Thank you for making this tutorial! I performed this installation this evening using this video and the process was flawless. Taking my time it took me less than two hours. The most difficult part for me was running the cables through the dash because of how tight it is in that area. Putting it all back together was much faster than taking it apart. I'm very happy I did this upgrade. For those that are researching the same thing for their Mazda, I did the firmware update the night before. I had to update to two different versions. The first update was the failsafe and reinstallation files for 70.100. After that was completed I updated to 70.367, which only requires the reinstallation file. I installed both firmware updates in a little over an hour total.

Thanks so much for your video, used it today together with the one from 888-werkes and had no problem adding android auto to a 2016 Mx-5. Definitely prefer your approach to the cabling. Used your video for 90% of the work, but having the second video for comparison was useful in a couple places. Only thing I could suggest for anyone looking at these comments, when it comes time to pull the cabling down to the new usb connection box, it makes things a lot easier if you use a stiff piece of wire to find the route and then pull the tape wrapped usb cables with the wire.

Thank you so much! I completed this project on a 2019 mx5. It does take about 3 hours. My wife will never drive a manual. So, due to the auto it did add more time and complexity. If you have an auto, the forms do not recommend removing the shift knob. Put it in “N” and remove the negative battery cable and get ready to move the console a lot.

Thank you! Watched your vid a few times...eBay package got delivered...about 2.5 hours later I have apple carplay! Just a tip... the heat gun is your friend. Especially in a cool garage. After a few passes with the heat gun on the piece you are working, it pops right off. Same for re-assembly. The heat gun made it much easier and you didn't have to worry about cracking. The only PITA was fishing the wires from the head unit to the USB hub. I'd add a few inches on the piece going to the hub. Gives you some play you may need. So the pig tail lines going from the top to the USB hub...give yourself a few more inches than what is documented.

I've read, that for Android Auto to work, you only need to update the software and that no hardware needs replacing and that the hardware needs to be replaced in order for Apple CarPlay to work. Can anyone confirm this? I have a 2019 MX-5 RF ordered for March/April and if it won't have AA already installed, I'm not going to let my new car to be dismantled like that.

If you are on firmware lower than v59. 502 you can just connect a sdcard with hacks including android auto. The hacks can also tweak the system enabling things like touch screen whilst driving. In firmware v59. 502 they blocked the port. You can still do the hack by connecting to the back of the CMU but you need to pull out the CMU to make the connection. None of this needs a new hub.

You know? Just to slightly adjust what the radio does in my car, this is NOT worth the hassle. I’ve swapped shifters for Hurst Pistol Grips that have less gutting than this nonsense. The radio already plays my iPhone’s applications, and I don’t really care if it doesn’t “read” my texts through my car. I’ve seen the videos on CarPlay, and there’s really not that much of an “upgrade” from the factory that you can already do. Waze or Apple’s maps on your screen, also isn’t that necessary. I’ll just trade my car for a 2019 or later MX-5. That’s my opinion, you did a thorough headache of a job for those with this much time to increase their radio’s ability by 10%.

Too much work just to replace the IMPORTANT hub. Knowing myself, I hate scratches, bents and dings, not to mention outright breaks and rattles. Why did Mazda design it that way? Thinking the guys at the dealership would be so careless about this job, I'd rather just live without AA and live with the built-in map. Or, trade in my 2019 to a newer one? Oh well.
