen, not on top and bottom. He would have most likely not seen boom mics, but cameras and a lot of wires, possibly some crew members. 2) The "black bars" in movies are hardcoded in, and there's nothing under them anyway. There is no way to remove them without going back to the source footage and changing the aspect ratio. This could be why some people in the comments are talking about seeing boom mics in DVD and VHS copies of movies though. In those cases, to fit the screen better, sometimes studios will go back and resize the footage.
