    This is such an informative video! Loved the diversity this video has. Thanks for creating this. I have a question to ask: I have almost 4 years of experience in an NGO. I am in a leadership role where I supervise fundraising, social media and donor retention (very much similar to marketing role in a Corporate). However, people assume that with an NGO experience I may not be suitable for roles in Corporates. And here comes my dilemna, if this is true then would doing an MBA (IIM or from the top 5 of the world) be wise? Will my role still be cliched like this?

  • @MBACrystalBall

    @MBACrystalBall

    Many go for an MBA to change their industry, role or geography - or all 3. The key to managing the transition is to have a clear roadmap on how you plan to achieve this. Don't rely on Adcoms to connect the dots. Aiming for a 'corporate' role isn't sufficient. You'll have to work on getting the storyline more specific and streamlined first. If you aren't convinced about it, then it would be difficult to convince bschools too.

    While it isn't specifically known as a tech feeder, almost all the good programs end up placing a large number of MBA students in tech companies. If you have specific target companies on your mind, make sure you see them recruiting over the last 2-3 years. Non-tech professionals get hired by tech companies in several domains - including finance, marketing, strategy, operations, recruitment and others. If you're interested in tech, then you'll need to take the initiative to learn those tech skills independently and get some exposure before you apply to MBA programs.

Second, get work experience in Nepal for 3/4 years and then target elite B schools. After that I applied to various job opportunities and even got selected in a few of them but then got declined due to percentage being less than the eligibility criteria. My main interest is to work for a consulting firm, like KPMG. But the problem is that I've been sitting unemployed at home and all the referrals I built at consulting firm don't respond to me anymore. My dream is to get a good consulting job - get approx 2 years experience and then get selected in a good MBA college. But how do I get started if I want to get placed in consulting firm?? Is there any other way to enter apart from making referrals??

    Referrals are the best way to get introduced to any company. But if that hasn't worked out, you can always apply through their websites, or through job application portals. Many MBA grads move into business development roles within the tech sector. But recruiters would want to see the tangible and transferrable skills you have, that takes the discussion beyond just interest and potential. Do you have anything to share there? If not, go back in time to dig out what you may have done in your earlier roles that would be helpful in showing evidence of your marketing prowess.

    Sure, you can mix and match electives, no issue there. But don't rely purely on what you'll be learning in the class.
